Mesh nets seem more worthy, maidsafe seems like some rehash of Tor, you can't really have a "free" medium on top of a medium controlled by some other entity.

Google and Facebook just bought drone companies, for atmospheric "interweb satellite" type use, from getting pissed off with the whole "If your customers which pay you the ISP for bandwidth which they may use any way they see fit, want also to be our customers and use bandwidth on that, why the hell should WE pay also" thing.

So I don't know if they will support a mesh type of environment with that or what.

Then also there's a internet space satellite project in the works for worldwide "free" internet, but it's looking like a one way data blast of popular sites only... but as a backup to the drone type and integrated well with a local "router on rooftop" mesh would work very well.

Yes, I'm familiar with the meshnet project and I find it interesintg. Although I'm not contributing to it, I'm following it. More info can be found on /r/darknetplan There is also one more project of this type based on blockchain but I can't find the link nor remember the name.

Theoretically some differences, but ... was this IPO just a rehashing of something someone was already doing?
