it seems the RX470 4GB cards should also be capable of 700+h/s when properly modded. way cheaper those. but also less resell value

Ive seen some sales on a few RX480 cards in the last week or so.
You may be able to find a good deal and go that route.

(That was in the United States tho. Not sure what kind of prices are like for hardware in the UK right now.)

The benchmark site helped a lot, thanks!

I had a look at the opteron solution, it sounds promising but the boards are difficult to find and get extremely expensive, i think the graphics cards do make for the best solution and are easier to resell later if need be!

I am in the UK but with much bargaining and hunting for power companies i ended up with my power company (sainsburys energy) if i do the math of peak/offpeak prices i average out at 7 pence per kWh. My rate is locked in for two years as well, i would be amazed if i could find such a deal again...

7 pence sounds good enough for me, it's a third of what we pay here in germany!  Shocked

For CPU mining you don't need massive amounts of cores. You need massive amounts of L2 cache. 2MB for each thread.

I see two ways:

1) RX480 builds - low energy cost and high resale value

a modded RX480 produces 775H/s for ~250€

2) A big pile of used Opteron 6276. Big 16MB L2 cache for cheap

They cost 25-50€ a pop on ebay and hash away with ~400-450H/s. You have to find a lot of server mainboards to run them in though, which can get costly.

I know a guy running a full HP c7000 chassis with 16x2 of these opterons, pushing ~ 16kH @6kW. You have to have really cheap power though to make profit from such a setup. The RX480 use about half the power...

With your budget, I'd build a 5x or 6x RX480 rig.

This site http://monerobechmarks.byethost5.com/ has benchmarks of various GPUs and CPUs and their TDP. Under "Tools" you find a mining calculator. Cheers!

I am looking at mining monero as a hobby as I love to build extreme systems but I am looking to get the highest hashrate possible for the lowest priced hardware possible. I have a budget of around £1500, I am not too concerned about electricity costs or even to profit exactly, this is just an experiment I will do for a year. I was leaning towards Xeon CPUs, unless there are any other ideas!

With £1500 if I am frugal, is it possible to get 4kH/s or more? Also what is the best software? I have not considered many altcoins, but I like monero. I own a few coins. As we are in the winter months, it can double up as heating...

It is a system I can probably  build very soon once I have the information on it. What gives the best hashrate 'bang for buck' if you will? As there seems to be quite a few more variables with cryptonight which affect hashrate. I am debating one of the 12 core 24 thread Xeons but again, I am looking for the best hashrate / value for money, and the hardware is expensive and there is limited data to test what is worth the money or not.
