Im not sure but I believe Google has a key that can remove any aplication from any internet connected Android phone.

Only the ones bough from Googles Android Market

Thats interesting then. Setting up an Android market with Bitcoin is a great idea. Does Android have any other limitation in the software that can be installed?

Not really, you only need to go to configurations and check "allow installation of non-market applications". I think some US-carriers block that feature on some phones though, but not sure how common that is since I'm from Europe. In that case you would have to root which only a fraction of the users will do. Outside US most phones are unlocked in that respect.

Google Market has automatic updates which are very convenient, so that would be a nice feat.

If we convince only a few % av the devs to jump on it would still be huge. And it could probably be done, I think app developers in general are the type of people that think Bitcoin is a pretty cool idea.

Google continue their slide into being just as evil as every other gatekeeping corporation.

I personally don't see complying with demands to avoid an expensive lawsuit to be "evil".

It's pretty evil not to have told the developer in advance to stop.  It's pretty evil to claim that you are running an open market (openly mocking Apple who police their app store) and yet demonstrably not be running an open market.  It's pretty evil to pull the developers account as well as his apps.

Look: if Sony/Sega/Nintendo had a problem with the developer they should have to take it up with the developer.  Instead they just wave their corporate muscle and Google instantly caves.  There has been no court case to decide if what was being done was truly illegal, and nor will their be.  We don't need courts any more, we've got Google.

Avoiding lawsuits is sensible enough from Google's point of view; but let's not pretend that that makes Google "good".  It's not the caving that I decry, it's the caving while at the same time using a "we're so cool, we would never limit you, not like that evil Apple company" marketing strategy.  At least Apple are honest about their strict policing policies.

A Bitcoin based App Market sounds like an awesome idea. Would also give the Bitcoin economy a real push if done right.

One thing that would be nice for that is if the Bitcoin client would support subscriptions. Basically, a trusted way to send a specific amount to a specific address on a regular basis. The subscription would be active as long as the Bitcoins are received "in time".

Yea, something along the lines of a BITCOIN BANK?

Also the android market idea is awesome as well!

http://www.geek.com/articles/mobile/google-pulls-emulators-from-the-android-market-20110530/

Google continue their slide into being just as evil as every other gatekeeping corporation.

Bitcoin has the potential to fix this problem though.  Google are only necessary in the Android market because they take the money from the customer and distribute it to the developer.  A bitcoin-based market would allow the user to connect directly to the developer.

... which in turn would stop this ridiculous behaviour of removing applications not because they are malicious but because some other corporation doesn't like it.  (In this case it's emulators; next week it could easily be a Bitcoin wallet app).
