If there is an option that you can do to add security for your wallet then apply it, I have back up most of my wallet in 10 copies that I can remember in different emails and places just to be sure, registration is for online wallets if you had one then you will need to register on their sites and apply all security that is available from that wallet, But offline wallets with private key is more secure than online wallets.
Do I just have to make a copy of my wallet.dat file?
If referring to bitcoin core then yes, that would be sufficient.

Having the wallet.dat file is only enough to recover bitcoins if lost that's if it hasn't been compromised in the meantime that's why it's a good idea to encrypt your wallet.If you do encrypt your wallet (and you should, to protect against malware stealing it), then you'll also need your passphrase for the wallet when you want to restore it and reopen it.

Make multiple copies of your wallet.dat & store them in different locations. I have three copies on different USB keys in different locations.
