You may see this as "unjust" if you are a Russian or support Russia, but you shouldn't have bombed civilians if that was the case.

If Russia wants to "protect its borders from Europe" which makes no sense, I would love to have borders with them, not like we could expect Europe to go into war with Russia first, only retaliate but even assuming that, then just start doing the exact thing to Europe, instead of attacking and killing civilians. You are not sure about Ukraine getting nukes or not? Put plenty on Belarus, you are worried about Turkey?

Put some in Checnya and Georgia or whatever else they have, hell even Azerbaijan which is known to be friendly with turkey, but would love nukes because of Armenia. All in all just do what they do, not kill innocent civilians.

Banning Russia from SWIFT would negatively affect most European countries that depends on Russia for oil, gas and other products.
It is only Ukraine that can defend its sky. NATO can only give military assistance.
NATO combatants cannot be sent to Ukraine because they are not part of NATO.

Depends if what is the reply all about, if it's for emergency then it is understandable but if it's from non-important stuff, that must be questioned. Last time their government is asking for donations on Twitter, maybe he is replying to that? but I didn't know yet that Russia have also invaded other residing countries, it seems that they are not contented yet with one country but they want to own more countries.

I don't know what is happening with their president, is he out of his mind already. Of course, all of us here are worried because this is a serious issue and I believe that Ukraine are also treating it the same they are also serious, you only miss understood them.

As bad as the war in Ukraine is, it seems their President still has time to reply to Twitter.  Isn't it like he looks so relaxed with the conditions in his country.  Even though we all know that currently Russia and its allied countries have moved to invade the areas closest to them to control.  Isn't everyone already very serious about this war condition that has the potential to trigger WW3?  But not with the behavior of the Ukrainian president.

NATO countries are heavily dependent on gas and oil from Russia. The amount of gas that Russia supplies to Europe accounts for 40% of the total gas that Europe imports every year. Perhaps they were hesitant to help Ukraine out of fear that Russia would stop supplying gas.
But I think we were wrong: America sent anti-tank missiles, Germany sent tanks and tons of fuel, Britain sent anti-tank weapons and other military equipment... and a lot of member countries NATO members did not stand by and act. I think they will find a way to bring Putin to the negotiating table. Maybe they will also be the losers if the calculation is wrong. But by all means stop this war.

I'm so sorry that you have to experience and witness such horrendous activities by the military in your beloved country. It's quite unfortunate that Russia's president, Putin chose a violent and chaotic way to express his decisions instead of addressing them in a calm and diplomatic manner. The Russian military's advantage on your country and wreaking havoc on almost everything in sight despite the sot of civilians' lives is devastating and heartbreaking. It's been all over the news for a few days now. I really do hope that the peace talks would happen and may there be agreement and settlement of this conflict once and for all. A lot of people, industries, and establishments have been lost due to this war. I wish there would be no more casualties.

I really do hope that Putin will at least listen to the voice of his constituents at the very least if he doesn't want to do anything with Zelenskyy. After all, the voice of the masses should be heard and addressed.

There is no guarantee that he won't be killed at any moment and he is still fighting along the soldiers and maybe even killed someone, just to protect his country, or barely survived death, who knows? When was the last time we have ever seen a leader lead their country in a war? Especially when it was a defensive war?

I mean not like I know the worlds history all that well, so I could be wrong, but at this scale and this much media and this much knowledge? I can guarantee you that for the past 100+ years we haven't heard of a "general" leading the war themselves with their soldiers.

It is all people who are in suits talking in palaces and castles and voting to open war and so forth in senates just so they could send soldiers to oversees and get them killed for political power. He definitely became the next Ataturk of the world, something I never thought would happen in my life time.

Hours back Russia have closed its skies for 27 countries. Already it has closed the skies for Bulgaria, Poland and Czech Republic. Now it looks like Germany, France and more European countries added to the list. Earlier European countries banned Russian flights for specific time period. Now Russia is making the same decision as the countries that closed skies for Russian flights. This is going to make the economy even worse. For now we can't predict what is gonna happen with both the countries.

I hate to break this to you OP but this isn't the right platform to do this, for one, you're not going to get anywhere and this forum doesn't have a big traffic and I think you're going to have more luck in the cesspool we call Twitter because you can have your message delivered there to more people. Your wish to have Russia removed from SWIFT was granted though.

There is a full-fledged war going on here, with death, destruction, grief, tragedies of people, families, entire cities! I see everything not from TV, I see it personally now - I now serve in the Territorial Defense.
To be honest, I did not expect such a wide, international support for Ukraine! This is the total support of all countries, all peoples - I thank you all from the bottom of my heart, for everything - from words of support to financial assistance! For all the decisions that you make to help Ukraine, sometimes even to your own detriment. Thanks a lot !

Now the civilized world has almost completely united in support of Ukraine in order to resist the brazen aggression of the Putin regime. Europe has finally realized that Ukraine is now protecting not only its independence, but also Europe and its moral values. Therefore, now the economic interests of each state are fading into the background. Germany, Italy and Hungary have already agreed to disconnect Russia from SWIFT, but there are still some contradictions, so SWIFT will be disabled in the near future only for some large Russian banks. But even the sanctions adopted before that are enough for the Russian economy to collapse very quickly, since every day it will lose about 20 billion dollars. We will soon see how Russia will not care about international sanctions.

The statement had a huge welcome here.But Sending NATO to Ukraine was not a easy one. Both U.S and China need to support this pact. Russia is a Big powerful in the NATO. So the movement of Russia into the Ukraine should be stop in a short interval of time period. United States should influence to solve this issue.

Germany just decided to send tanks and so forth to Ukraine's help as well. USA and UK already did a lot of horrible financial strains, basically as much as cutting all financial ties and keeping all Russian money in their nation. Russia is back to 2016 levels of economy ON TOP OF all the inflation. Imagine if you were making the same money you did during 2016 but with today’s prices, could you even survive that? You would be so much worse, I would probably be going hungry.

At the end of the day, Russia is getting all they deserve with the exception of getting a fight back. Ukrainians are fighting back, but other nations are not helping in the war efforts, just regular words and so forth.

I hope you are okay today as the fourth day of Russia invasion of your country and you have to stay safe and hang on with your family. Your country is now seeking for volunteers, you can do that if you are a man and within the age to do so. Having arms will also help you to defend yourself. Hang on, talks for peace will soon start but I don't support NATO to be involved in this because it may further the fight instead of peace negotiation.

If one or few persons makes a decision, would it be fair to punish everyone with disconnecting them from swift? Is it possible to figure out which accounts belongs to officials and freeze only them? For example regular Russian can not influence on higher ranked people, but must suffer from  other people decision. If someone disconnects me or limits for other people deeds, I would be angry on everyone. "We are fighting fire with fire".

If you guys think that it’d very hard to ban any country from the SWIFT then you should be reading the news carefully. Many major banks have already been banned from the SWIFT transaction so that they won’t be able to make commercial payments and thus impacting the ability of Russia to move any uncertain large amounts of money out of the country. This could destroy the ability of banks working properly and the country itself could have unforeseen transactions from rival countries too.

I see from news that Russia is ban from SWIFT. It is effected world economy, different agreements and increasing products price. We don't know what is going on Russia and Ukraine war. War is always harmful and painful for the human as we knew from World war-I and World war-II. So, stop War.

Banning Russia from SWIFT would cause problem in Europe too. Supply of natural gas will be disrupted and already sky rocketing price of fuels will create chaos to other EU countries. Winter is not over yet so i do not think it will be wise to do that before finding a better alternative to control the situation. NATO is already in the war unofficially.

Its always the leaders who wants the war more than soldiers themeselves, and based on their duties they follow those orders.I dont understand why more power,why more pain,more deaths. No citizens deserves this.At the end we leave on the same planet. Well, lets just hope that this problem quickly finish and people in Ukraine can live in peace.

Sadly, sanctions are nothing more than crumbs because Putin is a wise man. Zelensky mentioned that Ukraine should receive modern weapons, ammunition, food, medicine, and money as well. Due to the fact that Ukraine is not a member of NATO, other countries cannot help to fight Russia. Several Russian banks have been expelled from SWIFT by the US and EU. But why some? Feel sorry for Ukrainian people, so many peoples lives are at risk especially children.I am also not happy that this is happening, and i wish everythimg ended peacefully.But the President of Ukraine stated that they do not want to make peace with Russia.

They didnt even think about innocent people,despite of the current situation pandemic. There current administration is more focus on war. Hopefully, this war will gonna end up soon.

Something tells me that Putin being as smart as he is. He knew all these sanctions and SWIFT disconnection would happen and he prepared well in advance a few years back.

From what I gathered many of the Russian money is overseas pretty much and has been accumulating for the last few years, they also own tons of Gold. So there is a good chance that most of the money in Russian banks are not Putin’s but the citizens of Russia which will hurt the most. Heard there is a withdraw limit in place even.

I’m sorry to hear about your family but why would NATO protect Ukraine? The Ukrainian‘s need to defend themselves and their sovereignty. The only support NATO countries would provide is participating in sanctions, but even then it’s still up to Ukraine to force Russian troops out of their country. It would be beneficial for NATO to provide arms to the Ukrainian people, but of course that would never happen because Eastern Europe needs their Russian oil. You can thank the US and Nord Steam 2 when they failed to sanction NS2 in 2021.

These number of casualties only came Ukraine tally, Russia reports otherwise, 3500 is more reasonable number if they are on offensive.
Talking about running out of fuel, shells and food is unreasonable as well, knowing russia is just a 1 step ahead in Ukraine.
Idk why they keep telling these information to media this way, like they are winning when their cities are often receiving bombings and air strikes. Even this numbers are true, Russia's force is way more bigger than this.

Russia still have access to the markets in China and Asia, so even if the West bans SWIFT and imposed sanctions on the country, they will still find a way to finance this war they're waging on. Also, it seems that China is with Russia on what's happening in Ukraine, too, and they are ready to send some support to Russia in terms of money if it comes to that. Europe can't also afford to stand against Russia for too long, as they need that oil from Russia as well. Sanctions will hurt Russia a lot, but Europe and the West would also be hurt in some ways, too.

they are closing in in cutting the russia off from SWIFT as per this article - EU Close to Cutting Russia Off From SWIFT Over Ukraine Invasion . if this invasion will create more bloodshed and more bombings in the next coming days, they will definitely impose this restriction. however, putin maybe ready for this because he already calculated his move and maybe preparing this for years.
NATO can't enter because Ukraine is not yet part of this alliance, so they can't be aggressive in helping Ukraine. but more then likely, the borders around ukraine which are part of nato are already weaponised and guarded. i have the feeling that putin will do all what is needed to win this war at all cost. he doesn't care how many people will lose their lives in this war. it is not in his morale

Banning Russia from SWIFT would be a strong sanction that will definitely hurt Russia. It seems that all the European countries that opposed removing Russia from SWIFT before are changing their minds right now. It could be that already next week all countries will agree to the new sanctions. As for NATO to enter Ukraine, I don't think there is any chance for this.  Ukraine could use the help of NATO fighters to help get air superiority. But Russia is a nuclear power and stated publicly they would attack anybody who will intervene in the war. The western world can only send more weapons, ammunition, financial aid and other support equipment. Sending official soldiers is not an option at the moment. I hope Ukraine can hold out.

adaseb, Russia wasn't banned from Swift because of Germany, Italy and Hungary whose govs and riches have strong ties with Russia. But it seems that there's finally some consolidation, and SWIFT is likely to happen very soon.

But, of course, with everything happening very fast and no real way of fact-checking, some might not believe this information. As for how they died in such numbers, the answer is simple: Ukrainians are fighting fiercely against the invasion. I come from the intellectual circles, and a professor of philosophy I know joined the armed resistance. A female student of philosophy whom I also know personally joined civilians who are making Molotov cocktails to throw at Russian military vehicles (it works, btw, there've been many successful attacks like that). A popular Ukrainian blogger whom I've been watching for a while is now also a part of the regional military force. Regular civilians are monitoring the situation, looking for suspicious people and markings, reporting them all to the police. This is our country, and the main value of the Ukrainian nation has always been freedom. I guess Putin just forgot about it, again.

Russia is not easy to look down really. Among the sanctions that they have got, the European countries and US have also allowed the oil and gas industry to continue and this means it is a selective sanction because they are being careful about the effect on other European countries , and this may not have the sanction to be effective. Russia is a world power after US and this is going to be a tough time for Europe sanctioning Russia.

They are quite aware of the ban right from the on set but choose to use sanction, one thing you should understand is that they have the power to place the ban but wouldn't considering those that will be affected alongside. Also remember that Russia is not just an ordinary country you could do and undo upon when it comes to war and millitary power, they are fierce in this regards, even US and China dare not trespass them in this regards, they don't just have weapons they build it themselves.

I think the impact of NATO could go along in such situation while to cap it all, if China could join in this fight against Russia then things may come to normalcy but will cost lots of life.

     Now about the swift ban, it won't be as easy as saying ban it. Mutual agreement within the members are required and I don't believe that all are in favor of this there is just so much at stake with this decision. Everyone wants some benefits and Russia clearly can offer good ones and have done so all throughout the years. But let's say it does get banned from Swift there can still be quite a few options for Russia and loopholes to exploit. Not to mention that this could trigger a bigger animosity that could actually lead to a world war. The problem is not related to the ban. Countries such as Sudan, Iran, North Korea have been banned from SWIFT, but with the country that will be banned.

@t309n, I am sorry for your situation, but even if Ukraine is in NATO, it would take weeks or even months for these bureaucrats to agree on helping a NATO member. It is a completely different matter when NATO is used to bomb countries like Libya out of some of its interests, but when it needs to act against a strong and powerful enemy, then they hide like mice in their holes.

I am very sad to hear about that. I can understand your emotion. I know you are more worried about your family and lives. I hope everything will be better. The world have to care about Ukraine. I was weeping to hear that people there are in danger and none of the nation came to protect them. We hope for the peace to establish there and people start to live happily again.

So much for Russians and Ukrainians being "brothers", any Russian in Ukraine or who supports Putin now is on the side of evil. I cannot see NATO doing much, as it is there to protect member states and cannot be the aggressor. However it looks like individual countries are starting to ramp up and deliver much more weaponry to counter this blatant attack on an innocent people who only wanted freedom and democracy. Russia offers them nothing except pain and violence to comply, no wonder they wanted to be closer to the EU.

Expelling a country from SWIFT is not an easy decision taken lightly. Previously Iran was removed in 2018. USA and Germany would stand the most to lose if Russia is disconnected from the SWIFT network. Also remember that Russia has the System for Transfer of Financial Messages (SPFS) that has been worked on since 2014 as a potential plan B in case of ever being disconnected from SWIFT.

I did not know that there were so many Russian casualties, 3500 is a great number if that information is true. How could Putin let them killed in less that 3 days only. Are you sure it is credible, if so, it is hardly to just let go of Ukraine with talks, it would hurt him. When discussing the issue of disconnecting Russia from SWIFT, Germany, Italy, Hungary and Cyprus opposed this proposal as of yesterday morning. By evening, Germany and Italy had already agreed on the need to disconnect Russia from the SWIFT international banking system.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is giving a good rebuff to the Russian invaders, although stubborn battles are taking place in most of its territory.

During the first two days of a large-scale war, more than 3,500 Russian invaders were killed, about 200 were taken prisoner, 102 tanks, 536 various armored vehicles, 14 combat aircraft and 8 helicopters were destroyed.  The enemy attack began to falter. They run out of fuel, shells, food. After all, Putin was counting on a blitzkrieg, and he clearly miscalculated.
The Ukrainian armed forces are repelling attacks in all directions with the active support of the population, which is formed into territorial defense battalions. In Kyiv, 14,000 machine guns were distributed to the population to repel the Russian bulk.

This is the point. The economic sanctions would not only screw Russia, but also many countries that have trade relations with it with a large volume of business. Let's see how this turns out. So far, historically, trade sanctions have not helped much.

Not every "business" has been sanctioned. So they still need the banking system. And then some EU countries like Germany (not confirmed) are opposing the ban because the ban will do more harm to their economy than to Russia due to them being dependent on energy. And even if they did ban Russia from SWIFT, they would be able to use other means for bank to bank transaction. And don't forget. They have China with them and they can start using CIPS for cross border transaction.

I am surprised they didn’t do the SWIFT ban on Russian since they all did the sanctions and they also forbid to do business with many Russian banks.

Why do they refuse to ban SWIFT exactly? They are afraid some companies will have trouble sending and receiving money from banks? But aren’t they sanctioned anyways from doing business with Russia anyways. This is what I don’t understand.
