Why not send your wallet.dat file to another computer and make sure that everything is working before deleting from your existing one.

Note: if you are using email or dropbox please rename your wallet.dat file.

Unless you really love your current addresses, I guess it is safer and easier to send your coins to your newly generated wallet on your new computer.

Create paper wallet offline and transfer coins to it.
After upgrade unload paper wallet to your new rig.

Safest way Smiley

Hello folks.

Total newbie question here (though I guess that's what this forum is for).

I'm switching linux distros and as such will be re-installing the bitcoin client on my new distro.

Is the best way to import my wallet to the new client from a backup on blockhain.info, or just backup the .dat file on dropbox (or something more secure) and just import it that way?

Thanks.

Backup your wallet.bat files many times and before you save it to your USB or by email. Please remember to change the file name. Wallet.bat is the main target for hackers and trojans.

Backup the .dat file in a 'secure as possible' environment.
