How long have you waited? It sometimes takes me 20 minutes or so to get my first connection. Pretty sure it shouldn't, but not really worth bothering to fix.

May be long indeed

I initially used the .22 client and also got problems getting more than 3-4 connections.
then I switched to .19 (I had it installed from long ago) and got about 1k connections and huge system slowness (using at a ubuntu 11.04 netbook, jeesh do I regret this upgrade!! got to switch to debian but too lazy to do that..). I tried alternating between 19 and 22 and consistentle got very low .22 connections and hundreds on .19.

Anyway I tried .22 again today and it gets around 100 connections now ... I guess they might have fixed something external. Or just a new influx of .22 users maybe...

I made a topic in the tech support section about this so you may want to check it out, got reply about the .22 using random irc channel instead of the same one in previous versions. Probably a way to reduce number of connections, high number of which causes low performance on lower end machines.

And if all else fails, use the Fallback Nodes.

FWIW, all that is encoded into -dnsseed

Another possible workaround for others in the same boat.  When I start the client I begin to 'Generate Coins' even tho it is basically useless it DOES get me connections much faster for some reason.  Just my 2 bitcents

No, that is completely random.  Mining does not affect your P2P connectivity.

'Generate Coins' has been removed in recent versions, anyway.

Two workarounds:

1) Patience:  Wait a long time, possibly several hours.

2) Try the 0.3.23 release candidate, which attempts to address this problem.

The network has been flooded with new users, many of whom do not support incoming connections.  This causes a problem with the P2P code in versions <= 0.3.22.

That did it, great, thanks!

I waited about half an hour and it remained at 0 connections. I'm also not behind a firewall/NAT that causes trouble on other similar web applications.

i recall sitting there and staring at a fresh install and seeing 0 connections. after a while it started reaching
out and working. i imagine some patience is in order.

if you are behind a firewall or NAT router the first connection will take quite a while.
