Looks like it will accept an 8 pin PCI connector as well. Man, wish BTC price would rise so I could justify more gear! Feels like such a waste to have 60amps of capacity sitting idle! Drop price to 1BTC and I will buy 10 Cheesy

Problem with that is single point of failure.

It is. Which is why you'd probably break them into groups of 4-8. Although actually I can't remember if I read somewhere that a failure in the chain doesn't actually break the link.

So it runs with separate controller (TP-Link or RasPi), right? Can't see this stated in this review.

What about overclocking? How to do it and what are the results?

Funny to see AntMiner-styled UI.  Grin

Avalon was using that interface before Bitmain even sold their first miners (Avalon 1). Looks like a decent miner, but that price is just not competitive...and no built in controller.

They do have quite a good system in terms of chaining miners which I like, so you could put you're entire farm on one Pi if you felt so inclined.

1.   Photos When Unpacked
This generation is designed as a rectangular prismatic structure and can be joined together by connecting the joint. The surface of the case is sprayed in black color.

Since the 2nd generation, Avalon has a single module design style and is extensible in size, which means the firmware and the heatsink are built in a cuboid case. By designed like this, it is easy for people to assemble this part with the major server, and it is easier and more convenient than other similar devices to arrange large-scale mining fields. The 3th generation of Avalon combined three different individual modules. The similar deign style can be found on the Avalon4.
In front of the mining machine, there is a honeycomb like wind entrance, data line, power line port and a LED lighter for detection as shown in the picture below.

It is easy to find that the mining machine contains two sets of firmware. Each one has twenty Avalon 4th generation chips.

In the back of the machine, it is equipped with a 12cm fan for cooling.

2.   Configuration of the Software
The machine can acquire an IP address automatically and then search for the latest IP device. (It is necessary to notice that some default IP addresses would be 192.168.1.*, but for this machine, it is 192.168.0.*. Therefore it needs to be checked and configured if necessary).
When turning on the power supply, the 4th generation of Avalon’s IP address will be distributed. Type 192.168.0.100 which is the default gateway into the browser and then you can access into Avalon’s dashboard interface.
You can view Avalon’s backstage interface, logo and login information. The default password is empty; click ‘Login’ to log into Avalon’s control panel.

In terms of the operation system, the Avalon4 has a brand new UI design. It offers most-used setting models and the perfect initial settings. Meanwhile, there are multiple choices, if users do not want to experience the latest version, they can use the original UI design. The control panel interface is the latest and the default dashboard configuration has been provided. You can also view the dashboard interface in the advanced version. The following screenshots are the demonstrations of the new dashboard interface.

The highest hash rate can reach to 1.09T, and the lowest amount is 0.86T. There is no obvious fluctuation.
If the mining machine runs normally, the color of the LED light signaling the working status will be green.

3.  Avalon Manufacturer Tips
•   The AUC and 4-pin data cable are all hot-pluggable. The double hot-pluggable function makes sure that it is simple and easy to run the machine;
•   Every module has its own DNA, which means it is easy to find the problem when malfunctions occur;
•   The machine can adjust the power pressure automatically. Ideally, it can reduce to 570W per single machine;
•   The fan can be adjusted automatically, which depends on the mining condition to adjust to the suitable temperature;
•   If the temperature increases above the limit, the power will be cut off automatically;
•   The machine will make an alarm if there is a problem, by using a LED light;
•   The software will search for the target miner (when red LED flicker is shining);
•   All the module parameters are set independently, which means it saves electricity when having massive mining;
•   There is no demand for resetting the data. All the data will be well set when turning on the machine.

4.  Conclusion
•   It has huge improvements in many aspects compared with the 2nd generation;
•   The overall delicate deign guarantees the machine to run effectively and save lots of rooms for massive mining deployment;
•   Theoretically,it can runs a maximize amount of 100 Avalon4 together. To some extend, it can save the mining cost. In addition, the UI I easy to use. But one drawback is that there is only a English version;
•   In terms of the function, the initial chip frequency is default: 445:385:370. The average number should be 0.95T in auto control model, and the power is around 670W. Generally speaking, the machine fits in the official standard;
•   In terms of the noise, so far this generation is the quietest mining machine among the Avalon series. In normal working conditions, it is hard to hear the noise if standing far from the machine. When the fan is in high-speed working conditions, one can hear a little more noise than a personal computer’s. But this condition is only suitable with a ventilated and low temperature mining environment. If you are plan to run the machine in a closed room,it is necessary to take account of the noise level when the fan reaches its peak;
•   This machine has a good performance in cooling. The temperature of the chip of a running machine is between 38°C and 43°C, and the temperature of the cooling fin is tested to be 39°C. Only a little bit warn can be felt near the fan;
•   It allows overclocking and underclocking. There are multiple models that can be chose based on personal demands. Users can select different frequency and voltage. These functions can let the mining machine have a longer life span.
