OP, there's one frequent phrase that says, "dress the way you want to be addressed." If, for example, you dress like a thief & was passing through an area and perhaps the police are on patrol in that same area because a crime activity has taken place there, don't you think that the police will stop you for questioning?

So, now, should I guess that your dressing code really did attract the police to you or something else that actually gave you a red flag in the minds of the policemen?

Note: I am not saying it could be any of the reasons, but believe me, there are a lot of crypto currency users in Nigeria who are not being harassed by the policemen.

Also, I had to figure out that the Yahoo boys you are talking about are referring to fraudsters and scammers, but really, the same issue exists in other countries too, and the government usually has ways of controlling such situations by involving some organizations or training people who do professional jobs to investigate crimes and fraudulent activities.

OP this had to do with bitcoin so I had to drop it here on this broad that those officer’s were very wrong by collecting my phone he should have trusted me when I told him I was into bitcoin that sample as that most officer take advantage of bitcoin holder’s  in the country
About dressing how do yahoo boy do dress because all I no was that I was wearing a black shirt and a black jeans and a face cap to my I gist that was not a wrong dressing OP.

I think you’re not telling the whole story here. What prompted the search and questioning? Were you driving? Were you the only one/student that was questioned? It’s not unlike the police to question individuals they find suspicious, scammers like to flaunt their expensive lifestyle - using expensive phones, cars e.t.c You can’t really blame the police if they stereotype people who fit this profile as scammers.

This so called Nigerians yahoo! yahoo! Boy?s have made the government put an eyes on young guys making money at an young age,
Can you take a look at this how an officer of the law stop me at the high was when going to class and was asking me if I scam people for a living and I just told him I am into bitcoin trading and investment so he ask to see my phone, so I said to him officer there is nothing on my phone, so I showed him my phone it was an apple product and the  officer shouted and said that I?m a yahoo boy just because of the costly phone I was using this was to hard for me to take I try to explain that I am not a scammer so I showed him my phone and I left.
Guy the so called yahoo boy have painted  our names with the wrong color this was very embarrassing to me
This was a very big shame to me.

why do you have to reveal your bitcoin ownership, there are many reasons that you actually use to avoid the officer, one of which is by saying that the smartphone you produced was from your part-time job, in developing countries, the safety of Bitcoin holders is really threatened, especially if there are so There is a lot of unemployment appearing in many areas at the moment, so don't ever reveal yourself to other people that you have a lot of money, especially if you have Bitcoin (I say this because there have been so many cases where bitcoin holders were held hostage) danger is lurking around you.

OP you shouldn’t disclose to anyone that you are into bitcoin trading or a bitcoin investor. Even though Nigeria has  changed their negative stance on bitcoin, there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of sensitizing the public and security personnels that Bitcoin is not illegal neither is it used by only scammers. I think you were too hasty to tell the officer about your bitcoin activity, you could have told him you’re a student and show him your id.

BTW this topic belongs to the Nigerian local board.

This whole story is very weird. If someone, even a police officer, randomly stops you on the street asking you whether you scam people or not (who does that?!), why would you even think to tell him you're into bitcoin? That has nothing to do with the question he asked. Why would you give away such important information? If the police officer was trying to extort you money and you tell him you have bitcoin, I'm not sure about you but I wouldn't be safe in your position at that point. And never show your phone to anybody.

I think that police officer really wanted to tease you nothing else than that. By the way a smart person who's in crypto or Bitcoin trading or invest should never tell anyone about it. It's way better to avoid telling anyone even if that person is a police officer. OP, next time if you face a situation like that, you should handle it with care because telling everyone about your Bitcoin activities can be harmful for you.

That is a form of anticipation from the law in your country even though such things are actually not very correct but indeed they also have no other way because it is not intended to denigrate your country in this case but indeed Nigerian syndicates especially in banking fraud issues are very well known even in my country there are still such things so it is still quite natural for law enforcement in your country to immediately conduct spot checks even though things like how it is actually a mistake but indeed if they don't do things like that they will also eventually be troubled because of the rampant fraud that occurs.
With the development of bitcoin in Nigeria, this will indirectly lead to a different life for those who have it so that surely something like this will not be avoided.

No matter where you are in the world, even your social class, going unnoticed is crucial to having a peaceful life.

But we live in a time of snobbery like no other.

By naming bitcoin, this means that this topic has to fall on this board,(!?), it seems to me that you wanted your story here. (snobbery - Topic  Wink. )

The officer was just looking for a way to extort money from you, and you gave him an excuse by telling the police officer that you trade bitcoins and also invest in it, because first bitcoin is not completely legal in Nigeria, and it can raise attention to you especially since bitcoins are not yet completely understood. You would have avoided the whole discussion by simply saying you do some other thing that he can maybe understand, something offline.

I am sure not only your phone that made the officer to interrogate you because nowadays the way young boys dress leaving their jeans trouser below their waist has attracted much eyes on many young men especially the police and other agencies in our country and even when you were stopped and interrogated I will only advised you to dressed well and loot decent.

Whenever you look decent without keeping dreadlock whatever hair styles you wishes to keep there is no time they would stopped you to asked you about if you are a yahoo boy or not. Yes we believed there are yahoo boys who are tricking and robbing people indirectly but that doesn't mean everyone that holds expensive phone is a yahoo boy or girl so to avoid this embarrassment next time avoid having a suspicious look.

Edit..
Please move this topic to 9ja board instead of here.

I condemn search incident. But you cannot deny the fact that a lot of nigerians are actually involved into international scams. Even in my country, a lot of nigerians were arrested by the police who were involved in banking frauds. So the global reputation of Nigeria is going down due to such incidents. It's great to know that the local government is trying to curb such activities. The incident that happened to you are just collateral damage. I know you are furious but it is for greater good to stop the nuisance from the root.

Nigeria is one of the best countries in African continent. I hope they will be able to recover there lost reputation soon enough.

The thing is you should have confidence and making sure you have no skeleton in your cupboard. If what you are doing is legit and you are polite, there is nothing. But most of you guys dress like Yahoo boys is one of the commonest reasons that you are noticed by police officers. A police man as never noticed me before.

But what is funny is about how those boys and some police are friends. That was ones of the reasons EndSARs was a good idea. The good people suffered because they have no money to give to become their friends, while the bad people are their friends as they have something to give like the rich men.

Generally telling people in general that you're into Bitcoin/crypto is bad enough, but it could be far worse when talking with the authorities lol. Make this be a lesson to you because even if you're totally innocent, they can throw random allegations at you if they wanted to.
