Theoretically there is no difference in expected returns when solo mining vs. pool mining. What changes is the variance. If it takes you a week to earn a block (on average), would you rather get partial payments every day, or the whole block at once?

I almost always join pools, but I am currently mining doubloons solo right now.

I typically join pools as well, but with launches it seems the way to go right off the bat is solo for sure, as the pools crash, payouts are incorrect, etc

I've had decent luck with P2P pools though and they seem fairly stable

Is the coin scrypt or SHA-256?

No particular coin in question at the moment, but typically I'm referring to when a coin launches.  I solo mined PXC, some LKY, and some USC, but just not sure where the threshold is to jumping in a pool rather than trying to solo.  I usually stopped once it got above 2 as it didn't seem to be doing much good.  Was just wondering if there is some sort of guideline...

If you're mining a scrypt coin, definitely better to be in a pool. If it's SHA-256, 1MH/s won't get you much of anything.

What are you mining? And why solo?

At what difficulty should I stop solo mining?  I'm running 1mh/s
