Fixed it with -noirc flag when running - must be that my machine is blocking irc for some reason, not that I've ever run IRC on this thing.
I got it from Sourceforge.net - unless that site has been hacked, I'd be surprised if this was the case.
Sounds like the Bitcoin client you have might be a virus or some kind of malware. It detected you were on too secure of an operating system and so will not work right. Redownload maybe.
I'm trying to run bitcoin on a windows XP machine. The gui opens and shuts quickly and then dies. The daemon pretty much does the same.
