You already have HW you can mine with when you're not gaming. Use it before you think about buying mining HW.

Well yes, I am a bit clueless. That's why I started the post in the first place lol. Mining wouldn't be as popular as it is if it wasn't profitable. It was more of a question of how much of an investment it would take to get there. I am also interested in trading coins for profit, but it would take even more research to study the market than it would take to start generating coins. Money is tight, so i was hoping to do something that can get me some financial wiggle room so i can afford to play around with the market or investment strategies.

Does anyone have a rough estimate of how many ether (or any other altcoin really) that i could mine in a week and/or month with a single x380?

if you really want to mine you need to think infinite term not even long term, this with gpu, another coin will emerge one day that will take the ethereum place, maybe zerocash, just wait for the next hype

I agree with that. I don't think so either that GPU mining will completely die once mining of ether becomes useless. Some other coin would definitely replace it, maybe not immediately but definitely.

You're going to get wrecked if you buy GPUs. Possibly the worst investment you could ever make ATM.

You seem pretty clueless, spend some time researching and watching ETH crash and burn. You are always better off buying coins than hardware.

Or you can wait until the nubs start going bankrupt because they can't pay for their farms and scoop up some cheap gear.

Wrong, ethereum won't crash this easily. See the last 24 hours graph, the value has increased by like 10%. These ups and downs are pretty usual in crypto-currencies.

Its very harsh saying its the worst investment. I mean any ASIC would be way worse IMHO. GPU's can be sold if need be for 60-80 percent of what they were bought for. I am happy about my purchase and would recommend the 380x aswell. It really doesnt matter what brand r9 380x either. I have three different kind and all hash the same with proper settings and -100 undervolt. Im getting a very stable 21.5 and I have 42 380x cards. Looking back on the history of crypto there has been a profitable coin at any given period. Yes there has been many ups and downs as well but if you want to try mining then I would say go for it. I took a huge risk with my rigs and hope ETH holds out long enough to get them paid for. Just remember YOLO!!

Ethereum is probably the best altcoin to mine right now with GPU. You've fine specs computer system and you'll only need a good graphics card to get started with. AMD cards are generally more better than nVidia for ether mining, with a few exceptions. I'd recommend R9 280X or you may wait for R9 470, as I'm guessing that it'd be definitely worth it. What's your budget for the GPU BTW?

What's the price of unit/kWh at your side? It needs to be less than like 25 cents.

The US average is around .12 i think. I'm not the one who pays for the electricity where i live, but i believe it's .09. And i'll be moving soon, so that is subject to change. I'm a bit poor atm, but if the card will pay for itself before long and generate income, then the start up cost isn't too much of a problem. At least for my first experiment i'd want to stay under $400. If everything goes well, i can always reinvest my earnings.

Well the unit cost is pretty good, you can make some good profit. Ether value is pretty down right now, but I'm sure that it'd be back up soon. $400 for a single card is a good budget, you may also start with 2 R9 280x cards.

I'm looking to get into cryptocurrency mining. Is Ethereum the most profitable coin to mine right now? And what sort of hardware would i need to start mining? Thanks for any helpful info you can provide.

I have some old gaming hardware lying around, so i would most likely only need to get a gpu to just get started. I'll have a spare gtx 670 (2gb) lying around after i upgrade to the new gtx 1070, but i've heard somewhere that amd cards are better for this sort of thing. I don't mind spending the cash for a decent card, as long as i'll see a ROI.

Spare hardware includes an 800watt psu, 4gb, amd phenom x4 cpu w/ motherboard, and a plethora of hard drives in various sizes. also have various cases and a milk crate for DIY, so that's not a problem either.
