hmmm Im thinking about putting one on a external hard drive, will be my first time, has anyone done it yet?

Yeah, just download the ISO for the distro, plug in the hard drive and use this software to make it bootable.

Debain and Slackware are the stable ones and being maintained by a few people, while 'big' distros like Ubuntu are maintained by people, whom real identities you'll probably never know.
You can download them right from the official sites above.
Debian has an packet manager which makes it easier to keep your distro updated and safe from harm.
Slackware developers is a team of skilled hackers who choose very solid software versions to put in a distro releases, slackware can be safe until the next release without updating.
It's from my personal experience.

Right, you want to go with Debian or Slackware. Slackware is one of the oldest Linux distributions, the package management system is a bit tricky.

Do you want the liveCD on USB to have persistent storage (to save and use your wallet over time) or just one time use to create the keys and address for an offline paper wallet?

Couple of questions by a Linux beginner:

What linux distro do you recommend to use as live cd for cold storage and why?
Any trusted sites where I can download it?
