I installed a Android wallet called Bread.  It works great and currently doesn't have any money on it.

I wanted to transfer my account  to Electrum.  So when I set up Electrum, I clicked on import key and used my address from Bread which has no money (as a test)   Now, it appears to work- which actually concerns me Grin

It appears to me that anyone can get your wallet money as long as they have your address.  Is that right?  It doesn't sound right to me as when you send money to anyone that would get the address you are sending it from- so anyone can steal anyone's bitcoins.  What am I missing?
See the address is which you mention to receive bitcoins in to your wallet. It is publicly displayed no compromise in security of your wallet by displaying it.Private key is the seed generated when you open a new electrum wallet. It should be kept safe.Unless a thief gets access to your private keys, your bitcoins would remain safe in your wallet.

Not right. Anyone can get your money if he or she has your private keys. Only the address is not enough. Bitcoin addresses are public so there's no need to worry about that. Just be sure to never disclose your private keys to strangers!
