I have never tried it.
From the way it looks, however, I rate the option as "works multiple times".
I wonder if it only works once for VIP users!? I think even they can change the displayed name multiple times.

Beats me, I saw someone actually posted that earlier somewhere.

No way I'd be able to be one myself in a thousand years

Can you guys like do it everytime or it's a one-time thing like the VIPs?

Yes, even the ordinary staff can do that Smiley
I can confirm that I discovered this option in my profile some time ago (by accident).

Only admins can change someone's name, though Global mods can change their own too (maybe other staff but I'm not 100%).

There's no such safety measures implemented to stop somebody from impersoning staff using a slightly different username.

That's not actually true. There's is some sort of restriction on creating names similar to certain users, especially staff. I remember on one of the April Fool's day I tried changing my name to something like hilariousandbro or hilariousandcrow or something and it wouldn't let me as it was prohibited. I changed it to something similar after a few tries but then had to get theymos or maybe cyrus to change it back as my original name was getting caught in the block haha.

Changing username is allowed ? How is it done ?

Aside from impersonation-types of usernames, I'm fairly sure that anything goes--including curse words.  I think I've come across quite a few of those kinds of usernames in the past, so the forum isn't exactly censoring selection based on language.
Let's see: LoyceV's complete List of all Bitcointalk usernames:
Usernames with:
  • fuck: 628
  • asshole: 28
  • cunt: 175
  • scam: 11,630
  • loyce: 16
  • bastard: 97
  • wanker: 12
  • bollocks: 5
(Yes, I had to Google those last 3, I'm not that creative myself)

I love freedom of speech Cheesy

Exceptions to the rule:
Code:
116564: SatoshiDICE_PR
142358: SatoshiDICE_Kat

A person who is coming on the forum very first time won't use the similar usernames like that of any trusted high ranked popular member or an admin. This tactic will only be done by those who know the forum very well and they try to make such accounts for the purpose of scamming only.
Actually: it's quite common for users to add a character when the username they want is taken already. I would guess that's how DarkStar_ got his username, and not because he wanted to impersonate DarkStar.

Changing username is allowed ? How is it done ?

Only if you're a VIP (which costs 50 BTC) or by PMing theymos.

But the latter must be supported by a very very good reason, such as conflict of interest that happens after your account rank has reached a senior status. Otherwise, he won't entertain your request.

I don't think this feature can be abused. A person who is coming on the forum very first time won't use the similar usernames like that of any trusted high ranked popular member or an admin. This tactic will only be done by those who know the forum very well and they try to make such accounts for the purpose of scamming only. People are clever enough to distinguish between the ranks. I never heard anyone on bitcointalk getting trapped in such scam of giving any information or money to impersonating user.
Somehow this reminds me of this user especially for those people that are customizing their own Trust List. It's not that usual impersonation of reputated users, but surely is deceptive when people add the user in their trust list with  "~".

Surely that user knew how the trust system works.

@OP
Aside from what others mentioned above, it would do just fine as there is already restriction to some names. One might receive neutral tag if the username s/he uses is similar or close to a reputated user/s in here, but it is just a matter of note to avoid confusion as there are users here that have an alt for various purposes like separation of business account to accounts that are being used in unsafe networks.

The underlying program SMF that this Forum is powered by has provision to add any and all words, real, or made up to it's list of banned from being used when registering a new user account.

Names such as those exampled previously in this thread are no doubt already on that list, but other words such as "forum" or indeed bitcointalk are probably added to prevent e.g bitcointalk.net being registered as a user name.

Is there currently some protection to stop a new user from using usernames like officialbitcointalk or names similar to other mods ?

If such a feature is not present, it should be implemented otherwise it can be abused.

This is an interesting kind of thread and not something I'd ever really considered before, not even that usernames with "satoshi" in them were forbidden.  I definitely didn't know that, and it's kind of a nice gesture to reserve that specific string of characters for bitcoin's founder.

There are similar usernames on the forum, like for example darklord & DARKlord, people may assume the two account is controlled by one person or one is the alt of the other. A neutral tag by the older account solves the problem.
I'd say a negative tag is more appropriate if the usernames are similar enough such that there's a high probability that the newer account is trying to impersonate the older one.  That's happened a number of times since I've been a member here.

also SatoshíNackamoto (https://bitcointalksearch.org/user/satoshinackamoto-406290) didn't get a negative trust.
He spelt the name Nakamoto as Nackamoto on purpose to cheat the system.

when creating my account I tried the username satoshiprincess. It didn't work beacuse the name contained Satoshi. The creators of bitcointalk reserved the name Satoshi, other names may be reserved also.
It's the first time I've heard of such restrictions, does anyone know when they were applied? Huh

I did a search for the name Satoshi and found some accounts with that name. It is wrong to impose restrictions on every Satoshi name and this account for example ----> SatoshiDICE_PR.

also SatoshíNackamoto didn't get a negative trust.

In short, it should be taken case by case.

Here i is actually "  í " . He is abusing the system . Kind of bypass of not allowance of the word satoshi.

Satoshi and bitcointalk username is a reserved word and also theymos. If you input the username such as satoshi or satoshibitcoin an error will appear and it says that "The username you tried to use contains the reserved name 'satoshibitcoin'. Please try another username". When i'm a newbie i also tried to input "satoshicoin" and got the same results.

I believe the reason is also to avoid imposters. That's why it cannot be used.

I will also do testing and share results.

Another word that one cannot use in username is bitcointalk. I tried it and got error

"The username you tried to use contains the reserved name 'bitcointalk'. Please try another username."

Another reserved word is theymos

The username you tried to use contains the reserved name 'theymos'. Please try another username.

There's no such safety measures implemented to stop somebody from impersoning staff using a slightly different username.

That's why all PMs from newbies carry a message like this:

when creating my account I tried the username satoshiprincess. It didn't work beacuse the name contained Satoshi. The creators of bitcointalk reserved the name Satoshi, other names may be reserved also.

I just tried that and I can confirm that "satoshi" is a reserved word. There may be others too, but there's no way to find them out other than by asking an administrator.

Not as much as I know of, but red flags for sure are newbie accounts.

They won't go far before getting banned.
