.13 is horrible efficiency, why would anyone buy these?

The reliability doesnt make up for all that extra power being burnt versus the competition. I sure hope the 9 series lives up to its advertised specs, it would be nice to see Avalon not behind the pack on efficiency which has been the case the entire time I have been in this industry.

I can not tell people to get this over the 841

I can get 97 watts a th on the 841

So far I can't top 120 watts a th on the 851

even though I can go to 14.9 th with this one  the 851  power 1750 watts

I can do 13.5 th on the 841  power about 1400 watts

Unless btc is to the moon   that extra hash  of around 1.4th  is simply not worth  about 350 watts of power.

I am going to fill in this chart

0.0 tested
-0.9 tested >  8hours > 28072 gh  1710+ 1661= 3371 watts = .1200 watts a gh or 120 watts a th  at 88f
-1.0 tested
-1.1 tested > 36hours> 21933 gh  1410 + 1429 = 2839 WATTS = .1294 WATTS A GH OR 129.4 WATTS A th at 91f test ended at 10 pm the 15th of Aug
-1.3 tested
-1.4 tested > 7hours > 21900gh.   1417+1398=2815 watts = .1289 watts a gh or 1289 watts a th at 86f
-2.0 tested
-2.7 tested >14hours >19300gh    1332 + 1309 = 2641 watts = 0.1368 a gh or 136.8 watts a th at 85f
-3.0 tested
-4.0 tested
-5.0 testing> I will try a low watt low noise setting over night

235-240 volts
So two meters

this : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CKSTBX5/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

that :  https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01DSQ30FO/ref=sxts_kp_bs_1?

2 avalon 851's

1 my rig psu

1 corsair psu  atx 1500

room has been 85f to 88f

-0.9   has the best efficiency  but runs hot at 43/92 and 39/88 with 100% fans.

I have some test limits  I do not want to go over 1800 watts   so 0.0  does that  I won't be testing that setting again

think  14.9 th and 1800-1825 watt in a warm room is close

Looks like 21.3 th/s last hour from my read. Two 851's you said?

yep   I just checked  this  morning.

and with the -1.4 setting I am at 2820 watts and  21900 or .1287  per gh  128.7 watts per th

now at stock or 0  I did push  14.9  and 14.7  which is 29.6   but that was with about 3700 watts  that comes out to  .125 per gh or 125 watts per th

The  psu  needs to beefy  to do 1800 watts I have a delta 2400 watt and a hp 2450 watt  that will do it.

the only  case it makes to burn power like that is if btc moons  to 12000 or more really fast

also the units ran hot at stock.

results over night:

https://i.imgur.com/GqMkJ2E.png
https://i.imgur.com/tojDIrI.png
http://solo.ckpool.org/users/1JdC6Xg3ajT3rge3FgPNSYYFpmf53Vbtje

So far I prefer the 841 over this 851

but it is nice to find that  numbers like -1.5 ,-1.4  do work to fine tune

I will setup -1.3  now and test for 12 hours.

Room is hot 90f

-1.3  did boot I will get back with  numbers tonght

GAVE UP ON that setting it was about the same as -1.4

I am now on -0.9

and these are finally getting some where

http://solo.ckpool.org/users/1JdC6Xg3ajT3rge3FgPNSYYFpmf53Vbtje

about 27.1  th and around  3220 watts  in a 90f room

that is 0.1188 a gh or 118.8 a th

I taking these measurements to find a threshold

-1.3 or -1.4  do 21.5 to 21.9 at about 2825 watts  lets say .1289 per gh or 128.9 per th

I am looking to get  a steady 1500 watts at the meters or just under 3000 watts for 2 units

may be the -1 or -1.1 setting will work best.

based on my tests so far  power cranks up  but efficiency actually improved a tiny bit on this -0.9 setting.

I ran the -0.9   for about 8 hours

topped out at 14th x 2 = 28th

https://i.imgur.com/rruEgwH.png
https://i.imgur.com/0RVYO2s.png
http://solo.ckpool.org/users/1JdC6Xg3ajT3rge3FgPNSYYFpmf53Vbtje

I know I can push just a bit more.

If I go to 0  my meters may burn  as they did over the weekend.

so

 0.0 tested
-0.9 tested >  8hours > 28072 gh  1710+ 1661= 3371 watts = .1200 watts a gh or 120 watts a th  at 88f
-1.0 tested
-1.1 testing
-1.3 tested
-1.4 tested > 7hours > 21900gh.   1417+1398=2815 watts = .1289 watts a gh or 1289 watts a th at 86f
-2.0 tested
-2.7 tested >14hours >19300gh    1332 + 1309 = 2641 watts = 0.1368 a gh or 136.8 watts a h at 85f
-3.0 tested
-4.0 tested

-0.9   has the best efficiency  but runs hot at 43/92 and 39/88 with 100% fans.

will drop to -2.7 now  which did boot.  going to do an 8 hour test

I have some test limits  I do not want to go over 1800 watts   so 0.0  does that  I won't be testing that setting again

@ yankees  it does   14.6 to 14.9  at 0 setting   but uses  at least 1600 watts in a cooler room say 77 f

in a hot room  92f

it pulled over 1850 watts on the hp gold  1450 psu
it pull  1790  on a corsair  1500 titanium  I shut that done asap due to fear of killing the psu

I killed one kwatt meter as they like to do under  1800 watts on long tests.

I did discover the -1.5 setting   this has me under 1400 watts  say  1350 to 1375 watts  on each meter  and around 22th

\\
early tests show as of today

If you want an avalon  I would say buy the 841 ..

the 851  seems  to need more power  as much as 1850 watts at  stock in a warm room

I am going to point the two to solo.ckpool  and try -1.4 setting

it does boot and does hash  be back in 2 hours with a report.

here are the 2 miners.

I would hope for 22-23th  at  2800 watts  or better

new meter link from amazon

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CKSTBX5/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Yes  I have been testing for about an hour.

I thought of trying a different approach to clocking the volts.

The new results are decent.  They also bring about a new idea others may want to try.

1) on the stock settings of 0           the 851  hashes as high as 14.9t but uses insane power  more then 1850 watts  which kills most of my meters

--avalon8-voltage-level -1
--avalon8-voltage-level -2
--avalon8-voltage-level -3
--avalon8-voltage-level -4

So I tried all of the above with the 841 and the 851

I like the results  on the 841  but the 851  hashes lower  and burns more power on those  underclock settings

So I started to think outside the box  and opened a whole new world  of clock settings Roll Eyes

--avalon8-voltage-level -1.5       works   which means many others like that may work

my meters show 1350 + 1380 = 2730 watts  that ls .13  watts at the wall or 130 watts per th

at maybe 21000 gh which still sucks  but room is hot  90f

and it now opens  clocks like -1.1 , -1.2 ,-1.3, -1.4   to testing  many more for that matter.

+1 to -4   by tenths  is about 50  settings

Okay I have this squared away for overnight test I am pointing two units to solo.ckpool

Using -2 offset.

Doing about 24 th and cant measure watts on both units until I get a new meter.

The 851 seems to be okay and a bit more power hungry on -2

I need new meters to be sure.

I deleted this info as it was based on the wrong idea about the 851

The Correct info is the 851 is a stand alone miner that needs your psu.

IIRC  this one has  the psu built in  somewhat like the  Innosilcion

Ok, so it must be close to the AvalonMiner 761 design.

this was wrong it is just like the 841  and does not use a built in psu

this was wrong based on an error

Ok, so it must be close to the AvalonMiner 761 design.

Was that the Chinese market only model they released?

this was also wrong

Was that the Chinese market only model they released?

Yes.

They sold it in Chinese and South Korean market only.

I have a picture of it in my thread about my trip in Beijing and visiting Canaan.

Wow that's a significant drop in power consumption; almost 1/3. Hopefully the hash hasn't dropped off to much.

Did you get any results at -3?

And yay, it didn't fry another power meter.

okay at -4

--avalon8-voltage-level -4

settled in at 1260 watts on the corsair 1500ax tit model

have to wait on hash rate to settle it is maybe 12202.40

and 1260/12202 is okay  right near 103 watts a th

that is  spec as this is supposed to be a bit more power hungry

I am going to add a second unit and see what happens.

with 2 of three meters burnt out  and 1 left I can only meter 1 unit not both

3 meters will show tomorrow I can post power use then.

8500 using 950 watts is about 0.111 watts a gh the point of tests like this is to show work arounds it means you could use any 1200 watt atx psu in a pinch even with 120 volt power.
it also allows for use in a hot space during the summer.
this gear should not have overheating issues at this setting if you area to mine is fan cooled  and runs warm in the summer  this setting should work for you.

Just grab the bitmain APW5+ off ebay for like $150-$175 they work great and are rated up to 2600w

I have endless psu's  not that one but   the issue is watts and efficiency.

the gold hp does 2500 watts zero issues.
the plat delta I have does 2500 watts zero issues.

The 851 seems to spend way more power for an extra 1 to 1.5 th

the 841  sets lower  to 12.9 th and burns 1310 watts in a hot room when down clocked

this unit won't get under 1400 watts or even 1500 watts   and it gives me 14.2 to 14.9 th

I don't mind the higher hash rates I do mind the much higher power use-age

my meters tend to overheat and die at 1850 watts plus .

I will try with remaining meter to see what I do at stock setting.

okay so using this psu this morning I killed my power meter

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2450W-Power-Supply-Server-PSU-Plug-n-Play-Wiring-ASIC-GPU-Mining-Rig-10x-PCIe/332624669561?

and before the meter died it was showing 1850 watts for 14900

so far I can't get gear to down clock I get 14200 to 14900  and use 1500 to 1850 watts

I have a second meter will hook it up

But what I want to see is can i get this gear to run at 13500 and 1350 on some kind of a down clock

14.2 to 14.9 th is nice but  not at all the extra power use.

I also ordered a few more meters to test gear.

Looks like it's a power over efficiency model. I wonder if it's something they can adjust through firmware?

I see the first test was voltage-level- -1

And the second was voltage-level-offset -2

if you look here it is obvious my settings are not underclocking the gear.

With the 841 I'm running, when it's above 30C temperatures using the offset command is borderline shutdown? Did you try just the level -2 option?

Were you seeing any change with any of the voltage adjustments from baseline?

It would be a shame to lose that control, as it was a life saver with the 841.

1550 seems high or is just my novice assumption?

actually I am getting worse numbers then that

while the 14,500 hash is nice I got numbers over 1600 watts in a 83f room

I moved it to a hotter room for more testing

I will need to play with settings it will take more then a day to get a feel for what it really does.

My guess is that his RasPi is DOA. 2 out of 3 that I've gotten last month (both branded Avalon ones from Blokforge, separate orders) were dead. In 1 the CPU instantly got literally smokin' hot, the 2nd no signs of life at all. BF of course promptly replaced both.

I don't know if it is dead but I am going to return the 3b+

I ran one 851 overnight

so it runs fine in an 83f room  but  watts are

1550  for 14500 hash

this is using a myrig psu

I have many other psu's  and will start a test today   using the gold rated 2450 watt hp next

I think I will try another watts meter

Don’t know cause I purchased a rasp pi 3b+

So no software for that one just the rasp pi 3.

That's most likely because the Controller in your existing chain of 841s is running pre-851 software.

The 841s and the 851s should work on a Controller that is running post-851 software, as the Controller software for the 851 seems to have retained the code needed to support the 841s.

Simple solutions to simple problems.

Looking forward to the test runs.

Not sure how far out we are from an A9, these are just an optimized version of the 841, and from what you have on the label it looks like just that. I wonder if the voltage settings will work the same as they did for the 841 for this model.

I don't think Canaan will be going the integrated PSU route again, sounds like the 761's were a disaster to deal with. Personally I'd rather source my own PSU anyways.

I don't mind not having the built in psu  which would have been a 861  I found info on it.

The 851 simply appears  to hash  at 14.5 th and 1450 watts

It did not work chained to the   841 chain

but the new rasp pi arrives today should have this running soon

So no attached psu?

No just the miner.

So I ordered a rasp pi as it does not seem to work with  the rasp pi for the 841.

I have a dongle/auc3  and wires on hand.  I will post on this in a bit.

It arrived it looks exactly like the 841

specs on label are different

14500 gh

1450 watts.

I am still running around hard  but right now I will bring 1 of the 2 to the solar array and simply daisy chain it to the 3 841's

Yea, I was hoping to see a fully assembled one get the general idea though. Can't wait for pictures from philip.

We've requested a 851 to blog about, still though little response all around from manufacturers. Since we're not doing technical reviews it will be more of a marketing role and fall on my plate. I do appreciate Lily being responsive she's been great to communicate with.

@ yankees

I don't know how to answer your question

But the avalon  company and I exchange emails pms and have  a relationship.

I also have a relationship with Halong and Yoshi  with the T1's.

Bitmain and I do not have an email or pm relationship.

Innosilicon  and I do not have an email or pm relationship.

So I am naturally  going to favor companies that will work with me and treat me like a valued customer.

If you are a newcomer and don't know any of the companies  a lot depends on your pocket's depth.

also the warranty service has meaning if you have a small setup.  So avalon's 2 year warranty is good if you have under 20 pieces.

If you want to open  a 200 unit farm  bitmain's gear is cheap  and you can buy 220 s9's   for under 120,000  so the 20 are your spares

But a lot of this is a moot point  since new gear will arrive  from  more then 3 companies.

All by Dec 2018

i know but avalons are veryyyyy sensitive. s9 not so hard.

i made efficiency  tests with PSUS and rising ambient temp, PSU almost make no difference in efficiency..

canaan sorcerer psu and bitmains..not much difference bit apw3++ stops working at certain temperature. APW7 can withstand higher temperature

--> efficiency with rising temp: its all about the miner

No  it is a combination  of multiple factors.

psu
miner
load on psu  ie  1500 watts on a 1600 watt psu   is worse then  1500 watts on a 2400 psu.

I also  set the psu's  I tested  next to an ac vent  so that the psu  was ac cooled  in every case with every miner efficiency was better.

My tests with:

s9
avalon 841
Halong T1

with

2400 watt delta    plat
2500 watt hp        Gld
1500 watt corsair  tit
avalon scorcer
bitmain apw3 +
Halong
dell plat

all show ac cooling the psu make it more efficient
all show heat make  the power draw higher.

and the s9  is  less affected by heat as to power draw
the halong T1 has  good selections  of speed to avoid power draw

but that both of the above are more inclined  to drop boards when ambient air temps go over 95f

the avalon 841's  never ever drop boards  even when NJ had a heat wave in early July  and the ambient air  was

 June 27  73f
>
>  June 28  88f
>
>  June 29  90f
>
>  June 30  95f
>
>  July   1    97f
>
>  July   2    95f
>
>  July   3    90f

>
>  July   4    86f
>
>  July   5    88f
>
>  July   6    82f

Data above is from  https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/usa/freehold/historic?month=6&year=2018

Our setup is in this converted barn
I developed a heat shielding method  and the two 1600cfm fans keep the air temps 3 or 4 f lower

So that  loft space  was at 92  when it was 97  both the halongs and the s9's drop boards at those temps

it is supposed to help this.  I have all the youtube videos and tests on the 841's  and under highest temps and settings it can be more then 100 extra watts as you go past 80f up to 97f

97f was max temp test I did.

The apw5 is better and 2600w and the apw7 is pretty good with heat creep now too.

Cool to hear these news, can't wait for you to receive it Smiley

IIRC  this one has  the psu built in  somewhat like the  Innosilcion

Edit not true.  it looks just like the 841 in every way but can go to about 14.8th using more power.

The 851 seems to be 14.5 th at 1350 watts.  edit more like 1550 watts

All lower powered gear below
It looks like innosilicon drops its gear first at 70-75 watts a th. In 2 weeks.

Then pangolin whatsminer m10 due in sept does 65-70 watts a th.

Then gmo at 82 watts in October -   This was a long preorder and buyers will hurt on this one.

Then the a9 maybe nov.   Doing about 65 watts a th.

One question where is the new bitmain?

What are the specs? I'll probably hold out for the 7nm unless the 851 is $1k or less. Seems like a repeat of 821 and first batch buyers will just get burned again when they release more efficient model shortly after that will probably be cheaper. 821 preorder was $2899 and shipped about 2 weeks before 841, which was $1999. I'd imagine not many other than first batch buyers bought the 821. They do have an opportunity to sell a lot of these if specs are equal or better than T2 Turbo and pricing is better than Inno; $1350 currently and shipping in 2 weeks.

Yep, waiting this time around.  Those 821's are good but not that good.   7nm needs to be priced right.

Is Avalon 851 the 7nm miner or a faster 841?

I have not seen official announcements of the 851, and on twitter the 7nm miner leak was called Avalon A9.

https://twitter.com/redtheminer/status/1024307705006022657
Within any Avalon family all use the same chip so the 851 has same 16nm chips as the 821/841's do.

100% truth! During these 100-112 days we had here in Texas my 2 S9s and 1 S9i used up to 4700 watts total when room temp was 108-109 F. Usage would drop down to around 43-4500 in the evenings as it cooled down. All 3 PSUs were APW3+++.

Also meant to say my Whatsminer M3's would use up to 2400 watts each in high temps!

yes the apw3 + does not fare well past 85f

But even corsair 1500 titanium atx has heat creep issues.  it did the best of the 6 psu's I tested.

all psu's I used had heat creep they all want to be under 80f  and they all liked 65f or close to it best.

One thing the 841's can run in a 97f room for days on end they did this during our heat wave.

both the s9's and the T1's dropped boards
not the 841's
