Got to love a piece of history like this, it's kind of funny that German "hyper inflation" means a 500 deutchmark coin - Zimbabwe were the best historically with their trillion dollar notes.

Germany had inflationary notes of much higher denomination as well. There were also provincial and non-official issues coins and other tokens, but none from the central government.

Note that minting coins is much more expensive than printing notes. The coins offered here were usable as payment only for a very short time (maybe a few months) before even their material value exceeded the purchasing power of their denomination. Cheesy

Bidders welcome.

This is my first auction. It's a pilot auction to check if there is interest in real coins besides Bitcoin. Smiley Coins offered here are from my own private collection.

In this auction you can bid for:

200 Mark ("A" = Berlin) + 500 Mark ("F" = Stuttgart) Germany (Weimar Republic) 1923

Historical Background
The end of WWI led to the collapse of the German Empire (1871-1918). A new democratic government was installed by the National Assembly in the city of Weimar. This period (1918-1933) is hence historically referred to as the "Weimar Republic". After the war, defeated Germany had to provide high reparation payments to the victorious powers. This burden was one of the causes that ultimately led to the hyperinflation of the year 1923, where the national currency (the German Mark) lost more than 99,99% of its pre-war purchasing power.

The genuine historical coins offered here are from this period of hyperinflation. The 500 Mark value is the highest denomination coin ever minted by any national government of Germany.

Although the German hyperinflation could be stopped by a currency reform at the end of the year 1923, the economic and political situation in the Weimar Republic remained unstable and gave ultimately rise to the power grab of Adolf Hitler in the year 1933, who pushed Germany into the next war (WWII, 1939-1945).
