At 12,345 merits your dick becomes so smart it can use the search function!
I'm really torn as to whether I should give you a couple of merits for the above post.  It gave me a chuckle, and that's rare coming from a lower-ranked member (no offense, but it's true), but others might see it as frivolous merit-giving.

Ah, fuck it.  Since when did I ever care what the community at large thinks of my merit source duties?  True, I do take constructive criticism from members I respect quite seriously but I don't think they'd mind.  Consider the 2 merits I'm giving you to have come out of my personal stash in any case.

What's the significance?  Searching for that probably wouldn't give someone a clear answer, no matter how many threads showed up in the results.  There's really only one reason why it's important aside from bragging rights: you can earn more money through bounties/sig campaigns because you get more signature space.  If that weren't the case, rank would probably be less than 1/10th the issue it is and has been for years.  On other forums I've been involved with that have nothing to do with crypto, I've never seen posts talking about rank.  Ever.

Edit: I didn't read through all the posts before posting the above, and now that I read a few more I see the reason I gave was already written.  Consider my post to be confirming anyone who wrote the same--because it's true, sig campaigns are really the only reason merit is important.  I never read through the entirety of threads like this since I've probably seen at least a hundred of them in the past 5 years.

OP, the advantage of receiving merit will be for those who are able to figure it out on their own. By attracting more attention to yourself with questions, the answers to which are replete with each topic, you simply lose the opportunity to receive these merits. As you can see, this is very annoying, so press the buttons on your phone or computer more actively, and luck will not leave you.

Exactly!!... So annoying. ..and I keep asking, Don't these guys ever wanna quit?? Why I'm I feeling he's out here chasing clout? Cus if not, what's the purpose of asking a question he's already given an answer to? Was he expecting peeps to be saying the same thing differently? For him - is that a way to think outside the box?...
I'm just so tired of reading stuffs like this... honestly.

What are the advantages of earning merit? One of the advantages I know is that we can increase our rank by earning merit and activities.

The merits you earn can help you to rank up on forum and they also show that you're a good and contributing member of the forum. Even if you're new to this forum still you can earn merits if you contribute good information on forum. The merits aren't auto-given to you for your good posts but are given by the members of the forum. Some members who are known as merit sources get a certain amount of smerits per month.

Those members send you merits mostly because their job is to help and support all good posts that a member makes and other than merit sources each member gets a 1 sendable merit if he/she gets 2 merits from others. Like you have 2 merits which  philipma1957 sent you, now you're eligible to send 1 merit to any user you want and that's how merit system works.

The most proper advantage of merit is to rank up and the members who make effort to create posts will get merits. It means that anyone who contributes good and helpful information on this forum will get some merits for his/her contribution.

And, if someone has good number of merits then those members are known to be as good contributors. The campaign managers will often accept such members in their signature campaigns because the managers know that such members can write helpful posts that can help the advertisers that want to get exposure to their site from this forum.

In simple words merits are your lucky points that will help you to to have a good status on this forum if you follow the rules and don't do anything that's against the rules.

Trying to make friends in an anonymous surrounding should be your goal. Unless you understand how to be a friend with those who can give you merits, you won't make any difference.
Your statement is misleading, merits isn’t shared amongst friends and I hope newbies don’t take this the wrong way and start sending unsolicited pms to other members in an attempt to start a friendship. In my opinion, making friends should not be a priority here. You can make friends on Facebook. The primary purpose of bitcointalk is to discuss the technical and non technical aspects of bitcoin.

Oh, mine! I thought we've put to rest discussions centred on the usefulness of merit in this forum as all that is ubiquitous now. Sigh!
Merit and rank will forever be a continuous discussion as long as the merit system is in place and we have newbies coming into the forum. Eighty percent of the topics on Beginners & help would not exist if the OPs used the search engine to make their enquiry.

The primary purpose of introducing the Merit system by Theymos was to make the forum less spammy because when there was no Merit system, one could literally create an account, make a bunch of shit posts all around the forum and keep growing the rank and then sell the account and then create another one and repeat the process. Some even used to create and farm hundreds of accounts because there was no restriction on growing your rank as all it needed was for you to make at least a few posts every 14 days to qualify for the activity points which were the only requirement for ranking up before.

. Now I know one more reason: for getting paid more in signature campaigns.
This may be a reason for many members to obtain merit, but this is a misconception. Do not think that once you obtain merit and raise your rank, you will be accepted into signature campaigns immediately.

Acceptance in signature campaigns is primarily linked to the quality of posts. Campaign managers primarily select members who have high quality posts, in addition to other things as well.

Therefore, new members should think about writing high-quality posts and they will automatically receive merit.

Other than obvious purposes like ranking up, look at merits being like Facebook/Instagram/Twitter likes. The more likes(or merits in this case) you get, the more sort of 'authoritative' you are in the eyes of most. People will likely respect your opinions a lot more.

Trying to understand the benefits of getting should not be your priority. Trying to make friends in an anonymous surrounding should be your goal. Unless you understand how to be a friend with those who can give you merits, you won't make any difference.

Am I the only one interpreting this in another direction? This particular statement that I bold is misleading in my opinion. Some people might think that merit is just circulating among the circle of friends which is not true. You don't need to make any personal friend before you can earn merits here in this forum. Although some times one will begin to doubt if it is truth to make merit without having connection simply because they think they have put enough effort and merits is not coming. If that is the case, we have various thread where you can report your posts for review and get merit if they are worthy.

Some members when they see probably a merit source or a another member gives out merit more often to another user they think they are close or have some familiarity. Yes the familiarity might come from how the user getting the merits post and the other member gets attracted to his post and nothing of a friendship. There are many users that haven’t got interaction with one another and they have received the most merit from them.

The best way to get merit to me is by staying constant pushing to contribute to the forum. You can as well learn how to make them by reading posts of prominent members that get them frequently.

Now I know one more reason: for getting paid more in signature campaigns.

This also is not a reason why it is here. The only two genuine reason is to use it to separate ranks, aside the activity issue. With merit it means you achieved that rank with your contribution to the forum. The other one is to discourage spammers and low quality posters, once people do not get merit for there posts they get frustrated and that reduces the number of spammers.

What are the advantages of earning merit? One of the advantages I know is that we can increase our rank by earning merit and activities.
Other than getting your rank up, there are no meaning or purpose of the merit system, but many people here on btt judges you on the basis of merits (ranks) if you will have lower merit means lesser rank then they will might consider you newbie, but sometimes, you are not some newbie even though your rank is senior or full member but if you have 2k merits then you will be given the same respect as we gave to legendaries.

Just to point out, only few people keep track of to whom, five how much respect, not every member. Because if you are newbie and made mistake then you will be based by others but if you are legendary and made some mistake while writing the post, then you will be not bashed instead you will be corrected.

You might not like this, but it is what it is. And another feature of merit system is, if you have more merits w.r.t your activity then you will be preferred by many sig Compaign managers, as they will give you more priority but let me tell you, not every manager follow this rule. So, try not to go after ranks only, try to be genuine here and share your opinions and on the way, you will gain respect, with your shared opinions, and you will also gain ranks and merits too.

I am showing in these images that I searched about this first but there was no answer for this query, the results were all like this, what is merit, guide on merit, how to get merit, etc. but there is no subject of what are benefits of merits, why merits are important other than increasing rank. Now I know one more reason: for getting paid more in signature campaigns.

Op, you ask question and answer yourself again. Yes, the benefit of merit is that it allows you to rank up by contributing with helpful conversation in the forum.

First of all, it helps you rank up. There are different ranks in bitcointalk like newbie, junior, member, full member, senior, here and legendary. And based on your rank, you may get different benefits.

You have to understand what this merit system is and why it was implemented. The merit system helps reduce spam and shitty posts. It's not a 100% fool proof system, but it's still doing its work like a charm. If you compare before and after the merit system was introduced, you'll see a massive difference in post quality. Those who understand it's significant are trying so hard to earn merit and rank up.

Ranking up has its own benefits. You can join different bitcoin and altcoin signature campaigns that are happening in the forum. The payroll depends on your rank. Higher ranked members get massive payments weekly. If you were a legendary member, you may get 200-250 dollars worth of BTC on average per week. Sometimes it may vary, but I think you got what I tried to tell you.

You answered your own question that we earn merits for ranking up... and merits helps to keep this forum less spammed.

I think OP, you doesn't know about signature/bounty campaigns, here most people try to get merits so they can rank higher and can earn more in signature campaigns.
read more about signature campaign here you will get other information about signatures too: What are Signature Campaigns?

I feel without the merit system in place, people will not put effort to improve their level of engagement and contribution. In other words, here would have been filled with garbageposts. The merit system have eradicated all that as shitty post will not even get any attention.

If you observe the forum, you will notice that high ranking members post in a manner that you can actually see that they are experienced and deserve their ranks. They don't go about opening threads that lacks substance. Instead, they opening great threads and contribute to discussions meaningfully.

Finally, I think earning merits regularly is a sign that you are making meaning contribution to discussions in the forum.

Does this worth it?
Why can't you check or used the search option to know how often this same topics has been raised and why are you interested of knowing the advantage of merits. Besides you should know it's implemented to reduced spam and to increase quality post in the forum, so I don't there are any other thing than that except increasing in rank. So please lock this thread to avoid repeatedly posting same reply.

Besides activity, you need merit to increase your rank. You need 1 merit for being Jr. Member, 1000 merit for Legendary member.

You need to be at least Jr. Member to set signature and personal text.
Your posts are highlighted with "merited by" line.
You can join signature campaigns by having high number of merits.

In addition to activity, everyone now has a merit score, and you need both a certain activity level and a certain merit score in order to reach higher member ranks. The required scores are:

RankRequired activityRequired merit
Brand new00
Newbie10
Jr Member301
Member6010
Full Member120100
Sr. Member240250
Hero Member480500
LegendaryRandom in the range 775-10301000

You get merit points when someone sends you some for one of your posts. Additionally, when someone sends you merit points, half of those points can be sent by you to other people.

I'm hoping that this system will increase post quality by:
 - Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.
 - Highlighting good posts with the "Merited by" line.

Well op, you've literally answered your question, you need merits, if you want to rank up here on Bitcoin talk. here's a quote from Theymos why you need to earn merits
I'm hoping that this system will increase post quality by
 - Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.

People are trying to rank higher and get into campaign is what people nowadays see has its benefit. To rank higher, join a signature campaign and earn bitcoin.
I think if everyone is being realistic, the campaign is what is driving traffic into the forum daily, a lot of people probably got interested to joining Bitcointalk when they heard they can earn Bitcoins from signature campaigns
But then, the merit system has discouraged a lot of them, an probably they gave up before they even started.
