Even though Google has checked before launching it to the public, but there are still gaps that can be used to steal your assets through add ons, developers who have this source code can insert complicated code that is difficult to understand and often cases of theft of data stored through add ounce.
I guess Google has a strict checking system for extension developers as well as they do in the Play Store, although we also understand that applications in Play Store are not so safe from hackers. They didn't learn from how strict the extension selection process is on Apple's platform.

you better not need to use add ons that are not really unused and better not at all to be safer.
I only use extensions to change the appearance of my browser.

It's important to be aware of browsers add-ons, as reason there has no special surety to work with full faith that your data won't lost by using add-ons.

I don't usually download add-ons so I think I'm safe from that but I'm still taking precautionary measures when it is about downloading any file on the web. This got me a feeling of not downloading files even the most important that I have to save.
I started to have anxiety about this although I'm aware of the files that I should ignore and never entertain any of them. But the feeling was already there and it's really fearing me even though I know how to take care of it.
Some extensions have also a virus that can still get your information, so do not install any extension that is not known by the computer because that might be a malicious file that can steal your information. Double-check also your antivirus so that if you install an application, you can see if that app has a malicious file inside.
I'm not pointing to the extensions but those normal downloadables that I have to on the web. I'm aware of those extensions and I don't usually download any of them because I've learned not from my mistake but from the experience of others.
I have already my anti-virus and the main concern here is how a user used to browse on the web. Whether he has tons of anti-virus but he's not careful with what he does on the internet, he's still prone to things like this.

For those who don't know or are addicted to browser extensions you need to be careful because many browser add on are dangerous and they can steal data and keys from your PC, the latest dangerous extension is Ledger chrome extension which is fake, this add on does nothing than steal your backup recovery phrase

That was right. We must always be mindful of the browsers we use as well as the sites we logged in for there may be some instances that the browser we are using to get into this forum or access our wallets online might be accessed by the browser we are using for some might have features that can steal or have an access to our account even without our permission. So better check the settings and features of the browser you will be using if you will try to use other browser aside from chrome or firefox. Better be mindful not to click strange pop ups that will drive you into other page just to secure your information. If you are somewhat a forgetful person, better write down into a piece of paper or save into a document file your seed or password or anything you have used to secure your account rather than allowing the browser to save your password to let you easily access your account once you wish to log in to the same site again.
Definitely, hackers have some techniques to use just to hack important information of every people. It is a kind of malware that is giving lots of advertisements and can give you some malicious files when you click it, it is exactly an Adware. There are other types of it but I will not mention it all. The idea is that we must be mindful of our moves because the internet is full of scammers and hackers, so we should be aware of every decision we make to protect our important information especially our wallet.

I think always install add-ons from a trusted website and don't install unknown add-ons. Still, open chrome in the incognito mode that is safe and secures due not to save history in the browser, and hardware wallet is secure than web wallet or any other extension wallet.

Indeed dangerous because the browser extension can be manipulated by inserting a copy paste address virus, but the address comes from a scammer, the more severe it might be a trojan virus that can control a pc such as a remote desktop the impact would be terrible because all important data might be stolen, and now to avoid the virus I only use browser extensions for cryptocurrency wallets like metamask, mewcx, tronlink for other extensions. I don't use them.

I want to thank you for the information related to chrome browser add-ons. I totally agree with what you have said there are most dangerous add-ons which may steal the information and other data which is stored on our hard disks. So making proper research on this is most important while adding an add-on. Recently I have seen a link of some website which was offering $5 for add-on of its site to the chrome browser extension when I made research I got to know that it was spam and even alerted to many others on this dangerous extensions.

I guess the Google team has been checking extensions or add-ons before they released on the chrome store, they don't seem to check the name of the extension listed by the uploader.

It looks like I will delete all extensions that I use, including Metamask.

before installing the extension you should first see the permissions that we will give. I once installed the recommended extension from web mining and when I saw the permission extension, he was able to read all the data that I access on my laptop.
so be careful when you install an extension. love your assets

Is that possible inspite the security on your browser? I am doing a chrome extension for my metamask but never got compromised. If such things as this could be access by someone and that could be a sort of malicious threat on our file.

Also once the permission is granted how come they can read all data even your site access is secured? Very interesting to know how this could happen.

Browser add-ons can be a very serious security vulnerability. Do not install more add-ons than necessary on your joyful browser.
For such purposes, use another, entertaining, browser, where you will not store any information important to you. So you will significantly increase your security.

For you to be able to avoid it, you should always check the Terms and Agreements of it not just accepting it all the way. There is some instances that the Terms and Agreement is asking if they can collect data while you are using their product. If you don't want that to happen, you better change the product that you are going to use.

Thank you for sharing this with the crypto family. As I always say to some of my friends one of the most easiest way to get hacked now is installing and adding shit/unknown dds-on to your browser. This adds-on are there to steak informations so I will urge you all to please do not download any kind of browser adds-on. I will also like to urge users to get the Metamask adds-on as it is the best.

And with crypto no matter what, always assume you could be compromised. I still never let extensions access my wallet (except MetaMask).
yes I also use metamask to access my wallet and trade in a decentralized market very easily. Updates must continue and must be checked whether the extension is genuine or not. This is very important rather the theft of assets does not occur in a personal wallet.

Up to now, extensions installed on browsers are the fastest way for hackers and bad guys to gain access and steal information from users. Therefore, you should not use any extension on your computer because it can make your computer insecure and you will lose money anytime. And never store bitcoin or altcoin in online wallets, you should consult and buy cold wallets to be safe.

Honestly I have never been interested in adding or using any extensions to my personal browser because long before news like this I was worried about a bad risk that might occur. So I'm just going to leave my default browser without having to add something that basically doesn't really matter, because any extension won't be used all the time.

Actually there is no need to be afraid anyway, this is just a matter of carelessness. The original extension will always be accessible via the official website, if it is not from the official website then it is confirmed to be a fake extension. I myself always install verified extensions from the official website, we just need to make sure the beginners understand this.

btw, indeed the extension will not be used always, but it is very helpful because sometimes there are exchanges that require extensions like metamask for trading.

Thank you so much for reminding everyone. I have never tried to extend any new apps. I think we should only add the apps that we have tried to use or apps that are rated 5 stars. That's the necessity we need to check before adding it to our browser. In addition, we have Norton software, which helps us remove virus websites from the first visit. I have tried it over the past months and my computer has been very safe. You can test it. Link is below:

Thank you for making us aware of us but first of all, Ledger doesn't have an add-on. They have the live app which called Ledger Live which you can track all of your cryptocurrencies on your wallet. If you are into add-ons make sure that you are using the legit ones and you know the company background of that add-on. Someone add-ons are really making our browsing experience better but you need to be aware if the one you have downloaded is legit and they really have it.

Many similar extensions will steal user data.
we must avoid it and always check before using the extension.
if we believe it's an evil extension we can report it and Firefox or Chrome can immediately delete it.
stay alert, because there is no safe system in the internet world.

I like extensions, they're very useful, they're small, they don't take up space and in general they're good and lightweight BUT always keep them updated and always check that they are legit and whitelisted by antivirus. Avoid those you can't verify as good.

And with crypto no matter what, always assume you could be compromised. I still never let extensions access my wallet (except MetaMask).

Agree with you we should be really careful with the extensions, my friend became a victim of it just a few months ago. He installed a number of browser extensions for various purposes, and after a while his information was stolen and the thief gained his private key. He lost all the ETH he had hoarded for more than 2 years and now he has become an empty-handed in this market. Ideally, we should keep the computer clean and never install any strange software on the computer

That's why I don't believe any online wallet or chrome extension based wallet. I have a Ledger Nano S but I already uninstalled all the Ledger related apps and extension from my pc, because I don't need them. Not only this, I heard Metamask fake extension was created and a VPN also violated crypto data before. So, I believe everyone should stop relying on an extension based wallet, a hardware wallet is not that expensive guys!

Absolutely. Especially when you are prompted to install certain browser extensions which collect your personal data potentially with some monetary reward, it is likely that your personal data is going to get exploited without you ever knowing about it.

However, there are certain addons such as Metamask that should be promoted.

These addons help prevent phishing sites, etc., and should be more prominently used.

I was always wary about this thing called add-ons on the browser I'm using, especially if the related add-ons involved cryptocurrency or my privacy.
Hackers are getting smarter each day, now even an app could be a phising app. Better be careful about everything 24/7, huh. I've also heard there's some maybe virus or things that could change your sending/received address to the hackers' address. My friends somehow experienced that problem before. Always check everything.

Best thing to do is only install the most needed add-ons and always read the description and look if it's from a trusted source or just another fake extension.
Descriptions and reviews coming from other people who are also downloaded the program are very important to consider. If you want to stay safe you need to invest your time learning information about the add-ons that you are planning to use and install to your computer. Try to use only those legit and have a good reputations and if possible avoid those that you are not comfortable with.

Extensions are not safe even though we have an anti virus some of these malware can bypass some security features but it is also good that we always have it. The best prevention is dont use any extension at all. For those hackers this is an easy way to get money so they dont care whether many people got affected.

I wonder what kind of people who often uses these add on extension on a browser. I rarely uses it, sometimes not. I only use what's on default because I kinda find using extensions will just put me up to much work. So, if I would be loaded up then I will be just leaving. Install anti-virus in your laptop or pc always then update this too so your secure like the scammer can't steal your data if you do that then don't easily click a site that you don't know and think twice before accesing different site,Moreover i think use 2 laptop or pc like one is for testing then use already in the one if you think that your safe
This is not some kind of phishing via a website, but a chrome extension that attaches a keylogger to your PC, I think you are misunderstanding.

some antivirus can't detect it, and no longer need to do the testing, the results will be the same because this is a fake extension, you only need to delete the add-on and install other official extensions that are more trusted.

You are right it works on the browser, not directly on your pc anti virus can's detect that only if you have an anti-virus with a feature that can detect bad browser extensions, we really need to be very careful on adding extension always read reviews and updates on browser that you are going to add.

This is no longer a new thing, most browser extensions are very bad and shouldn’t be found in your computer because they anything from stealing information, passwords and more. Not only are some browser extensions  very bad, there are also similar reports about mobile apps that are malicious and can have access to your Blockchain and other apps, and also harm your phone.

I have also heard of some Desktop apps and browser extensions that will always change the address you copy to the scammers/hackers address, and if you don’t check the address before sending you will end up sending to the wrong address.

These security risks are becoming more and more prevalent theses days as the technology advances. The thing here is that your absolutely correct about beeing more careful. On android the "Google PlayStore" is a pretty secure place to download apps. So I think that by using my smart phone all  throughout the day some of my lazy downloading habits from android tend to rub off onto my PC use when using downloaded browser extensions. It's a new year and I really should be practicing my due diligence better.

Not only that, it’s also becoming advance these days and these scammers/hackers are becoming very very smart in creating something that can’t be detected easily and really look like a legit. They can be around anywhere in the web/internet or even in app store so we should be extra careful in whatever app or extensions we are downloading as to not compromise our information and to safeguard our assets.

I have experienced the incident of losing money because of the add-ons on the Chrome browser called Multilogin. This incident was already 2 years ago.
When I want to transfer a number of btc to the exchange to be exchanged for fiat, the exchange deposit address is replaced by the add-ons to be it address. So when I sent it, I never got to the exchange. When I turn off the add-ons, it turns out that the address deposit exchange is back to normal. From there I realized that many add-ons that are harmful to the security of our data or funds.

Honestly I have never been interested in adding or using any extensions to my personal browser because long before news like this I was worried about a bad risk that might occur. So I'm just going to leave my default browser without having to add something that basically doesn't really matter, because any extension won't be used all the time.

Finding different sources of reviews regarding those extension also helps a lot to determine if the extension is really a legit one. So, always be careful in installing ad-ons and this also goes for other applications used for crypto industry. We all need to be not just computer literate but also be careful and observant users.

Some people also said that there are add on that hijack your clipboard more specifically your copied address and replace it with the address of their own. Even the chrome extension store is full of crappy extension and you need to alertful before even installing any browser extension out there.
Phishing apps are everywhere: Chrome Webstore, Youtube and Google Play are pretty dangerous recently, they banned even MetaMask for a while. I am afraid that many newcomers will stop think about crypto because it is so dangerous place. Hackers see quick and easy money.  Cry
I agree, the phishing is getting out of hand if it could be listed in a store. I thought google is better than this in term of filtering app but their standart and filtering method are shit.

I don't really use that much of a chrome extensions/add-ons since it is not that even gonna be practical for me to use it, since my Chrome is already eating up my memory space. If there's gonna be crypto-related add-ons that I am gonna use, it would be mostly Metamask only. I don't even trust any wallets add-ons in Chrome, because hackers will do what it takes to steal one's wealth online.

for browser add-ons, we have to be aware of this because since crypto has a large enough value (2017), there have been many developers or people who use browser add-ons to steal some of crypto from us, a few days before the new year there was an airdrop offering btc from blockchain.info but can only be obtained through installing the browser add-ons and of course this is a scam because through Twitter, the blockchain said that the add-ons were not from them.

It is quite frightening to use browser add-ons.  We should not add anything unless it is fully verified.  And even if it is, we should still be careful about updates.  I have read lots of attacks that uses browser add-ons that is why I avoided it as much as possible.
I don't mind adding extra apps on my browser unless it is verified and trusted especially when it comes to browser extensions to have a different use of the browser like downloading with torrent etc. I won't use any add-ons unless it is found in google store or any trusted store, the fact that hackers these days are very clever with their tools already disgust me.

Browser addons will improve your surfing experience. Important features are often absent from Basic browser, hence arises the question of addons. I always try to follow some measures.
1. I always download addons from well known developers and they make legit and safe addons to improve browser capabilities. Always check total number of downloads and how people thinks about the addons.
2. Always read the privacy policy to understand, what sort of data will be accessed by browser, what data will be stored by addons.
3. Money making addons are risky. Addons will make you rich, no way. They will never.

Thank you for this open thread in which many people will surely be enlightened about this kind of scam activities in which they will be able to careful next time when they are browsing something on the internet.
This kind of merely cases somehow is like a phishing but differ in terms of use, because this kind of activity is where you will be able to add some extensions to your browser like for example the Google Chrome in which you will manage it eventually then after this they probably have the extensions on your browser and there are some cases that when you have logging in your wallet they can get your information and necessary data in order to steal it and use to some illegal activities. This is kind of dangerous to every one so I assume that we will be careful accessing this kind of add-ons browser.

Hmmm! This is the first time I will be seeing this. I always like to confirm the authenticity of any app or add-on, before using it. Even Metamast and others, had their fakes. I am thinking that Google itself should find a way of checkmating these things. There should be a way in which the system will be selective, even when the user is trying to add any app. I know some people would have fallen victim of this.

Really a much useful information for the bitcoiners. Right now more and more hackers/scammers are into the try of stealing cryptocurrencies. Whenever we add an extension we need to be very careful and read the instructions. Now the focus has turned towards the add-ons, earlier it was the faking of exchanges and websites to steal data and cryptocurrencies.

Yes, this is important information, some people might ignore something this small. But who would have thought of this small thing could result in a great danger. Indeed, some add-on web like to steal data without us knowing it, as much as possible we have to minimize errors because we are not careful. Not safe when Google doesn't screen all these extensions and addon first before approving. Is it possible that even when you download the browser addon from the website of the original developer, it still can be compromised by hacked with malicious intent?

I have long been using some chrome add ons/extensions, I have not experience anything yet. The very recent I've used was the Tronlink, was just trying but didn't disable it since I'm using to bet on some games.

Thanks for the warning. It's ridiculous how poor security on browser extensions is, even if the code is clean a silent update or remote payload can be loaded into any webpage at any given time without warning. Worse, extension sales/transfers happen all the time and that's the cause of a lot of recent attacks.

We're taking this issue very seriously and releasing the Aricoin browser extension as open source next month. You then just load the extension in via Chrome's developer options. Very easy to do and no risk of foul play - no external connections and no auto-updates. These 2 rules are very important when it comes to dealing with third party browser extensions.
