Topic: Bitcoin in 2012 - Spreading the word (Read 1973 times)

So not much enthusiasm for this so far. If someone is interested please state it here, I will add your nickname to the OP and just whenever you started a topic somewhere post it here so I will add it to the list. I think it will really help people to start realizing how bitcoin will change e-commerce etc and I think now is a good timing since a huge group of people just had there first exposure to Bitcoin in the latest episode of "The good wife".

Also people are starting to ask merchants about bitcoin(https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=58896.80) which I think really helps the Bitcoin community and I think we should promote in these ways more often. I think it would be a good move to start suggesting http://www.weusecoins.com/ to StumbleUpon, but you need an account to do this here: http://www.stumbleupon.com/submit. I will create a new topic since I think this topic should stick to the ambassador system.


I figured some people already were doing this, but I thought it would be good to start an initiative where everybody is doing this and to get an overview of everybody's work. Could you link some sites where you're doing this so I can edit them into the OP?

What are your experiences at these sites so far? Do you have any comment on the basic format I would like to create here?

Weren't there already feedback items where bitcoin was denied? I do remember so. Because it costs so much energy! And it's so unregulated and uncontrollable! We ze Germans do not like zat you know!!!

I am a member of the German Pirate Party.

A colleague and I have started an initiative in our Liquid Feedback (in German: https://lqfb.piratenpartei.de/pp/initiative/show/2391.html) to

a) accept BTC as donation currency and as currency for membership fees
b) promote BTC as inter-EU currency after having it audited by the #ccc (http://www.ccc.de/en/)
c) promote BTC on a local level and create info desks and helpdesks for the use of BTC
d) demand of the other political parties to also accept and promote BTC

Let's see how this goes.

Do you see yourself as a Bitcoin enthousiast and do you care about the future of Bitcoin? Read this post!

So the year 2012 started for Bitcoin and a lot of promising projects have been set up or are being set up right now. I think this year is probably the most important year for what Bitcoin will mean and be in let's say 10 years.

Bitcoin isn't a company and the succes of Bitcoin will greatly depend on the community(or shareholders) working together to tell the world about Bitcoin and with this in mind I thought about what I/we could mean for Bitcoin and what is important right now.

I think a very good way to do this is to just spread the word of bitcoin and inform people what it is. You don't have to convince them to use it, you don't have to tell them it could be a good investment, just tell them about it and explain what it is and what it is being used for and will be used for and you're helping the community and the future of Bitcoin.

There are various ways in which you can achieve this and probably most of you have told some of your friends or family about Bitcoin. I think it is also smart to ask a merchant whether he will be accepting bitcoins in the future every time you order something online. It costs you 2 seconds of your time and it is -I think- very effective to get merchants to accept bitcoins as Tony Gallippi suggests in his speak at the European Bitcoin Conference(http://tinyurl.com/6og2k9n). My idea I wanna talk about now is to get every Bitcoin enthousiast to start creating topics on forums all over the internet with some basic information. If enough people help with this project which doesn't have to cost a lot of time the effect will be significant at least. See yourself as an ambassador.

I suggest people creating 5 topics per person on different preferably mainstream forums(anywhere the average user didn't hear the word Bitcoin yet)  in their native language and to check up on your topics at least once a week to answer some questions or to give some additional information if asked for and to keep the discussion going.

I think we can create a basic format ambassadors can use to start their topics and I'm asking you all do this in this topic so I can edit this post so people can use it if they would like to! The format should start with basic information most people could understand, but some additional information for interested people should be included if the ambassador thinks the forum is right for it. I suggest 1 basic information level and 2 additional levels: advanced(2) and technical(3) for now. I do think it is smart to keep the post as short as possible by linking people to other places to read more if they're interested.

Possible information level 1:
I think the best way to start is the embedded "What is Bitcoin?"-video: http://tinyurl.com/6swc7gv It looks professional, is fun to watch and is perfect for people not willing to read larger texts.
After this I suggest a brief explanation and summary of Bitcoin following pros and cons and some already availabe applications such as bit-pay for merchants and the bit-pay deposit card demonstration(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UmynaPg8hw&hd=1).
I think the summary should be really easy to understand so this is probably the hardest part.
