Assume this is no longer valid and or legitimate but if it is and can be proven in person somehow. I would be open to doing 1 btc and a split of the recovered funds. Would definitely need to.

What city? Would you also be willing to meet with a company or someone who can let me know how impossible this task would be? If its 2 btc for something that absolutely can never be recovered, it's not that interesting.

KYC and everything would be fine? Paying and losing the wallet wouldn't be high on my priority list either.

The first time I see such a situation when the owner of the wallet has lost the password. Of course, this is very bad, but in this regard, the question arose, is it really possible to recover the password? Lead that many wrote that they are ready to try to do it, but what is the probability that it will be possible to do it? I know from myself that if I make a password, then this is a set of letters, numbers and a symbol that is in no way related to myself. So it turns out that it can take a very long time to recover the password and it is unlikely that it will be possible to do it. I even look at the owner of the wallet for half a year already out of touch, maybe already remembered the password or already tried to unlock it. Still, 8000 ETH is big money now.

I can crack this if I get the first and last characters of the private key.
Sounds interesting, is this Really possible to do if you knew these parts of a PVT KEY...

Coming back to the topic, what are the chances that someone would master their private keys, moreover OP used a password likely alphanumeric so an interview with him might help gather up some possible passwords

Its nice ammount, but even a 12character long password can take up to 2 CENTURIES (!) to crack, and 2 Bitcoins just too much.
There are lot of people selling wallet.json files, found randomly on internet /stolen from people, but its almost impossible to crack those wallets.

I've seen a lot of 100BTC+ wallets selling for 0.03 Bitcoins and similiar prices, cause even if you buy , you have more chance to win a lotto than cracking the wallet . T_T

Starting Bid: 2.0 BTC
Increments: 0.1 BTC

Auction will be valid until Wednesday December 21, 2016 7:00 pm New York Time (1:00 am in Stockholm)
Auction is finished if there is minimum difference of 30 minutes between last offers.

I m going to provide more information about potential password to the winner (min. Characters, language, symbols used,...)

This wallet is a fortune and it worth everyone's attention however the wallet appears to have been successfully cracked, the last transaction was 20 days ago https://etherscan.io/address/0x6966063aa5de1db5c671f3dd699d5abe213ee902#tokentxns.

8k eth are still on the balance during 1379 days 17 hrs ago, so there is no any success still. But there were movements with ERC tokens more than month ago.

Incoming movements doesn't proves anything. If there is any outgoing transactions then it might prove some. There are many projects who in order to get noticed make transactions or spam the network like this.

Very true! I'd hate to lose that much  Tongue
Agree completely, that this is very sad to lose what we have, just because we forget what we did.
it must be written in a book more easily later. whereas a year later the price of eth which he had to receive was extraordinary, it was unfortunate when he should have received it happily. but we don't know whether it can be found again because the time is long enough. hopefully a solution can be found, hopefully this makes learning for us.

This wallet is now valued at almost 1 million. It has already been worth a few million in the past. Incredible, and very disturbing. If even with the possibility of recovering 1 million it was not possible to find the password, it shows that it is always necessary to think a lot about how you will protect your investments.

You can convert it to an $ethereum$ hash so I can run it through my huge wordlists. Link is below:

This only gives me the hash, not the wallet. If you REALLY do have it, you can easily do this Smiley

That amount of eth is probably worth as much as it was back then anyways. Wink

I would give Dave at wallet recovery service a try. I sent him an old BTC wallet which I had forgotten the password for. I didn’t really give him much information to work with regarding the password itself, and after several weeks he emailed saying he wasn’t successful in recovering the BTC but he would keep it on the back burner. 4-5 month’s went by and I had basically written it off, when I received an email from Dave stating that he had finally recovered my coins. He had taken the pre arranged fee and left the remainder of the wallet for me. Highly recommend his service!
He is good, no doubt about it.  I'd recommend this option as well.  It's worth paying him if he's able to crack your phrase.

That's a big bunch of ether stuck in that wallet @hiraoki
Won't be easy to bruteforce a 20 character code, unless you're certain about part of the password.

A better idea might be to book a wellness resort for a week, and who knows perhaps the code will suddenly pop back up in your head. Worth giving a shot, isn't it? Grin

And I'm from Denmark(I assume you are Swedish), so we can speak in person or on the phone if you decide to maybe do the deal I suggested (50/50 if I break the password, making a written contract is also a possibility to avoid any of us getting cheated)
It's a long shot, but it's worth trying to crack if I can have some insight to what you might have chosen and doing some google scavenging aswell for sentences and quotes)

Well, I'm actually a developer/programmer and would like to give it a go, if you want to share 50/50 if I am able to crack the password given all the information you can, other than that I am not willing to put my money on the line as you could be lying about the details etc(just being realistic here).
But all information regards to it being a phrase is very helpfull, also what language would help a lot as a dictionary combination would be my first goto run.
If you get it sold, great, but if you don't - then hit me up with a PM.

@OP: I can offer 0.1 BTC  Smiley

Its basically a gamble for me - as you correctly stated...bruteforcing can take years.

0.1 BTC now is probably worth more than spending the rest of your life with a wallet which you have no password to.

Alternatively - I can try brute-forcing using GPUs and some custom machine learning algorithms - if I'm successful then we split it 50:50

we are licensed in all these countries i will give you remainibg details later first let me know how you wish to work

I m going to provide more information about potential password to the winner (min. Characters, language, symbols used,...)

I don't think its enough info.

1. Where your wallet exists.
2.  Do you have a private key?
3. json wallet file ? which you were downloaded or not.

Why does it even other you? Stick to scamming people, maybe you will find a dumb person to send you some money. Its way better than pretending that you give a rat's ass about anything else.

Will advise OP to avoid this person.

So did anyone manage to get the 8000 Ethereum out of the wallet yet?

It looks like the owner of the wallet only handed it to one other company and regrets even doing that, so I guess he wants a bit more control over the password cracking service.

I’m in the same boat, but I’m not giving up on my wallet, it’s much less than yours but still too much for me to just let go.

RE: “I don't have the time to bruteforce it (maybe it will take years) “

Last bruteforce estimation I looked at with the full character set required was 27,000 years. That is to say if the password was randomly generated you’ve got buckley’s chance.

But if as you say “It is a phrase with words, so not just random symbols” and you think you know part of the password or its potential components it  there’s a couple of programs you can compile (I did it and my experience using terminal and coding is rudimentary at best) which while limited in their scope can still do quite a lot.

A Brief summary of my experience….

Walletrecoveryservices.com
Decided I would try Dave from walletrecoveryservices as there is plenty of people who vouch for him.
I only had one potential password candidate at this point and to this day I'm still uncomfortable that I sent my wallet file off.
Other than these guys I wouldn’t recommend handing my wallet  over to a third party.

Pyethrecover
https://github.com/ryepdx/pyethrecover
Great for my sanity if not much else, instead of fretting whether I was repeating a password attempt or forgetting a possibility I just thought of. This lets you just save all your password possibilities in one text file and test them.

Ethcracker
https://github.com/lexansoft/ethcracker
This is what I’m working with currently, lets you test a file with password components e.g if you think your password had say 3 parts…

Say one of cat ,dog, or fish,
and one of 123 345 or 567,
and one of @ $ or !

It will try every combination of those components. Cat123@, 345!dog etc etc
CPU only, so takes my setup about 24 hours to run through about 45 million passwords.

Walletrecovery
https://github.com/prabhatsharma/walletrecovery
Haven’t tried this one yet, but it's next! lets you test up to 4 wildcards with your password guesses.

Hope I've encouraged you to have a crack at it...feel free to PM if you have any questions!

my problem is no matter how honest you are, what if you sell and one morning you wake up and go" yes I remember it" and take the funds back, if the buyer claims the coins have been moved there no real proof who it was, win/win seller.

I have to admit, it's interesting, but to risk anything not knowing if I can get it out before Eth drops below what its bought for, I will have to think on it.

I am also willing to sell it for a lower price and split wallet if it could be cracked. I m also open for other proposals.

sorry I just read this, how much would you trust me  Roll Eyes I have some brute force code (with character choices) and a unit I could chuck it on, you would know if I got it as coins would be moving out  Grin have a think.

The best deal for anyone to buy this is to take an offer on a percentage to crack it because the buyer will have to spend a decent amount on paying somone to crack it so the outlay for the buyer to take a risk is not worth it and probably cant be cracked. My offer stands at 30 percent of whats in the wallet if it can be cracked.

By "phrase", do you mean it's random, non related words?   Or is it a coherent phrase from somewhere?

It is a phrase with words, so not just random symbols. (as written above I also could provide more information regarding potential password)

Interesting but a 20 digit phrase would be dam hard to crack, do you have any other details?  Have you had a professional try yet or just throwing this up now....
I already tried, but until now no results.

I'll ask the obvious question - can you sign a message from the wallet or prove what the balance of coins there are?

Welcome to cryptocurrencies, where the # of coins is publicly viewable. The address (as stated in the original post): https://etherscan.io/address/0x6966063aa5de1db5c671f3dd699d5abe213ee902

There are clearly 8000 coins here. No movement since the ETH ICO, meaning its likely he was an early investor and forgot about his coins until now.

That's 77BTC worth of ethereum and since I don't know much about bruteforcing I would suggest you to hire a developer and bruteforce the password, if you know how many characters, if it contains symbols, number etc. Better than you nobody knows about this wallet so this idea could be the best for you. My 2 cents.

Any idea of how many characters the password contains?

It is a phrase, I would say max. 20 characters (low chances that it is more than 25 characters).

Im confused why are you selling something for low ammount even without knowing the password, i mean, whats the interest into a big ammount without the password? Its the same as have 2 milion bitcoins into a wallet and forget the password, its useless, maybe some people will try to get this but its a huge ammount for you be giving to others people, and worse you will tell the potencial password? Looks like more you had hacked and stealed those.

I am confused about your wording. Maybe you don't understand English very well ?
Anyway I am going to respond to your accusations, most people that know me in the bitcoin space can tell you, that I am not stealing from other people  Angry

Why than the low amount ? Because I don't know my password anymore, I don't have the time to bruteforce it (maybe it will take years) and thus I prefer a lower amount now, than maybe finding out my password in the future, understandable ?

I am also not telling the potential password, I can just describe, what language I used, names symbols etc. , all this information could be very helpful to bruteforce it. If you are not interested in it, I totally can understand it, but I don't like beeing accused of theft.

I also could provide original email from when I bought the ether, but this doesn't proof much, as it also could be stolen.
