A sig ban is useless. People are naive
A lot of the banned users are already using another account and they won't come back to use the previous

Then the ban itself is useless, right?

Also since he is actually asking for an appeal I think he WILL come back to use the previous. But what do I know.

Anyway I was happy to read hilarious' quote in the CM thread, and hope seeing more sig banns for one time offenders that contribute to the forum otherwize.

The ban was shocking to me. This really shows that bitcointalk is a very fair forum.
His case should be handled differently notwithstanding. I hope he's pardoned by Theymos after some weeks, his sig ban  reduced a bit more(2 months maybe?) or the forum could decide his fate via voting?

I still do not understand why someone will plagiarize another person's work without acknowledging the original writer. It is stealing but your suggestion is a better way to handle this offence for a crime committed that long time ago. Two months signature ban for Cellard or any other poster in that category who have helped this forum should be justice. Not one year. Come on, this forum maybe their only source of income.

It's not as easy as just creating a new account like it was pre-merit days.
They have no problem to get the merits needed to rank up.
Says the person who received zero merit in ~18 months....

Am I looking like someone who gives a fuck about getting merit? Lulz
I am not as active in the forum as many of you, I'm not interested to rank up either,
If this account was one of them do you think I would be stupid enough to post this

I changed the ban to 60 days + 1 year sig ban seeing as it's a post from years ago and you seem to have contributed decently since.

Good luck to them trying to build a high ranking account from scratch. It's not as easy as just creating a new account like it was pre-merit days.

And do you think, they didn't anticipate this before? Do you think they have only 1 account here? No, they already have other ranked accounts.
They just leave the previous and use another.

Does the sig ban apply to alts as well? E.g. if the user already has existing high-rank alts.

And what's the policy on repeated offences? Or new reports on old offences?

I agree with this solution hilarious. A perm ban for something done years ago is unfair & excessive.

Great modding.

An account is your identity on bitcointalk. Sig ban is the minimal punishment for them. They can still use the forum, post using their original account. That's the purpose of sig ban.
The above user cellard is an old member, have good quality post too. Cellard has built an identity here since 2014, if he get banned, he can never come back with the same identity. Therefore, sig ban is the best for now.

Hey just thought I'd drop this here from the Chipmixer thread.

~snip~
Plagiarism. It'll probably get changed to a sig ban though since the post that was reported was from 2014 and he seems to be a half-decent poster. I'll look into it later.

This was in reference to you. Good luck, at least it sounds like you'll be able to come back with your account. Not sure how long it will take.

My account was banned within the recent massive ban wave for "spam/plagiarism".

https://bitcointalksearch.org/user/cellard-381705

I honestly don't remember copy-pasting stuff, but im not going to deny it if it's really the case. When I joined the forum years ago I was young. I've probably posted under sleep deprivation as well. But im not going to add any excuses, I just think it's not fair.

I believe I have done more good than harm. Of those 3788 posts, it must be a tiny % that caused this, and I bet it's from years ago. Basically 99.9% of the content is legit. I've even received merit from theymos. I felt really good learning as I evolved here on the forums for the past 5 years. Made many friends and connections along the way. Now everything is gone. I can't even answer my PMs.

What can I do? people make mistakes. Whatever I did I will accept my fault, but have some perspective, I think permabaning in my case is overkill. It's the equivalent of life imprisonment forums wise. I already sent an email but I doubt those are even considered so I want to post here and hopefully this is looked case by case and something can be done about it. I feel very nostalgic about the forums lately, and I wanted to come back and be a bit more active but this has been pretty depressing. Im just asking for a second chance.
