This sign is a festinating case study that relates to the coins and other collectibles we buy and trade here. Bitcoin because of its digital nature is a movement without many physical artifacts. People will want physical representations of it. The way they are valued and priced in the market is very interesting.

Coming from a guy who thinks his pictures add .002 to the items value lol

Eclipse takes the best pictures in the physical Bitcoin space. Hands down.

The prices are set by the seller. Buyers are free to walk away.
my point is why say something is not worth what it actually sold for that amount? yet at the same time, increase the sale price of what you sell simply because you take a "better" picture?

With my primitive understanding of this collectable notepad (less than an hour of research), I made the split second conclusion that someone wrote "BTCitcoin" on a notepad and held it up behind bozo treasury secretary Yellen at a hearing. Is this an important moment in bitcoin history, absolutely. Does this warrant a price at auction of 16BTC, I would argue no. There could be much more to the story that I am missing but I fiind the valuation to be too high to stomach for a crude drawing on a notepad.

Buyer may be hoping to sell this later for more bitcoin? Who would pay even more in bitcoin terms for this then this sale price to make a "profit". Maybe the buyer is purchasing this to preserve it or add it to a personal collection. I don't know.

true and I agree 16btc is up there but for it to get to that there had to be more than one willing to pay up to that point.

btw my comments were not really a stab at you directly - I just made reference to you because you were in the convo

it applies to everyone or anyone who sells things far above the face value of the bitcoin and the intrinsic value of the coin. anything over that and the person would be net more profits to simply buy Bitcoin and hodl it. Very rarely does anyone get more Bitcoin for an item than they paid - they might get more USD value but that just shows that USD loses value.

I will agree often his pics looks great - but sometimes they are blurry or the colors are distorted and I think he said that was intentional on those occurrences. But it can be misleading at times as well.

you hit on the head when you said prices are set by the seller - and buyers either agree or disagree with their wallets.

what one would not be wiling to pay, many others are.

WOW!

Indeed. I think as far as regrets go, in the future this will probably be the biggest of the buyer’s life. A million dollars on a pad of paper someone scribbled a note on. I honestly don’t care if it’s a signed civil war document. No piece of paper should carry such a value in my opinion. Still, congrats to all involved. That’s no small amount of money.

Worth 0.001BTC by my appraisal.

Could have just held onto the 16BTC and been fine for generations, instead you got a piece of paper with a scribble that got held up behind bozo circus clown yellen.

I fully agree regarding the 16BTC. That is generational wealth.

But people are free to do whatever they want with their money. Bitcoin is freedom money at the end of the day.

The dude that spent the 16BTC probably has 1600BTC

Drop in the bucket for some, but for most that is life changing money.

16BTC could set at least three generations up for total financial freedom. Depending upon the outcome of this whole experiment.

looking for a knockoff replica of this. google searches aren't helping. any idea where i could find?

A replica should be pretty easy for you to make. Go buy the same pad of paper and a pen, print out the sign and then go to work doing some tracing. As far as counterfeiting collectors items goes, this has to be one of the easier items to replicate if someone did want such a thing. Say how much you want to pay and I’m sure someone would be willing to make you one.

I could recreate it, maybe even replicate it precisely as the original, but I need to determine the correct ink and paper.

The creator of the original evidently made 9 signed replicas and sold some on Scare City earlier.

There's 21 replicas.  They can be found on display in the offices of Chaincode Labs, Castle Island Ventures, Morgan Creek, Pubkey NYC, Coin Center, Blockchain Capital, and Paradigm, and in the private homes of other high-profile Bitcoiners.

Oh, that's interesting! It's cool that you're the host of this event. Wishing you the best of luck with the final hour of the auction!

Thank you!  It's an honor and an adrenaline rush! 🥵

A pretty cool item and a unique piece of Bitcoin history. Must be exciting even to be the auction house chosen to auction it. With 5 days still to go and a price over half a Bitcoin already, it looks to be a successful endeavor already. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Yes Congrats!, but...
"A run of 21 replica editions was created in 2019. They have all sold out for an average realized price of 0.8 BTC. The works have been widely collected among the Bitcoin community..."

How is it known for certain this is the original? Thank you.

This image offers the best proof, with donations to the BTC address starting right after the timestamp. You can inspect the handwriting by comparing it to other auction images.

Those near Pubkey can inspect the sign IRL on the final auction day.

'Bitcoin Sign Guy'  will also issue a COA in buyer's preferred format.

Hopefully this helps!

Scarce City, Congrats on being selected to auction this item. It is absolutely iconic in the bitcoin history. I laugh every time I see clips of Yellen and the sign being held up.

Also want to say this, I love your site and the artistic freedom you promote. If I was an artistic creator, then your site would be a so helpful.

I love that I can see previous auctions and the results. I hope you never remove this.

And drop the shitcoins: NFTs and ordinals.

Bitcoin only. We're trying to fix the money. Everything else is a distraction.

while I agree with you and dont care for the XCP NFT's and/or ordinals, many would argue that both are run on Bitcoin. No differently than LN is.

this is going to be expensive - I hope to get a few bids in but I am sure I wont be the one to win it lol

someone jumped it from 1 million sats to 10 million sats in one bid - wonder if he meant to make that a max bid lol

Own the original ‘Buy Bitcoin’ sign held behind Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen during her 2017 Congressional testimony.

Hastily drawn on a yellow legal pad, this iconic drawing marked Bitcoin’s intrusion into the global monetary landscape. The sign is one of few widely-recognized physical Bitcoin artifacts, given Bitcoin’s virtual nature. Beloved by Bitcoin enthusiasts, the sign has spawned countless memes, derivative works, and imitation stunts

Auction Start: Today, April 18, 12 pm ET (16:00 UTC)
Auction End: Wednesday, April 24, 7 pm ET (23:00 UTC)

Pubkey Bar in NYC will host the auction ending at 6pm on Wednesday April 24th.
The sign will be on public display at Pubkey throughout the auction.
