Topic: Better clarifications on the "Activity" function for brand new members (Read 230 times)

legendary
Activity: 2324
Merit: 1604
hmph..
Simple way to give an explanation is:

1. Activity point from posts and time he/she spent. every two weeks member will get 14 activity point (if he make a posts and active in this forum)
2. Merits = rewards for their posts contribution or anything else that member thing if that posts deserve to get merits.

More detail about activity has been shared by theymos:
The activity number is determined in this way:
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
activity = min(time * 14, posts)

Rough summary of what this means: If you post once per day on average, then you will eventually get the maximum number of activity points that you can get. Posting more than once per day on average is useless for increasing activity. The maximum number of activity points you can get is 1 per day, but your activity score only updates every two weeks. Therefore, it will take about 100 days to get 100 activity if you post once per day on average.

Activity is updated every hour.

The new membergroup limits work like this: (Edit: Obsolete, do not use)
GroupRequirement
Brand New0 posts
Newbie(none)
Jr. Memberactivity: 30
Memberactivity: 60
Full Memberactivity: 120
Sr. Memberactivity: 240
Hero Memberactivity: 480
Legendaryoccurs randomly between 775 and 1030 activity

If Brand new member read sticky thread on Meta about forum ranks and Activity & new membergroup limits, it will more easy to understand.

These are the kind of active users I didn't state in my posts because they have no lapses. I am illustrating things to brand new users that seem not to understand how activity works that is why i made those examples and didn't bother to know why and how they managed to be in that situation. I hope they will understand after going through the article than being misinformed.
Well, you should have searched why they got into that situation before including them in your post. Joining bounty campaigns wouldn't help them earn merits instead their activity points would only increase per 2 weeks.. If a forum user posted good quality posts ir threads even if joining a campaign would surely earn merits. It is the reason why theymos implemented the merit system because of bounty spammer.

I disagree with you, I still saw many users with high activity is still spamming, cheating, etc in this forum. (it means high activity still doesn't know rules)

Okay saw your emphasis they are all accurate, but an active users that has a different purpose of spamming the forum will learn faster still.

Don't forget about this user, they have excellent contributions in this forum. All of them is Sr.Member, but they qualified become Legendary (zasad@ still 907 merits, but I think he will get 93 merits soon)

These users have been active for more than A year in this forum but channeled their activities differently maybe they didn't help other users to get merits (not sure) or their activity on this forum isn't interesting for other users to learn,

I think we should sincere if we want to help other user, not just because there are a reward (merit) you will get. Most of your list above is only bounty spammer, it's why they didn't get merit. The best way to get merit IMO, is forget about merit and start your contribution in this forum.

Advantages of Activity over Merit

Active users tend to learn faster and know much about the forum
Active users are chosen in campaigns
Active users are strong enough to participate in what they signed up for like, posting threads, commenting, etc

I disagree with you, I still saw many users with high activity is still spamming, cheating, etc in this forum. (it means high activity still doesn't know rules)
An active users doesn't mean he will get accepted if he apply in a campaigns. Usually many campaign have this requirements

minimum of 5 merits in the last 120 days period can apply.
Even if he always active and posting... but he doesn't get a minimum of 5 merit, he can't join any single campaign (except bounty)

If Rank is of any relevance to the reader, note that Activity and Merit are not disassociated, but rather co-requisits, being the former easy to achieve, and the latter a bit harder. As such, there is no real advantage to one over the other (save for the fact that, given the conceptual choice, it is better to obtain Merits than Activity, since Activity is easier to increase).

Rank, Activity, boards where one is active, posting style, and sometimes Merits are also pondered when selecting people for campaigns. Again, all interrelated (at least for good campaign managers). Activity on it’s own is not a great measure without the rest.

Regarding the first three listed profiles:

nicecrypto received 10 Merits in the initial airdrop, and has earned 5 Merits since the system kicked-off. There’s nothing particularly wrong with the profile. He does post in mostly in Altcoin Discussion, and Bitcoin Discussion, which is fine, being those boards not easy to earn merits on.

Leonardo7 received 0 Merits in the initial airdrop, and has earned 13 Merits since. There’s nothing particularly wrong with the profile either. He does post in mostly in Altcoin Discussion, Bitcoin Discussion, and Economics.

sayma83 received 0 Merits in the initial airdrop, and has earned 11 Merits since. He’s not really very active outside bounties, so Merits are difficult to come across.

They may or may not be interested in Merits and Rank.

The other three profiles are "young", and we’ll see how they evolve.

Greetings to our brand new members they are lots of topics in this section about what I'm writing about but. I made this article very clear for you to understand in a way that you will see the differences between users and their activities in this forum,

How ranks work with activity

Check this link it states the rank and how it corresponds with activity and merits. https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/comprehensive-guide-to-bitcointalk-newbie-friendly-calculator-and-infographic-2534500

Just like in real life "not every soldier is a hero and not all heroes are considered soldiers" This quote will help you understand my Examples below,

Lists of  Users with high activities but low ranked.

Username: Nicecrypto
Activity: 882
Merit: 15
Position: Member

If you checked the link above you will see that this user is qualified to be a Legendary member from his activity in this forum, But his merits number is lower than required to have that rank,

Username: Leonardo7
Activity: 560
Merit: 13
position: member

From what we have here this user, is qualified to be a Hero member from his activity in this forum, But his merits number is lower than required to have that rank,

Username: sayma83
Activity: 252
Merit: 11
Position: Member

His activity on this forum would have gotten him to the Senior member rank but has barely 11 merits which qualify him to be a member-only,

They are plenty of soldiers like these users above but are not considered heroes. It could be a result of how they focused on their activities, how many lives they saved etc.

These users have been active for more than A year in this forum but channeled their activities differently maybe they didn't help other users to get merits (not sure) or their activity on this forum isn't interesting for other users to learn,

Lists of usernames with high Merits but low ranked

Wenbing
Activity: 56
Merit: 15
Position: Junior Member

Wenbing has several merits that qualify him to be a member of this forum. He has a lesser activity that will get him to become a member,

Lucifer_8
Activity: 19
Merit: 24
Position: Newbie

The above user is a newbie but his merit can qualify him to become a member instead his activity is lower than required,

seabits
Activity: 42
Merit: 14
position: Junior member

These users possibly are considered heroes that are not soldiers because they know how to get merit regardless of their activity in the forum.

For instance, A person with good information about cryptocurrency registered into this forum as a brand new member doesn't mean he/she is a newbie to bitcoin because he is new in the forum.

Advantages of Activity over Merit

Active users tend to learn faster and know much about the forum

Active users are chosen in campaigns

Active users are strong enough to participate in what they signed up for like, posting threads, commenting, etc

Advantages of Merit over Activity

Most newbie accounts with plenty of merits are owned by top-ranked members

They rank faster if they work harder than a user with high activity and lesser merits

They are considered intelligent

To round up, You signed up into this forum to be active, working to see that your place of learning is in good shape. So make it a duty to make yourself seen by other users. Your activity depends on you and the administrators while merits are given by other users to you for a job well done.

Thanks
