Confirmed: Vitalik Buterin was SIM-swapped (and got his number back): https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/16gfkil/so_it_turns_out_vitalik_was_actually_simswapped/

His session cookies were NOT swiped.

The kicker here is that none of this would've happened if he had 2FA OTP enabled on his account.

I mean, I can't really blame him for that, I don't have OTP on Twitter either, but then again, I'm not a huge target for criminal entrepreneurs. I really think people like Vitalik should have OTP on their social media at all times.

I would like to know how Vitalik Buterin account was hacked and who is to blame for the fact that his followers lost their money. I think it will not be difficult to find out, and in this case the guilty party should compensate the victims. In any case, the financial condition of neither Musk nor Buterin will not suffer much from this.
Vitalik Father tweeted that his son is already recovering his twitter account couple of minutes after the phishing tweet was made using Vitalik twitter. Until now the Twitter account of Vitalik doesn’t show any activity which means he still doesn’t regain it. The reason for the hack is unknown or if Vitalik will compensate with the victim.

One thing is for sure that “twitter security is not designed as financial platform” according to CZ so we people out there should always use common sense as CZ advice to the public.

There are two who can be blamed for lost money
- Legally the scammer
- Morally the scammer and the victims because they were greedy as *** and just went in without caring

Just imagine some influencer dies and 12 months later somebody ends up with his phone number as they are recycled everywhere and decides to pull the scam, who will you blame? The dead influencer? The phone company that did what it has done for years as per their contract? The social media website that will have from now on to phone every user every day to see if they are still alive and ask every user if they are still the ones in control of their account?

As you mentioned we have not heard of data belonging to famous people being leaked, it raises a question about why private exchanges via DM have not been released from hacked X accounts. I suppose there is a difference between hacking to steal funds and hacking to steal private messages with intent to blackmail.

Hackers that target X seem to show no interest in accessing DMs which could be a lucrative business for them. If the hack is server based and not related to a password being used, that could explain part of the issue but it is surprising.

What surprises me is that if accounts are so easily hacked, how do they protect their data? That is to say, we have not heard of any famous person’s data being leaked or even a report of the loss of currencies, so the matter is a little confusing as it is either a lack of interest on their part or a problem with all social media applications.

People should be careful not to click on any link on any social platform, there is no free meal, the only free things are rainwater and bird droppings.

This just proved that even notable personality's accounts can be hacked so it's always important to apply all the necessary measures when checking posts coming from personalities you're following, you are in a Cryptocurrency environment where hackers are actively hacking notable people to deceive their followers.
People have so much trust in Vitalik that over $691,000 was lost by victims by clicking that malicious link, it's easy to lose everything with one click so avoid interacting with your wallet and keep your system free, every day security should be our main concern, even when we surf the clean site you just never know what lies ahead.

Same happen like this forum, if there's a trusted user want to trade with you and he ask you to send first, you must ask him to sign a message.

This applicable to trusted non custodial wallet too, if the site is hacked and you downloaded a fake wallet, anything that valuable in your device would gone. That's why you must prepare to download the wallet in secondary device and verify the key.

why do people not think before they act, I am not surprised that there are people who fell for the scam especially if they are new to cryptocurrency but for the love of god, this type of hack and scam has been happening and is well documented on the internet, especially in the crypto community, why can't people just do a bit of research or be more cautious, doing both of that would save them a lot of headache.

There’s a lot of blind follower on twitter which they can easily send money to a random address given by the twitter account of their social media influencer that they are following in return for a possible profit since there’s a lot of unexpected profit before on crypto like airdrops comes from random trading on DEX and many more.

I remember reading a tweet of popular influencer of shitcoin that drop an eth address with a description of send money here to be scam and he still get millions of dollar since many of his follower is very hungry to invest early on one of his meme coin that print a huge profit.

So yeah, Social media people like on twitter are the worst that’s why scammer are feeding on their money.  Cheesy

This is where you can see that people are not doing their strategy to understand the thing they are investing it. They are blindly following someone that is influential on the cryptocurrency space but not really about advises.

I believe everyone should be able to have their opinion and know what they are investing. It should always be DYOR.

I do not think that a person like VITALIK would forget to perform a simple setting such as two-factor authentication, and I do not think that his tweets indicate that there is another person managing that account, and therefore such hackers may be a social attack or due to the lack of Twitter staff or someone trying to send him a message.

If they can hack his accounts, they can hack any of us. I guess the only difference is that hackers don't find us interesting.
When people become big they don't have time to maintain their social network. They hire people to manage those networks and they get paid a lot of money for doing it. So when a celebrity or a person with huge influence get their account hacked, it does not make me surprise. On the other hand, you, me, and others who have enough time for us keep our things [if we are in social media] in our hand. If this is important to us then we use every security measures available like 2FA and things.

I do not think a social media account for VITALIK and other high end influencers have any importance.

Ethereum founder and other crypto well known people continue to remain careless for hackers to scam people using their account, I too will say they do not care about their followers.
Obviously they are not in control of their own social accounts. As explained above.

What strikes me about this is that he's not just any old nerd: gifted child, cryptographer, former board of directors chairman of the Tor Project, won a bronze medal in the International Olympiad in Informatics in Italy, about $0.6B of net worth....

If they can hack his accounts, they can hack any of us. I guess the only difference is that hackers don't find us interesting.

There are many movements in that address, all from today. I guess the scammers are getting their rewards.

That guy never had your interests in mind anyway, so I really don't get why people worship him.
I will agree. This is not new again. I mean it is not new again that Twitter account of people like Vitalik Buterin are hacked. It occur almost all the time. I will not blame Twitter because people can use 2FA like Aegis with their Twitter account. Another option is the use of security key. If these can be on Twitter to secure your account and people like Ethereum founder and other crypto well known people continue to remain careless for hackers to scam people using their account, I too will say they do not care about their followers.

An unfortunate accident. Vitalik Buterin is a famous public figure in the field of cryptocurrencies.
That's why it's no surprise to me that for how long the link was open, they were able to steal 700k USD already. It just saddens me that Twitter/X as a platform is no longer a safe space because everyone's trying to scam someone there, it's not worth to sift through the muck that we call a social platform, hopefully Vitalik's image won't be damaged as much because as much as we know that it's not his fault since his account got hacked, there's definitely a goofbrain out there that got scammed that will definitely blame Vitalik.

An unfortunate accident. Vitalik Buterin is a famous public figure in the field of cryptocurrencies. He co-founded Ethereum and has 4.9M Followers on his account on the X platform. The followers of the hacked Vitalik account have lost vast amounts of money and dozens of expensive NFTs like the CryptoPunk NFT collection. Sad about these immense losses for the victims, but this is a harsh lesson we learn from it that no one should open any malicious link on account of any famous and influential person if he finds a tweet for Giveaway or a mint of Free NFTs while seeing the comments button closed, also accounts like @ZachXBT on X platform who is a Blockchain investigator and those who constantly uncover scams and scammers' activities are the first to be followed up by us to remain vigilant in the event of any mysterious incidents.

Security browser extensions such as Blowfish, Stelo, Wallet Guard, Fire, Pocket Universe, and Revoke cash, would have most likely blocked the domain and/or detected the malicious contract.

Today, Vitalik's (ETHEREUM founder) account was hacked and the account posted an article with a mint NFT Phishing link. Soon after, the post was deleted but there is still no accurate information about whether Vitalik has gotten his account back or not. And there is also some information that more than 700 thousand USD was hacked when users clicked on the link.
