Really. There was a ddos attack on this forum, when? And by the way, I don't think anyone in the world has the power to take down google.
Bitcointalk was DDOSed several times in the past. At one instance, the attacker used a malicious SSL certificate to capture the information, DDOS attacks were most probably used to mask this.

Bitcointalk does not use cloudflare or any other DDOS protection since the provider can potentially do a MITM attack. There are hardware to filter attacks but it would be great if they have various other servers with huge bandwidth to dilute the attack.

Who the hell would attack a forum, especially this site.

You get Perma banned if you did.

So can any of you geniuses tell me how one would acquire enough badwidth to DDoS any site these days given the advancement in technology over the years to easily block such vile activity?

~BCX~
Botnets, "server test" services, heck even cloudflare is easy to bypass. There is nothing you can't bypass in Computers, its just a matter of time.

Botnets, nothing but imagination.

Server test sites LOL

Cloudfare - Not gonna get past it.

Where do you get your haxxor skillz?

~BCX~
Bro are you trolling? botnets are real, very real
Server test sites are very real, try booter.org or booter.xyz and attack yourself or your own site
Cloudflare is nothing, just need a good resolver

Botnets are a figment of people's imagination.

Everyone claims they know someone that runs botnets.

No one can name them.

That's why unicorn like botnet herders are never caught, they don't exist.

Server issues, bad configurations, switch issues, Routers....ISP issues, load balance problems are diagnosed as DDoS and Botnets wrongfully.

Always seemed low-tech and pointless to use booter sites, kind of script-kiddy, no? Although I am sure there more advanced forms of DoS attacks out there.

EDIT: As for cloudfare, many ways around that or you could try old-fashioned brute forcing DNS I guess.

why not DDoS something like Googletm instead?

A better suggestion would have been facebook, that is one site that if properly DDOS'ed would really wreck peoples lives.
People have come to waste more then 50% of there time by reading garbage and nonsence that other people write on there.

If these people were looking to ddos something to affect people then they would definitely choose a target like that, but in this case its a bunch of low life kids with nothing better to do and no real money or hardware to perform something so large as that they need to attack smaller sites that mean something.

Why does the big fish pick on the little fish rather then protect him? Easy score?

I have always wondered this too.

Most of the times in the past it seems to have happened at times of market turmoil.

So it could possibly be just increased organic traffic, or a weird attempt of causing uncertainty by blocking one of the main communication channels in the Bitcoin world

I can see why this place "should" be ddosed. Posting address's to where underage kids live, doesn't sit well with me. Especially having it done to me and by forum members here. People shouldn't ddos and do illegal things like this forum does. Your best bet is going to law enforcement, similar to how this website is forcing me, to in fact get my innocent family members address n info off this site.

Just because Bitcoin is anonymous somewhat, doesn't mean the owners here nor admins are. And are in fact liable.

No offense, you shouldn't really ask silly questions when the answers for them are in the history search query on this site. The people at the top are running the schemes < while shit turds like me at the bottom who are honest never prosper. But that's life seeing Satan the prince of the air owns this planet, the more bad you do on earth the more you prosper. I just outright won't play the game.

Admins to this site have dug very deep holes.

There are lots of people with a shit load of money on here, some early adopters are rich AF.
A DDOS attack could enable them to gain access to people's accounts, PM's & all sorts of sensitive information.

There would be a whole lot to gain & nothing to lose for talented hackers unfortunately.

Nope thats not how (D)DoS attacks work, it litteraly means denial of service. If access to the service is denied it is for everyone so there is nothing to gain, but a site that cant be reached. It was argued whether this should be allowed as some form of online protest. If 100's of people gather in front of a store they essentially deny access to the store as well.

So DoS may be an accepted way of "peaceful protest" in the future. DoS attacks do not get any information from the servers: excluding what they send! Many computers connected to many networks in order to continue "pinging" the server in order to render the server disfunctional while the attack is going. This will ony happen if the data cables are not large enough to handle it or the server's CPU is unable to handle the requests!

DoS is not peaceful in anyway.  Peaceful would not be trying to bring down a site so someone cant get to it, or cause others issues.

But it is right DoS is not going to be used for getting info.  It's would make connection impossible if you bring down site... so if successful no info will be gotten.  For info they normally would want to be quiet and would like to be secretly on website.

My question: why would someone o it on the forum?

Most DDoS attacks are pointless. There is no logical reason behind it except doing it for "fun". Some could it it for grudge because they were banned. On higher levels, some market manipulators could attach bitcointalk to stop the flow of information, to buy time for their operations. Who knows for sure?  Undecided

It's not really about power. You might want to read this article https://blog.cloudflare.com/the-ddos-that-almost-broke-the-internet/ the name speaks for itself.

When did this forum get ddos attacked. People like to attack small websites like Bitcointalk. Btw, no one is going to be able to take down google.

My question: why would someone o it on the forum?

Same reason as for exchanges, pools etc - extortion. Lose short term income while the site is down (no ads) and long term patronage.... or pay me.

Going a little off the deep into tin foil land aren't we?

DDoS is way over diagnosed for server issues, ISP problems and IT Staff incompetence.

~BCX~

It may be way over diagnosed.  But most of the time it's done is for a reason.  Normally trolls wanting to hurt someone or like dogie said money.

Either one is bad.  Just different kinds of scum out there some are in it for money other's are the "Lolz".

With this site being one of the most visited BTC sites it would not surprise me if they get lot's of attacks and chances are we don't even notice most of them. This site does put up money to to find people if bad enough.  I forget amount but during that last big hack they offered money for info leading to who did it.  Cant remember how much but it was sizable.

He asked why things are DDOSed, I explained the reasons why things are DDOsed. There is no conspiracy involved.

First of all, I know that a denial of service attack is supposed to affect the memebers of that website and, thus, temporarly take down a website.
My question: why would someone o it on the forum?
Trolling? Script kiddies etc love DDoSing a site.
had only a few thousand members.
Waiiiit a minute, have you checked the site stats yet? Right at this moment over 2k are online, and the site has over 1000000 pageviews per day
why not DDoS something like Googletm instead?
Cause they can't

On the first attack, there were only a few thousand members on the forum.

If 2000 are live now, it will only affect 2000 people! (actually 1990 as the other 10 are sites running scripts to archive the website, or do other things to it!)
Depends on how long the attack lasts, also, there are alot of people lurking here without having created an account

Why would someone take down a forum, that, then, had only a few thousand members. If they wanted to affect many people, why not DDoS something like Googletm instead?
Forums are normally centres to online communities (like bitcointalk to bitcoin) if you take the forum down you affect the entire community, also no-one can produce enough power to take down google
