Hi Jason,

What sort of role do you see the association playing? What type of work will it be doing?

Will bitcoin advocacy play a part?

I ask because I just created a thread about bitcoins and taxation in Australia, and one of my mid-term goals is to obtain a private ruling on Bitcoin from the ATO. I think it would be great if the request for such a ruling came from a Bitcoin nonprofit such as the association.

Unfortunately i've had to create an account and am unable to post directly and respond to this post: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=303970.20

My name is Jason Williams and I am indeed the current president of the Bitcoin Association of Australia.  In conjunction with Max Kaye (who is the Treasurer), as mentioned in the related post, we also founded @BitcoinSYD.

In the spirit of openness I am also working on my own Bitcoin related startup, BitPOS.

The Bitcoin Association of Australia is an incorporated entity which was formed a few months back, but recently incorporated as a not-for-profit  Incorporation No.: INC1301339 (October 23rd, 2013).  We've been working really hard behind the scenes with John Stahl to formalise our relationship with the Bitcoin Foundation as well as create relationships around the world.

While what we've been working on is no secret, we've not really made a big splash and announced what we've been doing.  Until the past few days, we've been working on arranging things such as membership schedules as well as a formal board and legally registered entity.

Currently we're all volunteers putting in a lot of time after we've finished our day jobs to make this happen.

Most of us are located on the east coast, however we're represented outside of Sydney.  Let me introduce the board of The Bitcoin Association of Australia:

Jason Williams - President, Sydney
Pantelis Roussakis - Vice President, Bellingen
Max Kaye - Treasurer, Sydney
Adam Poulton - Secretary, Hobart
Bret Treasure - board member, Perth
Martin Bajalan - board member, Sydney
Tristan Winters - board member, Australian expat, currently in Berlin, Germany
