Cockfighting is a gambling not only in that country(Philippines) but even in Europe and many countries in Asia and Even in Latin America .

Meaning this is a popular kind of gambling in which Philippines find a best way to extend the gaming in Online.

I'm sure that even how many legislator will oppose on this yet there are much more to favor because this is not an Illegal gambling .
Maybe right now, cockfighting has become a popular gambling game in other countries, especially when the internet can help the gambling provider to expand their business using the internet. That games start as traditional gambling games in Asia, especially the Philippines and other Asia countries.

The regulator needs to have strict rules to protect the young people joining because young people are susceptible to becoming addicted. Maybe people above 20 years or so can bet on cockfighting but not for people below 20 years.

It is not a question whether it is popular or not because we all know that this game has been with us many centuries ago. It's a question on how it affected society in general specially in the country. The government initially try to fight illegal drugs and then illegal gambling and yet they allowed some big shot just Atong Ang to proliferate this online sabong in the last year because of the pandemic? I think the government really have to look at it as many families are being destroyed because individuals are losing big money in this sports.

I think there is a bigger personality behind Atong Ang. I see him as just a pawn in this gambling network in the Philippines. Remember that his name has been crapping up even during the Estrada administration and up to know he is still on the (illegal) gambling business. So for me, there is a someone that is strong backing up Atong Ang so it is hard to stop this new pandemic in the pandemic in the Philippines even though Cayetano is trying to fight it out.

true. some of these bigger personalities ruled a huge region in the country and even the country itself like Joseph Estrada. Chavit Singson and Manny Pacquaio is known for sabong too. Cayetano is really not prepared for this bigger fight since he isn't backed and the would-be president Marcos is a good friend of Singson's.

the article is also saying the adoption of online wallets, does anyone think crypto will be adopted soon?

That is what I'm trying to say, this kind of online games, they are several politicians that are benefiting from it not just Atong Ang.

So if Cayetano has a clear and good intention, but if there will be politicians going to talk him out, then mostly likely nothing will happen to it and maybe this is just a political gimmick on Cayetano's end.

[Nope]No hype delivers more than hope
Cockfighting is indeed more favored by traditional gamblers and considers it a tradition, when in fact it is not. This also happens in my area, where people with low incomes who do not even support their daily needs often bet on cockfighting arenas just to seek luck.

But as far as I know, there is no gambling site that mediates cockfighting hobbyists to bet online in my country.

I am a fan of cockfighting. I enjoy this new online cockfighting. I was able to withdraw a number of times although I am still losing big. But I am attracted to this kind of gambling.

However, I also support 100% if this is completely abolished. This has indeed grown into the level of a pandemic in this country. This is slowly eating away the very foundations of individual and family values. I have seen first hand how a local policeman is losing big and becomes irritable, family broken, very young daughter left with separated parents, properties sold, savings exhausted, and so on because of this kind of gambling.

I like this online cockfighting but I've also seen how this is destroying lives. This is better stopped.

Just like what some other users have said that the bill won't progress as there are too many politicians who are into this business but IMO Cayetano have a point but he should have known that this business has been in the Philippines for a long time though not online but still it affects many Filipino lives.

The only bad thing about this online sabong is that ordinary people can gamble any time of the day wherever they may be, too convenient for them to push the bet button.

I assume based on my comprehension on OP's thread that the said problem arises or become more visible to a law maker because of the pandemic where even in the state of scarcity the citizen still manage to bet on an online gambling site and worst thing is that it ruined many lives as it also said that many have been indebted. But seems that the bill won't progress if there are many politicians that are also into this business, this would be a big conflict on the implementation of the law. I think the law maker must focused on age requirements of those who can legally involved in this kind of activities even if it is online or in-person because I think it is more alarming knowing that there might be those minors that can easily access the site.

betting online cockfight has become the new pandemic
This is really interesting, where in fact this cockfighting is one of the traditional bets that is always in the area around me. And they had to do it in secret. Not so much as the cockfighting event was finally dispersed by the police and they were arrested. Yes, gambling is prohibited in my country. But the gambling of cockfighting is like never ending. Likewise with various other gambling.
especially now that there are so many online gambling that can be done so that it will be safer and there is no need to worry anymore about being chased by the officers.

government is also earning from these betting firms which is why its becoming a usual to approve bills.
should the government risk the teens today knowing that cockfighting arenas can routinely operate everyday online?

The government needs money in this pandemic the economy is still down because of the lockdown and this kind of gambling and the taxes and revenues it generated helped the government to sustain the needs of the government to provide basic service I don't think they will limit, gambling is legal in the Philippines and they can only warn people from the harmful effects of gambling and it's citizen are known to engage to a lot of gambling legal and illegal.
Those only for legalized gambling activities but for those illegal then taxes couldnt really be possible and this is a never ending kind of hunt because even on a country which do allows gambling legally there would be still platforms or places which whom decide to run it illegally because they dont like to pay up taxes and how much more into those who prohibits out?
Also as part of culture then this is something hardly cant be stopped no matter what government would do so because they cant monitor out 24/7.

There's advantage of approving the bill as the government can get cut from it.
But this may encourage gamblers to play without limits. But it is their money anyway.
So in short, it is still depends on the gambler himself how he will control his betting activities.
But maybe the lawmaker just want to prevent small time bettors to be addicted with this gambling game.

^ The problem is here, they must filter their clients, cockfighting online is good but if there is a minor age which is not good.
Besides their country will benefit from it through collecting tax and I think there is a reason their government will stop it. The cause of the proposal could be due to the near election, just to have propaganda on the platform but the fact, even on itself won't be able can stop on this kind of betting game.
However, this has been a tradition of their country and even their government banned it people will always looking find a way just to escape.

Losing a fortune in the cockfighting isn't new in the Philippines as far as I knew it and even if it hasn't gone online we already heard some news regarding that. I don't know if this could be more deep to lead on abolishing the entire cockfighting industry but as far as I'm concern there's not much to go on that direction, this industry likely to be right here for awhile even in decades to come.

You are absolutely right. This kind of spectacular and brutal fighting is already so deep in the Filipino blood that even if cockfighting were to be banned by law, it would still only take place away from the eyes of law enforcement. The authorities can't just cut this tradition out of the life of the Filipino people.
If its already part of the tradition then this is something that cant really get rid off because people would really be finding ways for them to make bets even if its means on doing underground and actually helding

those occasions wont really be that hard even though this thing do involves huge crowd based up on what i had researched and now we are on a pandemic on which health protocol should be imposed then it wont
really be allowed on the first place. So it is quite clever that they gone through online cockfight which do solves out the issue or problem on which this is a way on where they could make out bets
without trying to violate something.
More on like part of the culture already, it even existed even during the pre-Spanish era (others may disagree with me but this was just base on my research), it already existed hundred of years now. I think it wouldn't be avoided because if you are into Provinces you'd likely to expect a cockfight scene to be held during fiesta celebrations and even if it isn't permitted these gamblers will find a way not to take any hindrances.

Yes, that's the mitigation they provided, if they can't opress these violations on health protocols then better to do it online but with permissions from the government, as far as I know this is handled by PAGCOR especially the one available at GCASH (one of countries trusted mobile wallet and branchless banking service). Not new as I use this couple of times before and I just lie low due to nature of my work but this is more like a past time on my end. I guess the online cockfighting solve some issues here but if grade as bad for sure it is, since it's gamble, but it's fairly subjective to every individual if I'd be the one being asked.

He has a good point here as many are already into online gambling and if the government didn’t act, many younger people will suffer later on from addiction. Sabong has been controlled by rich people, it might be too late to have a good regulations but it can still help many. Because of this pandemic Online Sabong has been on a big market, and many can easily access and gamble, this is alarming especially younger people can easily place their bet.

I think it was allowed by the Philippine government to raise money during the pandemic.

However, it turns out to be very lucrative for the people behind as there are many Filipinos who are hooked into it and become addicted. So still just like any gambling platform, it has good and bad effects.

I'm not sure though if the bill will passed in the legislative Congress of the Philippines. There are two many powerful personalities in any gambling because of the huge money involved, just saying.

Big people are behind this so I don't think they can really take this down since many are already into this platform and we heard a lot of bad news already from this online sabong especially the recent news about scamming people because of online sabong. If they really want to control this they should have done this since then, but not its already available online so many people are already expose to it and its too late for the government to act.

Seasoned politicians always rely on building a distinctive propaganda that, when applied, hijacks a certain minority in the country, giving them the advantage of winning elections.!!!
This is what is currently happening in the Philippines, and I don't think the Philippines will give up the gains it makes through tax revenue on casinos.!!! There will also be a lot of opposition to this decision in the House of Parliament, so I think a gamble on cockfighting will go on for an unstoppable period of time.

Yes, this is most likely a pre-election attempt to get opponents of cockfighting and people not indifferent to animal cruelty issues and opponents of gambling on their side. As practice shows, politicians very often promise their supporters things that cannot be achieved. I think the cockfighting ban is just one of these things.

do that thing despite of prohibition but as i have heard up on which this activity had been presumed out to continue on this moment.

I have already heard up about online cockfight which i dont see anything wrong with it yet gambling industry isnt something that could be topped as long it would be legal

not sure if he will suceed with his campaign.  its governed by the big boys in the country namely Atong Ang. it could just be Cayetanos election gimmick since he is running for a position again but he has a good intention.
that's what I thought too, politicians tend to create a noise to stir attention towards them every time there is an election.

I understand that cockfighting in the Philippines is an integral part of history, but in my opinion this kind of gambling should be banned in the first place because of the cruelty to animals. I read in an article that these roosters are not only tortured to make them angrier but also drugged. In my opinion this is overkill.
it's basically the same as dogfighting. I am not a huge fan of it and there's even news where a police officer dies during an illegal gambling raid after being attacked by a rooster that still has tari(blade) connected to its foot. the rooster attacked the officer on the leg which unfortunately hit an artery resulting for the officer to die while being brought to the hospital due to blood loss.

I do think it is imperative to address the issue of online gambling. Given the fact that the government had acknowledged that it affected the community due to its highly-addictive 50/50 chance of winning, it is inevitable for law makers to notice such problem.

Anything that helps address the issue of gambling is definitely welcomed. Rather than the lawmakers being silent on this issue, any initiative combating such addiction may at least help our fellow citizens on being aware on it. One suggestion that I could think of is to increase the tax on these establishments and regulate them further so people would somehow think before they engage into such.
While it is important to address this form of gambling as it is obvious it is causing problems, the issue with the animal cruelty needs to be addressed as well, it seems it is a cultural thing on the country of the OP but it needs to be made illegal, after all there is a big difference between two people fighting each other as it is the case in boxing as both of those people decided to be there and fight, while in the case of animal fights the poor animals did not get to choose if they wanted to fight or not.

It's probably talking about Gcash and other online wallets because as far as I know you can deposit and withdraw thru Gcash now.

But yeah, I do agree, AA is just a pawn to this billion dollar online sabong that is taking the Philippines by storm and everyone is getting addicted and it needs to be stop. But I'm not sure if Cayetano can do it by himself alone.

In Search of Incredible
We had a discussion here about the illegal cockfight of Philippines when a police officer died in last year. Death during illegal cockfighting raid. And I have found another news where a ‘teen with special needs’ was killed by the Filipino police (Cop who shot dead teen with special needs sacked)
Both of these cases are connected with cockfight and cockfighting is illegal based on those cases. I'm wondering why the government aren't taking some serious action against this illegal cockfights! The are allowing it just for some money!

anyone who isnt from philippines, may really find this animal cruelty which may only exist underground but this cockfighting is already part of the culture. ~

Many countries have festivals where they hurts animal and government has nothing to do when it's a culture of the nation's. But the government shouldn't allow betting on this type of cultural occasion for their own benefits, no matter if it is online or offline.

It is always illegal, it will only become legal when you provide the required documents to register your cockpit and of course you need to have tons of cash in handy to hand it over to the corrupt officials for you to prevent from any raids once you operate without the authority for that specific event.

The biggest cock fighting tournament today can be accessible online, but at the moment they still don't offer crypto as the betting option.

I know many people might be concerned about the addiction but I am more concerned about the violent sports that might cause a lot of probelms for the people. It's extremely sad that cocks are forced to fight each other till the other one dies, injected with hormones to make them agressive causing massive damage to their body. It's not an ethical sports. There are places where this is banned. Just like how you would probably not see the bull getting stabbed in the head , cockfighting is sad. People need to understand that they can do other things like *hamster powered marbles or something* it's not hard finding something else. The whole idea is gamble but don't harm anyone else in that process, that might just be animal cruelty and not actually gambling. I hope they do see what's going on with this sports and decide to ban it for good.

People might see it as an act of animal cruelty but it's already part of the Filipino culture and even our ancestors used to do cockfighting. However, lots of people got addicted to online cockfighting this pandemic because of the influence of social media influencers, and to be honest, it ruined lots of lives but as for me, it isn't the game that should only be blamed but also the greediness of some players who see gambling as a shortcut to success. They see it as a survival tool during this pandemic without knowing that it could even make their situation worse.

Yes, I have a lot of friends and relatives who are making a lot of money from it, and I could honestly say that I really want to get into it but don't know how, but at the same time, I would say that I am not into it, and that I believe I am just thinking about it because they have influenced my thinking about it. Despite the fact that they earn a living and can afford many things as a result of it, they are also losing money because not everyone is winning at this time. You are correct because this is a part of the Filipino culture, and it is  legalized in our country as well.

Maybe they are agents which earn profits from referrals to their recruited bettor that's why your relatives earning a lot of money from this game, I also heard about this but never got an interest to join on any forms of its since its hard to accept money when your recruited people lose their own and what worst is maybe it can cause a lot which can harm them in the long run. This is the reason why I didn't refer any gambling site especially promoting my links since I don't want other to suffer the bad consequences of gambling.

Clarification I don't want to post any gambling stuff on social media since I don't want my relatives to get addicted on gambling.

I know that there are illegal dog fighting games in my country and the people are betting money on this s*it.
Dog fighting is an even worse form of cruelty against animals compared to cockfighting. This is disgusting.
I agree that cockfighting is a part of your culture, but gambling is just gambling.People will always find something to gamble and place bets on.I'm against such perverse forms of gambling, but I can't do anything.
The sad truth is that it is extremely difficult for the authorities to find and stop such illegal gambling activities.
I've heard that most of the online animal fighting gambling games are being streamed on the darkweb.
This is just awful...

So far, I personally only see people gambling cockfighting offline, and even then it is usually done in the middle of the forest, they choose the forest to gamble for avoid raids by the police, in Southeast Asia I think only the Philippines is the only one asian countries that legalize cockfighting betting both offline and online, besides that they only apply a prohibition not to gamble only on December 30 and the prohibition is regulated by law number 299.

So this is a Publicity stunt of this lawmaker. You can't blame him since most of the politicians are doing the same thing when an election is coming. None of them pays attention to it even when their neighboring kid got addicted and ruined thier lives by pawning their house to pay the debt due to online gambling.  But in times of election is where they get to find ways.

The government is part of the business like it happens in every country in the world, it's them, the politicians who facilitate all these since they have the money and can lobby votes. And then the government agrees after all the government monetizes this thru the tax.

a law maker Cayetano in our country Philippines calls for the rejection of legeslative bills for the successive passing of franchise bills for online cockfight betting firms. reason is, many lives had already been ruined because of the online "sabong" in the country. there was a news about a local celebrity who loses his fortune because of online betting. the article mentions the lad who was arrested for failing to pay debt of more than $10k.

Online cockfighting and gambling have been described by former Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano as the “new pandemic” that requires immediate government action in order to save Filipino families from social, moral and economic degradation.

not sure if he will suceed with his campaign.  its governed by the big boys in the country namely Atong Ang. it could just be Cayetanos election gimmick since he is running for a position again but he has a good intention.

anyone who isnt from philippines, may really find this animal cruelty which may only exist underground but this cockfighting is already part of the culture. even when i was a kid i already been exposed to mini cockfighting arena every festival where people bet for the lives of the roosters.

government is also earning from these betting firms which is why its becoming a usual to approve bills.
should the government risk the teens today knowing that cockfighting arenas can routinely operate everyday online?
Obviously that Man is only seeking for attention because of the Near coming Political election in the philippines and also obviously he wanted to gain popularity because he is a Loser in the former election.

Now that Online Cockfighting is gaining really a great return , He wanted to be heard with this.

and also the term should changed as "Former Lawmaker" and not a lawmaker.

If people do not have a routine activity and only play gambling every day, that can cause us to become addicted to gambling and once we are addicted, we will feel difficult to stop it.
No matter what the name of the gambling games is, that can become a new pandemic, especially in the young people who have a big passion for knowing something for more details to drag them to become addicted to gambling.
It needs more attention because we have already seen many sad stories from young people addicted to gambling.
And cockfight is one traditional gambling game that is popular in some countries to attract young people to try playing the game.

online cockfighting gambling, I've never tried it but it certainly looks very popular in your country

I want to know if cockfighting is legal in the philippines? if not then the philippine government should close all gambling sites that provide cockfighting and fine the owner because it is very detrimental

The industry is huge and they cannot just make it illegal because of the money they can possibly get from it. Most of the bettors are the big names in the country especially politicians and their millionaire friends But there was no online cockfight till now. I don't know because most of the gambling right now is online and looks like they make some huge money from it that's why they wanted to put the cockfighting online as well.

I still think it's dumb that instead of properly managing to gamble, they instead push not allowing it or removing it. It's pretty dumb, it's like yea, blame the game for letting someone lose all his money. See, it might even pass when being asked by the police kind of thing? Let's say someone killed a person, and he said it was because he saw it in a game and wanted to try it. Are the people so dumb that they'd tell the devs of that specific game to take responsibility and be the one undercharge instead? No right? It's the same thing here IMO. No comment on the cockfighting itself as gambling though, I might be biased since I've kind of viewed it as a norm ever since I was a kid, kinda just grew up knowing it.

Honestly, I just think it's part of his campaign since the election is pretty near, propaganda on his part, nothing more nothing else.

This is the biggest problem with online betting, not just cockfighting. Anything online can be accessible by anybody minor or not. Of course there are terms and conditions which include provisions that do not allow minors, but is there really a guaranteed way to screen the age of online bettors? There's none. Online betting could also be done anytime, whether you are in your car, at work, at school, at home, etc. Online betting should be closely monitored and strictly regulated.

It needs more approaching between the government, the betting firms, and the people because it is related to all teens today that everything online can be easy to access. He intends to stop or reject online cockfight betting but hopefully, that is not because of his political agenda.

Cockfighting became an alternative for some people to playing gambling and when that is online, those betting firms reach more players who can not go out by using their device to place their bet. The government needs to think about how their teens do not do something because that is related to their future.

I've watched cock fighting directly in my country. Here it is organised and events were conducted without any intervention of government. Here also betting will be done, most of the time this will be conducted as competition.

I've seen cock fights of philipines through different documentary. Recently saw a documentary in which a common man easily spends $150 into cock fighting. This is big amount and I found this to be part of their culture. Almost everyone used to grow a cock and keep it trained.

philipines isn't a rich country it's amazing that to see that a normal person can spend 150$ on a cockfight.
what you say is that it is conducted as competition but that perception has to be shown, marijuana is illegal but many buy and sell it and cops take bribes in many countries from the person they caught.

Lol, everyone here in my neighbourhood plays online sabong.

I will admit that I try to play it once, around $20 as capital but I lost everything. Been playing cockfighting for years, but I don't know, I don't feel the atmosphere of an online betting.

So I didn't get addicted by I hear a lot of horrendous stories around. Ordinary people losing big money and become addicted to online sabong.

Wait... do you mean hen fighting each other online?
Not hen but it's rooster versus rooster.

I've seen those fights in movies and most likely heard that betting on these fights in local of some countries like UAE, India, Pakistan is normal.
I've never heard that it's happening in middle east countries like UAE. But they're not that strict as their other nearby countries so it's probably really happening there.

I don't think the government cares about people there care about their own feelings and want to see the world destroy itself no matter what they say on your face that's the reality.
They do care for their people but it's just there are those politicians that are always politicking of any issue just as this.

Its not legal yet but they are still operate care to check this article to see some good information about it https://www.legalsportsbetting.ph/esabong/ and also I think its not good to legalize it knowing how huge the risk what it can bring to the people plus the only one who get rich from this is the owner only so its good that there is a law maker cutting its legalization since this could save people from a risky lifestyle.

They will allot money just to participate in their gambling habit even if the money is for their family's necessary needs. I believe it is normal for a lot of these cockfighting gamblers. We know that it is hard to earn that amount of money in their country, which is actually the monthly wage of most people. So for me, it is right that the lawmaker will reject this bill. At least save some people's lives that may further be addicted into this gambling hobby.

It has become a new pandemic, a pandemic that came out out of the pandemic, and celebrities is just one of the thousands of stories of people getting their life's miserable because of online cock betting, it's heavily promoted in social media and you can easily get in for as low as 1 pesos, the game is not complicated because you're only choosing between the two cocks.
The government should do something about this even if it's getting millions of tax revenues, but gambling is legal here in this region as long as the operators abide by the government rules and are compliant, all the government can do is to remind people to be a responsible gambler it's really up to the players to control their greed.

a law maker Cayetano in our country Philippines calls for the rejection of legeslative bills for the successive passing of franchise bills for online cockfight betting firms. reason is, many lives had already been ruined because of the online "sabong" in the country. there was a news about a local celebrity who loses his fortune because of online betting. the article mentions the lad who was arrested for failing to pay debt of more than $10k.

This is good initiative by Cayetano knowing how big the risk if they will allow that online sabong to be legalize on that country. Many is a  risk knowing that this is well promoted by some popular vloggers and other personalities that's why its good to reject its legislative law so that it can save peoples life who's not addicted on this kind of gambling category. If this willl be totally legalized for sure there are so many young people will get addicted knowing how easy for them to access this thru online.

Well, I will be the one who bet only this online game [online sabong] and bet [talpak] there.
There is no issue on us on how to control ourselves from addiction and even financial status problems, but I don't know from others who are addicted to it already. I think the best is the have a users regulation and it should be teens age below cant create account and access the site and there should be a limit amount to bet per day and should not exceed the limit amount.
This is a serious problem for all most Filipinos who did know how to control themselves and I agree with the campaign and should have a limit.

The concern about those irresponsible bettors, they should be responsible and don't put that much even their entire life savings. They have to moderate their gambling so that they won't be ruining their lives. However, this is very popular in gambling and they're losing everything they can in an online cockfight. Since no physical cockfights are allowed and it's still part of the measure to avoid covid-19 traction, it is the solution that they've found in continuation of it.

Frankly cockfighting should be banned in every civilized country because it is just a blood sport involving two animals that are pitted against each other, often with razors added, to inflict the most violence. The whole thing is barbaric regardless of the betting aspect. It's a real shame that people have to bet on such "sports" when I bet a lot of them are supposedly religious, who are meant to spread the joy of God instead of spilling blood for entertainment purposes. There are so many gambling games out there already that can be played digitally without harming any animals, so let's hope he succeeds at banning it and making the Philippines a slightly better place.

I understand that cockfighting in the Philippines is an integral part of history, but in my opinion this kind of gambling should be banned in the first place because of the cruelty to animals. I read in an article that these roosters are not only tortured to make them angrier but also drugged. In my opinion this is overkill.

It is legal and illegal, depends on the place and occasion. It's part of the country's culture that even exists since year 1500 and I don't thing banning it will be easyor possible. Big businesses are behind it.

Well, cockfighting is really addictive, even young ones enters and to bet in the locals.
Even before the online sabong (online live cockfighting) there is already live television for it other than the one in the locals but all of them are regulated.

As for the news, I don't think Cayetano will succeed to this, many big politicians (and big businessmen) are on this business so it wont work, though Cayetano's concern is somewhat right regardless his purpose of acting up to this.

Cockfight isn't an exclusivity of Phillipines. I know there are people in another countries who are also adepts of this gambling category and wish to legalize it in their own countries. Personally I'm totally against cockfight, not because it's a betting activity financially harmful to gamblers involved on it as justified by the article, but because it totally disrespects and abuses the animals that are incapable of rational thinking. I consider cockfight torture of the worse kind, especially because it includes mutilation. It's a very sadistic practice to put two animals to fight for entertainment purposes. So it really should be suppressed by authorities, land based or online ones.
