A scammer called one of my friend with one number claiming to be me and possibly mimicked my voice using A1 or whatever. He claimed that his phone was off because he slept in the hospital. for my friend I was the one talking. He told him that my mother was at hospital laying critically sick and  ask for financial support.

what can we do, to avoid being a victim.

this is also the disadvantage of AI(artificial Intelligence) because of everything now is possible and look they can Mimic our voices to pretend it was us? so it is easy for them to scam people though it is still stupidity to be franked by other people when we knew who or what our friends way of talking.
and when asking about connected to money? then this is stupidity for me and yes I will never fall from that unless talking to the person I really knew.
and another thing that this bogus scammers had been doing this since long time , pretending to be someone and our family members are hospitalized to make us take our money out and hand them over them.

I can't seem to understand why as the world progresses with the current trend with technological advancement, fraud also grows and diversifys too, adopting every tool that will make scamming go through successfully. We should be safe outside

This is the height of it. Sometimes I wonder how such people swallow every Atom of conscience in them to want to swindle people. AI is very good but will have an adverse effect on the society. This is not the first time I'm hearing scammers used AI to replicate voice of their impostor.

.....

He told him  that he needed $2000 to make initial deposit to  enable the doctors commerce treatment. He was sounding very pitiable and helpless. my friend thought I was truly the one calling and had sympathy and pity and requested for account details but surprisingly the account details the scammer sent wasn't beering my name. my friend called me and it rang. He was surprised and asked if I had charged my phone. I told him my phone has been on. He ask about my mother , I told him my mother was good at home He ask me my location and I told him I was at work. He then told me what is happening. I quickly called him on WhatsApp video to show him it was a scam and that neither my mother nor myself was in the hospital.

........

So the bolded helped stop the scam you said happened. It's actually an important feature of the fiat world but implemented wrongly. Such scams would probably have scaled through on Cryptocurrency due to anonymity feature. But the feature is very useful when dealing with strangers or when operating in public/trustless environments. Nothing stops a cryptocurrency from safely verifying and linking the identities of its users(who need to) to their crypto "accounts", so that they can always share the identities with families, relatives, friends etc, when necessary.

I'm surprised there are still so many scams like that.
I think it's best not to answer calls from numbers you don't know.
It is also recommended not to click on the URL attached to the message.
A thorough check is necessary because scammers are always trying to deceive victims in new ways.

This seems to be happening worldwide now. I also know someone who has experienced this. Her family was called by a voice identical to hers, asking to transfer money to an ATM so that the scammer could withdraw it using a code. The story was that she had lost her debit card.

They didn't fall for it because she always pays with her mobile phone and therefore doesn't need a card.

Bizarre experience.

I noticed that the number of scammers is increasing now, as well as the way they scam.
3 people tried to scam me in one day lol. No, actually there are 4 of them and nice try to them.
So you have to be really careful nowadays, avoid giving personal information or details, always double check for your safety. There are also stupid scammers but they can still get you if you are not really careful

Well I was a victim of some scams before. So I have a very special hate for someone that will lie and cheat to others just for his own profits.

But I did learn my lesson and even if i was very mad I did learn somethings from it. If someone is calling you about medical reasons and dont know him we an be sure it is a scam.

That is scary what did happen with you and these scammers now use AI to make it sound more real. And I am happy you did not fall for his scam.

Control your greed and lust and keep yourself away from short term riches and work hard, and you will see that you will not be scammed, and your faith will be much stronger By these scams are easing the way and presenting the propaganda in such a way that people are forced to believe and by that means creating systems to convince people in the first place Because they are investing first and then after trusting the people, they are embezzling all the money together and the common people are the victims.Hey, these places they're finding are common people in developing countries because when people are in danger, they want to save themselves from danger with a little something and this weakness is used.
Currently, doing more financial fraud than personal information or important information etc. As an example, there was a big scam a few days ago.We are now so unconscious that we see big scandals in front of our eyes, and yet we fall prey to them Because the unethical desires nested deep in our minds are the manifestation of them
To protect yourself from fraud, the point of saying is to reduce greed, when we are more attracted to something, we don't think about security anymore and that is the opportunity that some scammers are taking advantage of.For your own protection Check regularly if the phone is hacked and my data is safe and keep yourself in check to protect yourself from hacking and prevent yourself from high aspirations Then you will be protected from fraud.

scammers have developed so many ways of carryout there missions. which most of them are

1 when they inbox you, they will call you to resend the message to them. if you does , you have given them access to carry on there mission.

2 do not allow them to have access to your phone or laptop. and never keep any important password on your phone.

people should know how to avoid them , don't keep any important bank details on your phone. civilization and technology have killed us.
the best thing is never use your personal phone in any action that may give scammers and hackers a chance .
use separate gadget for your online using , with this you will never allow them to get near your personal data.

and also , stop from dealing or even engaging in other online thing that you have no idea completely, specially thru email and phone verifications.

Scammers are going extremely far to get your details, I was surprised how a scammer got my bank account name and number claiming to work in the bank, so he asking me if I'm so and so person I said yes so told me that my account has an issue and that for them to rectify it I will need to send them the code that will be sent to me so I refused, if not they would have hacked my account.

Few months back a guy called me, he even mentioned my name saying my sister is sick and has been rushed to the hospital (he was also faking a cry)
When I asked him my sister's name then he changed to abusing me.
-
How do you think they (scammers) were able to know your name?

The name and contact number are two of the most crucial pieces of information that scammers can have. I was looking for a job before, and, unfortunately, I made a mistake by sending my CV to some people who did not use company email addresses.
After a few days or a week, I started receiving phishing and promotional text messages from unknown numbers, and they included my full name. Fortunately, these messages are automatically marked as spam, so I avoid clicking on any links sent through those messages. I am still receiving some of them even now. The unfortunate thing is that scammers can easily pass or sell this information to other scammers, making it difficult, and maybe even impossible, to get rid of. Unless changing of mobile number is considered.

That's true and lately they (scammers) have developed lots of ways to reap others of their hard earned cash.

Few months back a guy called me, he even mentioned my name saying my sister is sick and has been rushed to the hospital (he was also faking a cry)
When I asked him my sister's name then he changed to abusing me.

I'd advice everyone out there to be careful with every single transaction they make, before sending money to anyone confirm if it's truly their account and also be watchful on the links you use as they can hack your phone or account through links.

We should avoid any transaction when information is not matching. Scammers are very sharp people, they discover new things to scam a person. When any person ask account name and we are not talking  physically, there are chances, scam will happen. To avoid scam, one should get minor details. One of my friend was surrounded by scammer, my friend did not know he was a scammer. Scammer beg account code and my friend gave him code and after few minutes account was empty. Many hackers are also available on online work. They hack account and withdraw all money, any person in the world can hack any person account. Poverty is everywhere, people are jobless, people are dying due to hunger and after they start scams, in this way they earn. Man mind should be  active when anyone concern with money. No one will scam with us if we are aware of scammers. No give your personal information to anyone even a person who is close to you.

A few months ago I had the same case, a stranger called home telling my parents that I was very sick and needed a lot of money. he said his voice was similar to mine, I don't know what technology they use, but the more the fraudsters come here the more terrible.
There's a technology, tool or app that allows the caller to change their voice and it's just a few taps away during the call. And that's why it's easy to copy the voice of their targets.

But these scammers won't just attack and call you right away. They're wise and will do some studies first on what kind of voice the victim have and they'll resonate with the voice based on what they heard.

So, you probably have met or talked to them and they've got some recorder or just on their minds and have it remembered as they copy your voice and call your relatives.

Scammers are everywhere and this is a serious case to be tackled.

And most times we act so adamant towards some careless issues that make us fall victims of their trap.

And i think its when we prone our personal information to be insecure, that way they can get full access and disrupt everything to a point of tarnishing our image...

We just need to be alert and more security concious to be a step ahead of them.

People are just too lazy to use their brains legally but they prefer to use it illegal, forgetting that they will do better off,if they stay away from illegal activities. Scammers are everywhere and they come up with new strategy every time. This is why it is better to be vigilant and trust nobody on phone or on internet claiming to be someone that you know. You should ask some questions that are private about the person that they claim to be.

The funny thing is that sometimes they guess this numbers that they call or email that they send mails to. Before you know it,you will see that you have a new mail in the morning and when you click on it,a scam story. Or you pick up your call and you hear someone claiming to know you with the little information that he got about you. We all know our  weaknesses in terms of cyber security let work and improve it for our safety.

Just last year our government imposed strict rules on phone network companies because of these frauds and they've done well since it decreased the results of scams nowadays. But this kind of fraud you are talking about is only in the movies, I never thought someone could actually mimic our voice, and the worst of the matter is, that they are using it to scam others with the voice they recognized as their friends and families. that's why we always need to update ourselves in terms of how to prevent ourselves from becoming victims of such kinds of scams because they always get updated and know exactly what to do to fool their victims.

Be cautious with personal information, avoid sharing sensitive details like passwords or financial information unless absolutely necessary. Always double & triple check emails, websites or callers before providing any information. Look for signs of legitimacy such as official email addresses or secure website connections.

Always use strong, unique passwords, create complex passwords for different accounts and consider using a password manager.

Be skeptical of unsolicited communication: Be wary of unexpected emails, calls, or messages asking for personal information or urgent action..

Keep software up to date, regularly update your operating system, antivirus & other software to ensure security patches are in place. Enable two-factor authentication, use this additional layer of security whenever possible to protect your accounts.

This is the message and that is also what we can do to avoid falling into the scam. This pattern of scamming has been on for long time but if you are careful then you will pick the red lines. One way you can get these red lines is to delay the process a little or stretch the conversation they will begin to be restive to continue.

Also you can get hold of the trick with the third party bank account details like you did. This is also the reason some businesses don't allow third party financial transaction especially if you are requesting to withdraw like in casinos and other online business transactions because they believe any thing is possible to happen to your account like being hacked, so if you are not requesting withdrawal to be received in your account registered with them you may need to go through longer process that is not the usual just to delay you and in the process verify. We have to be careful because scammers come in different ways.
I agree with you,  third-party payment open ways for criminal penetration just like In this case,  and more also one have to be overly sceptical about the too good to be true or whatever the other person at the other hand is telling,  any conversation that is putting you into pressure to act is a red line also and we have to be more careful when it comes financial payments.

Most casinos and exchanges are already aware of this which is why the prohibit third-party payments.

what can we do, to avoid being a victim.

1) Make sure you keep your personal information safe. Don't expose your information on third-party platforms and social media
2) Ensure you secure your phone from hacking and phishing. Avoid clicking on links randomly without checks.
3) Don't be greedy because scammers always come up with enticing schemes with high profits.
4) In any case of hack or security compromise ensure you go through the right recovery and security process.
5) Be sensitive and avoid making hasty decisions. When you receive such calls or messages contact the people involved and don't rush into action. Your friend was able to outsmart the scammers because he didn't allow the situation to distort his sense of reasoning. He had to confirm the situation with you first.

Let's be careful of scammers, many people are scammed especially on websites to earn a lot of money, so let's all be careful and also don't give important information to people we don't know.
Almost 80%+ of the internet users have either been scammed before or are about to get scammed and funny enough to the extent that the number of scammers is still on the increase and even those who may have had multiple bad experiences with those scammers still fall victim to new tricks and this has made us to be worried and on our ability to protect ourselves.

This type of scam is very popular and I have received numerous calls from such scammers before but due to my experience over time,  I can easily detect whether or not the person on the other end is a scammer of not.

I just imagine how someone can pull off that trick and would work well in his favour. How can your friend be like this, if you claim him to be your friend, he should be able to dictate your voice easily amongst thousand voice echoing. But he failed to dictate this particular one which happens to involve money. I don’t know how an AI can mimic voice or any tool whatsoever. But your friend should be smarter than this to avoid future occurrence of such

If your friend trust you so much and believed in you, he wouldn’t go extra mile to want to confirm that it’s you he’s really talking to now through WhatsApp call.
Message well passed and one should be careful when it involves transferring of money from one party to another. Always call to confirm especially when there’s a different name with the person that gave you the account details that you know he or she with.

what can we do, to avoid being a victim.

We can't do anything else then getting proper awareness related to such scams. I have also heard a similar story sometime ago and the scammers used same kind of AI voice cloning tools to scam many people by mimicking the voice of their loved ones. Sometimes we really can't decide that what to do in such situations and we become helpless because the scammers create a scenario that we can't ignore at any cost.

Like in your friend's case he had no option but to send money to his friend because his friend's mother was in hospital and a good friend will most probably help in such situations without asking for much details, but your friend was smart enough that he called you because otherwise he would have lost his $2000 to a scammer. I think you've done a great job by telling us about that scamming tactic those scammers tried on your friend because such threads can educate others to be aware of such scams and they can then avoid being victim of such scams. AI is really going to cause much trouble in future, and that's why I think we should be well prepared to find solutions for those troubles in advance.

The number of scammers are increasing and the number of methods are also increasing. Scammers try to make use of new technology before a number of people know about them to defraud their victims before the technology becomes popular. For these new kind of scams, a way to avoid falling victim is to always verify and ask for reasonable evidence. I understand that friends and family are supposed to help each other, but even for that reason, no one has the right to demand my money that I disciplined myself to keep, nobody has the right to demand for it via emergency that will make me make decisions without thinking.

That scam is common everywhere and I think before they attack a target, they're knowing first details of the victim that they're going to copy. That's why they're also observant before doing the scam and you don't display all your sensitive information on the web or any social media platform.

what can we do, to avoid being a victim.
Talk to your family that you should have a sign or words to say that you're actually legit the ones talking to them and vice versa. If that word isn't mentioned by the caller then that means it's not you that's calling them for help. Start to do this in circle of your family and have yourselves call sign that you and them only know it, don't tell it publicly because the scammer might know what you're up to and will also copy that call sign of yours or anything that's going to be unique and you can identify each of yourselves easily.

A scammer called one of my friend with one number claiming to be me and possibly mimicked my voice using A1 or whatever. He claimed that his phone was off because he slept in the hospital. for my friend I was the one talking. He told him that my mother was at hospital laying critically sick and  ask for financial support.

I quickly called him on WhatsApp video to show him it was a scam and that neither my mother nor myself was in the hospital.

scammers have deviced another means of scamming and defrauding people. thank God my friend didn't transfered money to the thief. we have been calling the number since then but switched off. A lot of things are happening.
please, if You received a distress text message or call from your friends or relatives asking for financial help , verify before you  send the money especially if the account details and phone number is not that of your relatives or friend in questions.
