Is there any particular reason why you recommend a newbie Bitcoin XT?

Currently it doesn't make that of a big difference. If OP wants to run a full node, both XT and core will be participating in the network similarly for a minimum time until (January 11). Of course running bitcoinXT shows support towards Gavin's and Mike's proposal for the block size in a way but still doesn't affect the outcome of the voting mechanism that is effective after January.

newbie question for you: I have core. On Jan 11th of next year if the vote goes toward XT, will I have to download XT client software or will there be an update for core to handle the increase in block size?

I'd say wait a little and see how this develops. It's very likely that we'll know what's going to happen ahead of this date. But trying to explain all the possibilities could get complicated and confusing. Don't worry though, neither of both sides is aiming to destroy bitcoin.

Nobody knows. I wouldn't really worry too much about it. As long as there is no fork, it doesn't really matter which client you are using(other than making a statement).

If you're still facing this issue, You may try Electrum, It's very best and safest wallet for me, as it have's unique wallet encryption and unique wallet recovery, For me it's very fast and easy to install , It can be done for about 50 minutes (estimated). If you lost your pc, You can still recover the wallet by just imputing the golden password / or seed to your wallet again. I'm using it right now and i never faced issue's about it, Their update system are working properly too.

I need to upgrade my Bitcoin 0.7.2 BETA
it has been updating for a week now with no new blocks and stuck on 67.0%
Back up wallet.dat.
Download Bitcoin core 0.11.0: https://bitcoin.org/en/download
Install over your old install.
Run executable and wait ~5 days to sync the blockchain.

I run BOTH, that is how I handled the choice.
You handled the choice by not making a choice?  How ambivalent of you.

I gave him 2 choices which are pretty similar to what he is currently using.
What is the problem? Don't you like choices?

Order bias I suppose.

On topic: If you haven't already, make a backup of your wallet before attempting anything.
