The best time for selling bitcoins is always going to be the all time high, and no one can discuss that.

I have always been selling some part of my bitcoins every time that we have a new all time high.

The last time that i sold was at $20k.

During these times on 2015, I steadfastly believed that the price will never gonna touch $1000, let alone $700 again due to the fact that the entire year of 2014-2015 has been nothing but bearish signals and dead cat bounces. Right now, I made sure that $20000 would be my sell limit and would forget about crypto by then knowing that I've made quite a fortune by just trading and doing nothing else for the past year. I'm sure it will be one heck of a ride in 2018 but I'm out and I call it, but that's just me.

Hello,
I am hodling Bitcoins since 2012, expecting them to go up in value.

What do you think is the best time to cash out? Is it now or will Bitcoin rise again to make more money??

I think the best time to sell or dilute bitcoin is when it's high, but I advise not to sell or dilute all the bitcoin you have. Better bit, because when bitcoin will rise again and higher you can sell back.

Better to hold bitcoin and buy more instead of selling on panic, bitcoin is a great technology it will bounce back. Analyze the market well, and you will see that this dump is temporary only, always look for long term and you will see big return.

I never sold as much as Bitcoin I sold this month. Bitcoin has shown that it will not exceed $ 20,000, so it makes no sense for me to try to create an extreme expectation of Bitcoin. For this reason, every commodity has a price, creating excessive expectations harms the reputation of that commodity.

Indeed, don't spend all of your bitcoin in one shot because I am sure that it will grow more that before. If you need that money just spend a little amount because converting all of your coins into fiat will be a bad idea. It is better to hold your coin because soon it will become enormous and you will get a high profit.

It will rise again. I heard that bitcoin will rise up to $30k, so wait for it if you want to encash it early. I think it is near because as of now we already encounter $16700 bitcoin price and when the big investors will come for us it will rise again.

That was amazing! Holding bitcoin for a long time. The price of it now would really makes a big difference.  You must have a reliable and big reason why you have to cash it out.  If you are really not in need, hold it as much as possible. Just follow the golden rule.

This thread was back in 2015, now that bitcoin value is $15,000. What do you think is the best time to cash out bitcoins?  And will it still go higher a few years from now?

The best time to cash out would be when you urgently need funds and the current price is at its peak. Do not cash out when you just feel like cashing out. It is best to hold your coins as much as possible since the price is still perceived to increase over time. Sell when the price is high and buy when the price is low, that's the golden rule Wink

I would say that the right time to sell is different for every user, there is no "general right time".'
It depends on many factors, like at what price has one bought Bitcoin or earned it, what are your plans and trading or saving goals, do you need money etc. So basicly everyone should make the decision on its' own but if you ask me the Bitcoin price has many room for further growth so there is no reason for selling unless you need/want to.

because he not want to take more risk, this is different a believer bitcoin and trader bitcoin

I saw a good quote this morning, something the "holders" on here should hear:

"You can't buy low if you dont sell high."

Not saying now is the time to sell, but I'm not sure were at the "low" point yet

Or you could avoid daytrading, use bitcoin for its value it provides yourself and keep investing in a project you believe in and thus insuring a greater chance your savings will be successful.

You really never need to sell high ... ever.

The best time to cash out=switch out of bitcoins would be when a new better idea comes along and takes hold without totally overcoming bitcoin yet.
In any other foreseeable situation it is better to keep bitcoins as a separate asset class: stocks, bonds, real estate, cash, gold and now bitcoin.

Your best sell in 1000$ in last year Smiley
This future higher rate (in this year) my opinion 400$
I don't see this happening.
For $400, which would be about a doubling, roughly $3 billion in real capital would need to be invested until years end, $500 million a month.

Sorry, I don't see this happen.

Are you thinking that for every $1 increase in market cap, somebody needs to invest $1? That's not how it works. The total bitcoin market cap at the peak at end of 2013 was nearly 14 billion dollars; that doesn't mean that 14 billion dollars got invested into bitcoin trading.

Consider this thought experiment. Suppose I made an alt-coin with 10 billion premined coins. I sell one coin to you for one dollar. The market cap is now calculated to be 10 billion dollars. Did it take 10 billion dollars to get it there? No.

In the real world, bitcoin is not so thinly traded as in my thought experiment. But the principle holds: it does not take X dollars of investment to increase the market cap by X dollars.

If the op's understanding of how markets work is so flawed how has he supposedly become a millionaire? I call troll.

Some people seem that want everything. They want the instant gratification and convince themselves Bitcoin is dead, but in the back of their minds they know they are making a stupid move by cashing out all of their Bitcoins because anyone with half a brain knows BTC will be worth 10.000+ in the next 10 years.

Just to be clear I'm not saying I would cash out now. I'm accumulating at these prices !  Grin

But in the specific case of KingAfurah who clearly doesn't believe bitcoin has a future why hold longer if you don't believe in your investment. He wants to buy Apple shares  Roll Eyes

You just describe about 99% of the people.

To them like myself, we cash out based on whats the value right now, yeah we belittle ourself with hindsight, but its hard to tell whats the future when so many btc companies like BFL started great creating the community even better, then fails?

Stuff like that is so discouraging to see.

When the best time comes, it will be better to just spend it when you need, and not exchange for fiat. Many people can't afford to wait, so if you really have to
i guess any time will do you good, since you claim to have bought them @ 10$. Halving is coming next year, so if you can hold a while longer, it should, and probably would be much

If you are an investor, you have to decide whether you believe in the long term viability of bitcoin. If yes (like me), hold for the long term (many years) and don't lose faith when the price tanks. If not, go ahead and sell. Simple as that.

If you are a trader, you should consult your tea leaves, and then buy and sell at random. On second thought, just sell, because it's the opposite of what the hodl'ers are doing and they are soooooooo financially unsophisticated, it will feel good to prove them wrong  Roll Eyes

I personally think that bitcoin has a greater chance of succeeding in the long term than failing. One way to gauge the fundamentals is to look at the quality of people (and institutions) who are betting their time, energy, careers and reputations on the blockchain -- people like Blythe Masters, the former head of global commodities at JP Morgan Chase & Co, just to name one http://www.coindesk.com/former-jp-morgan-exec-blythe-masters-swaps-wall-street-for-bitcoin/ . I bought a small amount of bitcoin in 2011 at around $10 and would not have done so if I had not read that Gavin, a Princeton educated computer scientist who (I presumed) had multiple career paths available to him, chose to bet his career on bitcoin.

If the OP really did buy in 2011 at $10, meaning that he hodl'd through a price drop to below $2 -- and a gap of something like 2 years before setting a new ATH -- without selling,  I am puzzled why he would be losing faith now, unless he just really needs the money, which he says he does not. Or maybe he (like me) bought such a small amount in 2011 that he just plumb forgot about it until 2013  Undecided

Yeah 3 years is a long time in the bitcoin world but I was thinking more along the lines of 5 to 10 years. It's still in its infancy and there's still lots of work to be done with infrastructure including making it easier to (securely) use for the average guy on the street.

There are a lot of hoarders admittedly but I still try to spend bitcoin when I can (not too much though Wink)

I don't think it is in it's infancy anymore. It is already 6 years old, in digital age, that is adult.
I am getting the impression that it will remain somewhat fringe to the general public and be used for buying drugs / black market stuff and hodling hoping to win the lottery, which will do nothing to drive up the price.

and why you're still holding then? if this is really what you think you should dump now without any esitation, but apparently you're still honding, so you actually believe in the possibility of the price increase again

It's better to sell your bitcoin now if you don't believe bitcoin price will rise again or don't want take the risk.
If i were you, i would hold my bitcoin until bitcoin price rise again
Yes, it is simple. Why do we sell it when it is cheap?

because of fud, and general panic, we think that it will decrease even further

now that you have waited this long, you have to keep waiting. because many people believe that this is the low price for bitcoin and things will start to get better and price will rise again,

i agree. best thing is to wait. but for a lot people waiting/holding isn't easy. especially if they missed a great cashout opportunity.
that is why you have to make up your mind and do your researches and thinkings before investing your money in anything.
this means that you have to decide whether you want to invest long term or short term and do trading for profit. and specially decide when to buy and when to sell. and not just wait for miracles.

If you were going to sell, a while ago when they were up to around the 1k mark would have been the ideal time, seeing as you have held on for this long it would be a shame to sell now and regret it.  It is still early days regarding mass awareness of bitcoin, it will at some point reach more people and the effect this will have on price is purely speculation, buying bitcoin in the first place was a risk so why not hold tight and see what it brings.

....., the price can only go up eventually.

Disclaimer: long term hodler.
That I am not so sure of. It can go down real quick also, I remember gold digger year 2013. We have not seen real stress test of spamming of the Bockchain (which is relatively cheap for around $5000 a day in useless transactions, cheap for a country like Russia, USA or China). Also use as money is still not there, since everybody is hodling hoping to get rich quick like a lottery.

Does 3 years make me long term holder?

You have already held for three years! I assume you believe the price will climb up further beyond the peak in 2013! If you are not short of cash, why do you rush to cash out them? Why not hold a bit longer to see the potential of it? I think you bought then at very cheap price, you won't lose anything!

I used to belive it will climb higher again, but now, 18 months after peak, I am slowly losing confidence of this ever happening. I am more realist, not so hardcore "believer" like many in this forums. Wink

I am not rushing to cash out, I am thinking about it. Maybe the money is better invested somewhere else, like Apple shares, USA private prison company or something other lucrative market.

I will not lose anything even if I sell now, since I bought for about $10 only 3 years ago, ~2300% ROI in 3 years.

Also use as money is still not there, since everybody is hodling hoping to get rich quick like a lottery.

Does 3 years make me long term holder?

not right now for sure, don't sell low and buy high like many do, the best time to sell is everybody else start buy, but not immediately after that, wait a bit before selling

surelly i would not touch anything until it go at least above 1k, again...
Well, I bought in 2012 when Bitcoin was around $10, so if I'd sell now I would have 2300% ROI in 3 years, which is fabulous.

With your last sentence I am not so sure, I am losing believe in seeing $1000 ever again. I have not decided yet, holding or diversifying. Maybe selling half my Bitcoin assets and investing other half into something else.

it would have been more fabulous if you had sold when the price touched 1200-1300, selling now seems a bit stupid no matter the roi you can ever get

i believe that if you had already lost that much by not selling at that peak, you can afford to gamble a bit more with it and wait for a better price

Well if you can afford to keep them, I'd personally wait a least another couple more years before thinking of cashing out your btc. Even then I wouldn't sell them all, the way I see it is unless there is some unforeseen disaster, the price can only go up eventually.

Disclaimer: long term hodler.

Bitcoin and co.
Hello,
I am hodling Bitcoins since 2012, expecting them to go up in value.

What do you think is the best time to cash out? Is it now or will Bitcoin rise again to make more money??

Best wishes

You've already held it for 3years, if we were you, we would hold it for 3 more years.
I know, people said the same a year ago. "Just wait, Bitcoin will rise again, fundamentals are good".

I am not in it for waiting, maybe another investment would be a better option, i.e. real estate or Apple shares or something.

Do what you think is right for your money. But if I were you, I'd sell them out and start a good business. Buying apple shares would be awesome!

By selling Bitcoin, you ALWAYS lose money in the mega long term (10 to 20 years from now), including potential chances to become a millionaire.
This doesn't make any sense.
That's like saying by not gambling or by not buying lottery tickets you "you ALWAYS lose money in the mega long term (10 to 20 years from now), including potential chances to become a millionaire."

I am already millionaire, so I can live very well already. I am just looking for maximizing my investments, and I am losing patience in Bitcoin slowly.

Knowing this objective fact, you can always try to benefit on the big bubbles that will happen along the way. Every time you sell is a risk tho.
So I would say, if you are here long term, don't sell. If you don't care, just sell as long as we hit 600 and enjoy your beer money.

If you've been hodling since 2012 then you probably should have cashed out at the ATH but hindsight is a wonderful thing, you wouldn't have known about or expected the drop we've experienced since.
I would advise you to hodl for quite a while yet, the current price sucks & it makes no sense at all to sell now.
The price will probably double within 12 months due to a number of things - Gemini, COIN ETC, halving etc so do not sell now as imo it'd be a big mistake.

There's still room for profit with BTC and I'm sure there will be some successfull alt coins as well.
I'm now trying to figure out which are worth investing in

It's better to sell your bitcoin now if you don't believe bitcoin price will rise again or don't want take the risk.
If i were you, i would hold my bitcoin until bitcoin price rise again
I don't know man, it is 18 months now since it was $1000, nowhere near the peak.

I am losing patience, I don't think we will see good prices again, maybe a better idea to sell now and invest in Apple shares or something.
I you own Bitcoins since 2012 why didn't you sell your coins during that huge bitcoin price spike in late 2013? Did you think that price would be even higher?
Anyway, I your best bet right now is to wait for the next bitcoin halving in 2016. Bitcoin price would skyrocket.

The price of Bitcoin might have reached its peak for the time being.

We need to wait and see if these "military" checkpoints will become necessary to force people onto the "right" chain (Bitcoin XT).
