I've always loved my classical guitar more than my electric and one of my personal favorite guitarists when it comes to technique and 'clean' precision is Julian Bream. You will not find the same type of creativity that characterizes guys like Hendrix, in his play, this is classical music after all. The guy is absolutely amazing, his dedication to his art is legendary and it shows every time he plays  Smiley
For those of you who haven't heard of him give this a listen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rzzKztnenQ
Enjoy  Wink

When I lived in B.C., I had a roommate that would play stuff like this all the time.  Smiley

Steve Vai
He is probably the best guitarist if we are thinking about music based around guitar

I agree, Steve Vai is one of the best in the world in terms of sheer ability.  He makes his guitar sing.

Slash is good but will not nor ever will be the best.
To be the best, requires more diverse playing style to me. Or someone who inspired a shit load of guitarists.
ie; Django, Leadbelly
Dave Murray is better than Slash imnsho. I still wouldn't say hes the best though.
Look at Tony Iommi, lost his finger tips, was inspired by Django and he taught himself how to play without some fingertips.
Eddie Van Halen is better than Slash.
I don't know who I can call the best. A lot of good guitarist are the best at what they do.

It's also a term that speaks more to objectivity than subjectivity

Hey Smiley Actually you'd be hard put to find a term more subjective than 'complex/complexity'. Organic chemistry might appear complex to a 10 year old/layperson but could very well be simplicity itself to one who has devoted his/her entire life to the study something he/she truly loves. Someone who doesn't care about paintings could dismiss an original Van Gogh as a simple thing with colors while some else could spend hours marveling at the complexity of it. Similarly what you hear when you listen to a piece of music and what I hear can be worlds apart.

Secondly, my comment is constructed in such a way as to give the reader a feeling of contrast. I immediately follow my view of complexity with one of simplicity.

[This bit is not part of my response to your comment - Objectivity cannot really exist, if it does, it is a personal thing. The 'facts' that objectivity relies on are themselves subjective albeit on a deeper level. This ties in with what I said about infinities before.]

Jimi Hendrix of course
Hendrix  was incredibly original. He was a pioneer with respect to so many aspects of guitar playing,  Just think about how it would be if he were still alive.

Hendrix was amazing.. I like Vai, Joe Sat, John Petrucci as well.. Tom morello n the edge for their effects.
Hendrix was not that good. His technique is really lacking compared to some really good guitarists like Joe Satriani, David Gilmour or Slash he was nothing special at all.

As a guitarist myself (although I've sold my electric and haven't touched my Nylon in years Roll Eyes ), I'd say both Slash and Jimi when it comes to complexity. For simple catchy tunes, with simple chords, I've found no one as powerful as Kurt Cobain. The guy was no guitar genius by any stretch but somehow finding powerful combinations was natural for him.

As a guitarist myself, the emboldened passage perplexes me.  Complexity?  Slash and Jimi?  Really?  Both undeniably exude loads of feel and soul, but 'complex' is probably one of the last words I would ever think of to describe their playing.  It's also a term that speaks more to objectivity than subjectivity, which is probably the reason I'm responding to this post and not to the posts of those who like Carlos Santana (his guitar playing to me sounds like nails on a chalkboard; he hits all the notes I wish he wouldn't hit lol).

Although My heart says Albert King, cause he played a right strung guitar
left handed and inspired most of the guitarist that are on this list, I'll say:

Django Reinhardt
