Polluting Bitcoin Mines Come to Rural Georgia

Quote
In addition to the carbon emissions contributing to the climate crisis, Bitcoin mines are also very loud, often disturbing nearby residents. Due to the massive computing power used during the mining process, the computers generate substantial amounts of heat and must therefore be cooled to avoid damaging the equipment. Cooling systems often involve industrial-grade fans and air conditioning units that—when combined with the constant operation of mining rigs—result in persistent noise. The relentless hum of these machines can extend far beyond the confines of the mining facilities, unfortunately impacting surrounding neighborhoods.

Communities across the South have experienced this unexpected noisy intrusion into their daily lives, as residents from Arkansas to Tennessee report disruptions right outside their homes. For example, residents of Adel, Georgia have been plagued by nonstop noise from Bitcoin mines. The incessant drone of fans and machinery, often louder than the recommended cap of 70 decibels, goes beyond mere inconvenience: prolonged exposure to loud noise can have negative effects on people’s mental and physical well-being, interfering with sleep schedules, increasing stress levels, and contributing to long-term health issues like cardiovascular disease.

Many of CleanSpark’s facilities in Georgia operate with the same loud air-cooling processes. Thus, the Sandersville mine may bring disruptive noise to nearby residents, and students and faculty at the Oconee Fall Line Technical College, a local community college, that is less than half a mile away. CleanSpark’s Norcross mining site utilizes an immersion cooling system that cools computers through submersion in synthetic oil – a process that reduces the amount of energy used and decreases noise pollution by not relying on fans. Though a quieter and more efficient method, it has so far been limited to the smaller 20 MW site in Norcross.

As CleanSpark announces a planned expansion of the Sandersville site—a $145 million deal to double the fleet’s mining capacity for a “massive 150 MW expansion”—there could be more noise and disruption in store for residents.

Electricity consumption of the bitcoin network since 2016 (annualized) and comparison with the electricity consumption of various countries in 2019. The upper and lower bounds (grey traces) are based on worst-case and best-case scenario assumptions, respectively. The red trace indicates an intermediate best-guess estimate.

1. Most of that energy comes from green sources.
2. Even the waste product of bitcoin mining, heat, can be used for heating homes during the winter.

There is no energy wasted in Bitcoin mining. What goes in, also goes out of the system.

You know, you could utilize those waste products too, but I think CoinGeek and co. are too ignorant to do anything with ESG.

OP I don't know why a toxic stupid idiot like you is still doing here in this forum. Your claims are a bunch of nonsense BS. What does it benefit you here? Wasting your time and energy as a keyboard warrior posting negative stuff about the unstoppable Bitcoin?

You can't change the whole world buddy. BTC can't be stopped no matter if it falls down several times whether in the financial or environmental side. It's unbeatable. Not even the governments and banks can stop or control it.

I hope you don't use a car nor ride a bus for your transportation. You must be riding a bicycle or a tesla on your regular transportation. However it's also made of materials that were mined using energy that emits high carbon. The future is green energy and bitcoin can also mined thru green energy. But even current bitcoin mining is still nothing and very small compared to huge carbon emissions from factories and daily activities like cars.
The problem is that, even if you end up using your electric car, that means you are going to "charge" it instead of put oil in it, well if that electricity that you charge your car with comes from something bad for the environment then it's bad too, doesn't really have any difference at all with regular petrol cars.

This means it is not about using bitcoin, or using cars, or using anything, it is about where the electricity that we use comes from, no matter what we use it for. People think that bitcoin energy spending means bad thing, no, where that energy comes from makes it bad or good. I personally believe as long as we "ban" oil and freaking and what not, and put trillions and trillions from ALL nations into renewable, then we would be fine in just under 10 years.

There are tons of comparisons between Bitcoin mining versus other day to day use, and the power consumption of Bitcoin mining is very VERY small in comparison, it's almost nothing.

Check this one for instance:

BitcoinSV maximalists are even trying?, at least come up with something that is not so easy to disprove with shitload of data and charts.

good chart.  now add in the fact that a ton of solar arrays are created specifically due to mining coins. the ratio is larger than the image

it the 79 is lower since maybe ⅓ is offset by new solar made for mining.

Wtf are you talking about.

oil burning and coal burning  since 1900 has to be 999999 not btc and 1 btc.

btc does 220eh at 50 watts a th.

this is 220000000th x 50 = 1,100,000,000 watts an hour or 1,100 megawatts an hour.

about the same as 26,400 meagwatts a day

but world output is  25,000,000 mega watts a day

so btc is 1/1000 of the worlds power.

and of course you leave out that  from 1900 to 2009 btc burned 0

and you leave out how much mega watts in solar are funded by btc.

my partner fourm member buysolar and i have made 500 kwatts of solar arrays. they generate over 5 megawatts a day. buysolar has built 50 megawatts of arrays in NJ  Some of them like ours were fully financed by btc.

So lets say a minimum of 10 megawatts daily are being generated by us because of btc.

We are not a giant solar company. Just one of many in New Jersey.

New Jersey added 3800 mega watts  of solar last year.

A lot is because of btc. It is a big tool for getting solar built.

Everything and everyone in this world evolve, so does bitcoin, there was a time when mining cost of Bitcoin was far lower than what is today. However as the cost of mining has soared. This debate has been in public space for quite some time. Firstly I think there is solution to every problem. Maybe Bitcoin too will move into proof of stake concept in future or something else. However for now we have to eat the cost. It's as simple as that. No ifs and buts..

It is not only Bitcoin that is an environmental menace. Everything that uses electricity is an environmental menace. But we need to develop sustainable energy that doesn't emit greenhouse emissions. This should be the goal. Not villianise Bitcoin for killing the environment.

But the fact that we are not pursuing sustainable energy - this is true. This needs to change.

whatever other members' responses about bitcoin the OP will still deny it because he is a Craig Steven Wright cult group with Bitcoin SV which he says is the real Bitcoin. For some reason it always attacks bitcoin, even though Bitcoin SV was born from a bitcoin fork and uses the name "Bitcoin". This kind of FUD is intentionally made for the bitcoin community, but I don't think there's any point in making this kind of FUD, because everyone today is smart and can discern the hidden intentions and hidden goals of Craig Steven Wright's loyal followers.

Bitcoin is a pollution-creating mess

Few statistics on the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining
-Bitcoin uses more renewable energy than most countries
-Bitcoin mining is currently estimated to account for about 0.5% of global electricity consumption
-Now Bitcoin has a carbon footprint equivalent to Greece
-Only seven mining companies own almost 80% of all computer power on the network
-Bitcoin mining currently uses 66 times more electricity than in 2015
-In 2009 the cost of mining took a few second’s worth of household electricity, in 2021 the cost was worth 9 years of household electricity
-A single Bitcoin transaction results in the same carbon footprint as a traveler flying from New York to Amsterdam.

In an article on CNN Business written by Jon Sarlin “Bitcoin is a pollution-creating mess”. Despite efforts to make the energy-intensive mining process friendlier to the environment, it has grown significantly more reliant on fossil fuels over the past year.

China's cryptocurrency mining ban in the spring of 2021 significantly worsened Bitcoin's environmental impact, according to a new research on mining published in Joule. It is because Bitcoin miners were tapping into a significant amount of Chinese hydropower which suddenly evaporated when China made mining illegal, said Alex de Vries, one of the study's authors and a researcher at the School of Business and Economics at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

So miners took their business elsewhere, including countries using significantly dirtier energy than China. Electricity sources powering the Bitcoin network were just 25.1% renewable in August 2021, nearly 17 percentage points lower than the 2020 average.

Mining Bitcoin each year produces as much pollution as Greece created in 2019, the study found. A single Bitcoin transaction results in the same carbon footprint as a traveler flying from New York to Amsterdam.

"After China banned Bitcoin mining, everyone was expecting it to become more green, but we are somewhat surprisingly seeing the opposite happening." said de Vries. "A lot of the hydropower these miners got previously in China has now been replaced with natural gas from the US."

Bitcoin mining is still booming in the United States. According to the study, many of the American Bitcoin mines are powered by natural gas and coal. Kentucky now offers subsidies to crypto miners, looking to attract business for the state's coal industry.

Kazakhstan has also become a destination for Bitcoin miners. According to the study, the country's electricity grid is reliant on hard coal, which is even more polluting than the coal used in China.

The hydropower behind China's Bitcoin mines was often held up by cryptocurrency advocates to rebut criticism about the technology's environmental impact.

In May, Coinbase — one of the largest cryptocurrency marketplaces — published a "fact check" citing China's hydroelectric plants in trying to undermine the idea Bitcoin contributed to climate change.

Coinbase did not respond to CNN's questions on whether it stood by its fact check in light of China's cryptocurrency crackdown, but said in a statement it believes "the industry is innovating at an encouraging pace to solve these challenges... Community-led change is possible and crypto can be part of the fight against climate change if we come together to solve these challenges."

What is Bitcoin Mining?
In short, Bitcoin mining is the process of creating, or ‘winning’, new Bitcoins by solving increasingly difficult mathematical puzzles - a process called proof-of-work (PoW). While at its beginnings these puzzles could be solved with normal computers (CPUs), Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, designed a system where over time, as competition for Bitcoin mining grew, the mathematical puzzles would become more difficult to solve. Therefore, over the past decade, as the price of Bitcoin - and the possible profit from mining them - has skyrocketed, better technology has become indispensable to solve these puzzles.

Miners now use specialised computers, called ASIC systems, that are much more efficient per attempt (or hash) of the puzzle - therefore increasing the likelihood of being the first to solve the puzzle and reaping the newly mined Bitcoin, but also increasing the amount of energy required to power these computers.

ASIC systems, although more energy efficient than normal computers, require more electricity since they are typically kept running incessantly, and also require energy to cool down the hardware to prevent from overheating, either with internal fans or with air conditioning.

How long does it take to mine one Bitcoin?
The answer to this question is not as straightforward as one might think as the procedure is becoming more complex and requires so much processing power.

However, there is a Bitcoin mining calculator called the NiceHash calculator that may help you better understand. It will not tell you directly how long it will take to mine 1 Bitcoin but there is an easy way to find out. Go to the calculator, select which mining rig you’re going to use and then increase the number of devices until you can see that you’re earning 1 Bitcoin per month.

For example, based on the current hash rate it would take fourteen S19 Pros to mine 1 Bitcoin per month. Or, put differently, one S19 Pro could mine 1 Bitcoin in 14 months (not accounting for a rise in hash rate over time).

This calculator is the easiest way to figure out how long it will take you to mine 1 Bitcoin.

No problem, give us supply from hydro electric power and other natural sources we are fine with it unless and until the power is not steady. Since school days I’m learning that we are getting affected with the green house effect, I’m wondering how come they have not done anything since last 15 years! In fact they increased car production, rocket launches, number of flights increased and guess what everyone has air conditioners in their homes from developing countries as well. They are direct miners of CO2 and fumigations. Come on this is really question of for how long and what’s the alternate solutions. (Also I thought china does not mine anymore after their ban)

OP is a funny man who is only entertaining ideas and opinions that are against Bitcoin. Now, he should be aware that if people will be rejecting Bitcoin for any reason they are rejecting the whole of cryptocurrency and BSV is still part of this industry which means it would be rejected too. In fact, when BTC is falling down, there is more chance that the value of BSV is doing the same thing as it is not detached from the whole industry. Of course, OP will all be silent or probably be looking for another reason of attack once the crypto winter is over...and it would be over based on the history of Bitcoin. My next question is: How come BSV has not overtaken BTC yet in many areas if it is really superior to the latter?

Wake up! Blind fools!
there's no point in you screaming about this FUD because those who are already in love with bitcoin will find it hard to hate it.  based on the weather forecast agency report in my country, my country has a fairly high level of pollution and none of it is caused by Bitcoin (though there are many bitcoin miners here)
Judging from the environmental impact caused by mining BTC is a very strange thing, because for some countries and especially countries in Asia really consider this as a joke smart people as a whole. because for countries in Asia, the nature that exists can still be called a paradise to enjoy the air, and consider BTC miners as a natural thing. even for gold miners it is blatantly a bad deed and can have dire consequences for countries that do it greedily without regard for healthy nature.
So, if the media continues to release stupid debates like this, then I consider it something that has ulterior motives because of its free nature.

I often hear the massive Fuds like the expression, even Haters will continue to look for reasons to say that Bitcoin is not worthy of appreciated, but a strong community makes things more creative, carbon pollution of the world is certainly from the industry I'm sure if all world pollution in data then bicoin Mining is no more than 0.00000001%.
but we cannot allow the consumption of energy using fossil fuels to continue to be so high because this will accelerate the energy crisis in the future and as the best solution we must switch to renewable energy which is of course environmentally friendly so that mining is no longer the reason for many countries and some people to narrow the progress of bitcoin
although it's difficult but I'm sure bitcoin will be able to pass this challenge

BTC continues to be more secure than any other PoW coin.  For that reason, it will outlast the multitude of cheap imitations out there.
Yeah, it is not about PoW being great that makes Bitcoin the most secure and consistent chain, it is bitcoin that is doing it itself. There are other PoW systems out there which are not as strong or secure as bitcoin, which is a proof that PoW itself is not the reason for it, if it was then other chains would have been as secure as well. We are goign to see a PoS with ETH and see how they will do, if they do great then it will be great for them, if they do terrible then it would be another proof that PoS is not the solution.

There is nothing wrong with asking to get more greener, we just haven't found a way to do that just yet, as soon as we find a method that is as secure and more green then we would probably move there.

It can't be.  Market forces determine everything.  No one is choosing for Bitcoin to have a higher hashrate than any other coin.  That's just something that naturally occurs when a coin is actually worth mining.  Undesirable shitcoins can claim to be "green", but that's merely a side effect of being worthless trash that no one can be bothered mining for.

Biden to Order Federal Agencies to Study Cryptocurrency Impacts

Quote
On March 9, President Biden will sign a long-awaited executive order instructing federal agencies to study various impacts of cryptocurrency use. The order will task regulators with reviewing risks to consumers, investors, and the economy at large. Following the study period, which will be ongoing for several months, federal agencies will prepare reports based on their findings. The White House will then use those findings in any new regulatory actions in the future.

The cryptocurrency market has grown to about $1.75 trillion in value in the span of just over a decade. Roughly 40 million adult Americans have participated in the digital currency market in some way, making this no longer a space for niche investors.

  • President Biden's March 9 executive order will task federal agencies with considering the impact of cryptocurrencies on U.S. sanctions, the environment, and other areas of concern.
  • Federal agencies will report findings to the White House in the coming months, with additional regulatory measures potentially to follow.
  • The order aims to support innovation while stemming risks to the individual investor, to businesses, and to the broader economy.
  • The order will also formally launch an investigation into the possible launch of a Federal Reserve-backed U.S. digital currency.

Concerns About Sanctions, Environmental Impact
In a Treasury Department statement issued ahead of the executive order, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the order will facilitate responsible innovation in the cryptocurrency space and will also address risks. President Biden's administration is expected to study how digital currencies may negatively affect U.S. sanctions and anti-money laundering efforts. These issues have become especially prominent in recent weeks as the U.S. has imposed sanctions on Russia following the latter's invasion of Ukraine.

The order will also launch a study of the environmental and climate impacts of cryptocurrency mining. The mining process is notoriously energy-intensive in many cases.

That ridiculous. Hashrate of BTC is growing. BTC is not green. Greedy BTC miners are carbon terrorists! BTC is environmental menace.

I hope we could find a totally objective and comprehensive data on how green or not Bitcoin mining is. So far, anti-Bitcoin could cite data that would serve their purpose while pro-Bitcoin could also cite data that would serve theirs.

On the other hand, pro-Bitcoin has been arguing that its energy consumption is somehow justified because that's the way to make sure transactions are secured and are impossible to tamper. In the same manner that tumble drying, which has a higher carbon emission than Bitcoin, is justified because it's the most efficient way to dry clothes. Grin

  • The solution is to force Bitcoin miners (and everyone else) to stop using fossil fuels to generate the electricity that they use.
  • Bitcoin's high energy usage is due entirely to its incredible success. Bitcoin SV is greener only because it is a dead coin.

European Union is on Track to Ban Bitcoin

Yeah, that didn't last long.

Bitcoin mining is turning green. But the point is, what is not an environmental menace nowadays? Your food is an environmental menace. Your clothes are an environmental menace. Your gadgets are an environmental menace. Your house, furniture, car, bicycle, lamp, carpet, and everything else are an environmental menace. Your hobby is an environmental menace. You know what, humans are an environmental menace. But, again, Bitcoin is turning green.

This Shit Vision scammer had gone off the radar for some time. Looks like its back again with the same old agenda. The BSV scammers definitely have a very well-paid PR team. Despite getting shat upon almost everywhere including twitter, they seem to have a knack for making up new websites to give BSV a veneer of being legit.

I wonder if its the same person behind the account now or just another paid sock-puppet posting his lying master's bullshit.

After failing to convince anyone of the legitimacy of BSV, they seem to want to play the environment card. Well, at scaled TPS, every PoW crypto will be the same. Even if changes are made, they can be incorporated into Bitcoin. Nobody needs a scammer like CSW to tell the community what to do or believe in. The community chose a long time ago when every respectable figure rejected BSV and that scammer.

Just take your shit away.

Bitcoin mining is actually worse for the environment since China banned it, a new study says

Quote
Despite a crackdown on Bitcoin in China last year, mining the largest cryptocurrency actually got much dirtier and emits around the same amount of CO2 annually as a country the size of Greece, a new study shows.

The joint study, titled Revisiting Bitcoin's Carbon Footprint, showed that the share of renewable electricity sources that fuel the Bitcoin network may have decreased from an average of 41.6 per cent in 2020 to 25.1 per cent in August 2021.

It also showed Bitcoin could be responsible for 65.4 megatonnes of CO2 annually, which is comparable to country-level emissions in Greece.

In May 2021, Chinese authorities ordered a crackdown on crypto mining and trading and regulators banned financial institutions from offering services related to cryptocurrencies.

As a result, many miners fled to Kazakhstan and the United States.

One of the reasons for the decline in renewable energy sources powering Bitcoin mining is because the Bitcoin network no longer had access to hydropower from the Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan, said Alex de Vries, one of the authors of the study and a researcher at the School of Business and Economics at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.

"The reason why they had that amount of renewables was because within China, they could move around and they could get hydropower during the summer months and then in the winter months, they would be using coal," he told Euronews Next.

Looking at Bitcoin and comparing to other digital assets based on CO2 emissions and the amount of energy used for hashing, BSV is the overall greenest.

Power consumption is the price you pay for security.  And this is the alternative price you pay if you don't have a secure network.  I know which one I'd rather have.

Arguably, transacting on weak and insecure blockchains is a bigger waste of energy.  Like squandering money constructing something expensive on a known sinkhole or bog.  BSV scamcoin is an utter waste of time/effort/energy/money.  Not green in the slightest.  It's basically just pissing resources up the wall to talk a big game when you aren't actually achieving anything (aside from painting a target on your arse).

Not to mention the part where the entire scamcoin project is part of an ongoing fraud to support a renowned identity thief who has declared war on this very community.  You and all your supporters are scum.

Tesla’s Kimbal Musk says company was ‘very ignorant’ of environmental impact of its Bitcoin purchase

In an interview with TechCrunch onstage at the Ethereum Denver conference, Tesla board member Kimbal Musk, brother of CEO Elon Musk, said that the company had been “very ignorant” of the environmental impact of Bitcoin when it announced last year that it would purchase $1.5 billion worth of the cryptocurrency and would plan to allow owners to purchase the company’s vehicles with the currency.

When we invested in Bitcoin, we were very ignorant. We had no idea of the environmental impact, we literally didn’t know, we were like this seems like a good store of value and a good way to diversify assets. And of course, it didn’t take very long to get a million — I’m not kidding probably a million — messages telling us what we were doing to the environment,” said Kimbal Musk, in an interview with this reporter. “And of course, our company is about creating alternative energy futures so we really were not informed enough when we made that decision.”

Kimbal Musk says that while Tesla “didn’t necessarily regret” its Bitcoin purchase, he hopes that the broader blockchain industry can move to more environmentally friendly infrastructure, noting that his own philanthropic organization Big Green had embraced a crypto-native DAO governance structure operating on a less energy-intensive blockchain.

“I really do not agree with the environmental impact of crypto, but I love what it does.” Kimbal Musk said onstage. “So we’ve just got to figure out how to do it without the environmental impact…. it’s simply not an option to have this environmental impact.”

Tesla’s decision to buy Bitcoin last year prompted a major bull run for the cryptocurrency, though that surge was famously reversed months later by the company’s announcement that while it did not immediately plan to sell its Bitcoin, it would no longer be accepting Bitcoin as payment for vehicle purchases.

Cryptocurrency is a good idea on many levels and we believe it has a promising future, but this cannot come at a great cost to the environment,” Elon Musk wrote, partially, in a tweet last May. “Tesla will not be selling any bitcoin and we intend to use it for transactions as soon as mining transitions to more sustainable energy.”

While there is still plenty of missing data around how heavily the Bitcoin mining network relies on renewable energy sources, it is clear just how significant the network’s energy usage is. Estimates from Digiconomist‘s energy tracker suggest that the total annualized energy footprint of Bitcoin’s mining operations has nearly doubled since Musk’s tweet last May. The Bitcoin network contributes as much carbon to the atmosphere as the country of Kuwait does on an annual basis according to the site’s estimates.

Kimbal Musk has served on Tesla’s board since 2004.

European Union is on Track to Ban Bitcoin

According to a surprise report published by the German cryptocurrency media agency BTC-ECHO, the European Parliament, one of the legislative branches of the European Union, has plans to ban Bitcoin and other proof-of-work (PoW) cryptocurrencies.

The final draft of the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory framework, the much-anticipated package of cryptocurrency regulations, includes a specific provision that makes illegal the “environmentally unsustainable” consensus mechanism.

What does this mean? This means that Bitcoin could become illegal within the countries of the European Union starting from Jan. 1, 2025.

Businesses in EU would be prohibited from offering any services associated with ‘proof-of-work’ cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin.

Stefan Berger, the center-right rapporteur behind the framework, told the media that the proposal was “very likely” to be greenlit, because it has overwhelming support from both sides.

The regulation was pushed by center-left Social Democrats, the Greens and the Left Party. Some Christian Democrats and right-wing conservatives opposed the addition of the Bitcoin ban, but it was a deal-breaker for the parties that supported cracking down on proof-of-work.

The European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, will now engage in a trialogue with the member states and the Parliament before reaching a final decision later this year.

Less emissions and lower energy usage make it one of the cleanest on the blockchain.

So, you crawl out from the altcoins boards and post a topic in Bitcoin Discussion with the deliberate intent to draw attention to the fact that your forkcoin can supposedly only do one thing remotely well?  And even if it is true, it is largely outside of your direct control anyway, so it's not really even your accomplishment.  Are you sure it's a good idea to highlight by omission that your worthless scamcoin is completely useless at anything else?  I mean... I've heard of "playing to your strengths", but all this does is shine a spotlight on all the things you can't boast about.  Personally, I think it makes you and your scummy project look desperate and weak.  But then, so do most of the things you do on this forum.  Roll Eyes

ASICs can’t be easily repurposed for general computing. Redundant units create around 11,500 tonnes of hazardous electronic waste each year, much of which is dumped on cities in the global south.

Which is like a grain of sand in a sandbox.
I'm not even going to argue if this is a right number, but for people who think 11k tonnes a year is a lot:
China, the largest producer of electronic waste in the world creates 10 million tonnes every year, the US 7 million.
Worldwide more than 50 million tonnes of electronic waste is produced every year.

You can find these statistics online with ease on multiple sites.

I'd rather if an average household threw out 10kg of electronic trash in the form of Bitcoin miners and support unconfiscatable, censorship-resistant money, than 50kg because they got bored by their 50" TV and need a 60".

Actually I think this is just a classic reason that is always exaggerated.
Since I haven't been in bitcoin until now I'm here the reasons for environmental threats are still one of the reasons people dislike bitcoin.
Whereas on the other hand there are now many companies that actually produce B3 waste which is classified as a type of waste that is very dangerous for the environment.
I think if we bother thinking about bitcoin being harmful to the environment then B3 there is much more dangerous and who said bitcoin is dangerous not thinking about this?

I see things like this and I ask if it's the only one out there. Secondly, bitcoin is just a decade and a year or 2 years old and suddenly, it feels the like the environmental menace just started. I wonder where crude refining has been and other activities that results in the production of hydrocarbon.

Anyway, bitcoin shouldn't be taking the front line of this, it's just pure hatred on the system and the fact that, government and individuals fronting this aren't at the end point of it all. Should they be, I'm sure all that would be forgotten.

No one is saying that it's not an issue for the environment, we are all aware of that. One of the big factors for its longevity is that it addresses its impact on the environment and in a growing increase in environmental awareness, it's something that it has to tackle sometime in the future. Maybe it could go the Norway route where it's investing in the environment after it got it's money from harming the environment with fossil fuels. It's a strange situation.

On the contrary alot of people seems to castigate against what they don't admire and in this case, is the commendations coming from bitcoin enthusiast or those that are against it, naturally man tends to develop a kind of pleasure to what they don't like, bitcoin already is contributing to solving world inefficient energy wasted through the use of a renewable energy while providing another solution to environmental degradation, and with or without bitcoin energy consumption the total amount of waste energy globally remains constant and bitcoin has not come to constitute more loss to this but rather solve part of the menace through renewable energy.

The cars emits a lot pollution as well, did we stop using them and the trucks? No ! Most of the things that we use have some probelms concerned with the environment and we have to understand that the developed nations and other industrial countries are not making it any easier on the environment. We do know that the green mining is just a small portion, But we can hope with projects like El Salvador for more people to take it on. At the same time right now we don't really have a system that can tackle the financial probelms that everyone is facing right now and thus needs bitcoins in every sense, it's a necessity for the moment, plus soon they will stop mining coins and the mining energy would be more concerned with taking transactions back and forth, the small miners will disappear because of all the competition but at the end of the day, the big companies would have to follow green rules and thus make things more sustainable inevitably.

The threat to the environment has existed since we (all people in developed and developing countries) switched to an industrial way of producing something. As soon as this happened, the inevitable process of chasing profits began, and against the backdrop of ever-increasing competition in the global economy, there are no prerequisites to hope that this process will be stopped or slowed down. And, of course, all this has been happening so long ago that the person who invented bitcoin (whoever he or they may be) had not yet been born. So all this is nonsense.

Globally, Bitcoin’s power consumption has dire implications for climate change and achieving the goals of the Paris Accord because it translates into an estimated 22 to 22.9 million metric tons of CO2 emissions each year—equivalent to the CO2 emissions from the energy use of 2.6 to 2.7 billion homes for one year. One study warned that Bitcoin could push global warming beyond 2°C. Another estimated that bitcoin mining in China alone could generate 130 million metric tons of CO2 by 2024. With more mining moving to the U.S. and other countries, however, this amount could grow even larger unless more renewable energy is used.

Bitcoin isn’t getting greener: four environmental myths about cryptocurrency debunked

Myth one: bitcoin mining is becoming more efficient

Bitcoin’s carbon emissions are not the network’s only dirty secret. In 2011, competing miners could win the bitcoin bingo with an average laptop. Today, viable operations require investing in warehouses filled with specialised hardware known as Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC). As the majority of mining costs come from energy to run these units, bitcoin miners are always careful to use the cheapest. To avoid wasting energy, the global arms race for bitcoin requires ASICs to be replaced for newer and more efficient models every year.

ASICs can’t be easily repurposed for general computing. Redundant units create around 11,500 tonnes of hazardous electronic waste each year, much of which is dumped on cities in the global south.

Myth two: bitcoin encourages investment in clean energy

Chinese hydroelectric power plants are popular spots for bitcoin mining. While China cracks down on the industry, 61% of bitcoin mining is powered by fossil fuels.

Cheap coal in Australia has found new buyers through bitcoin, as formerly redundant coal mines are reopened to power mining. Miners are willing to move anywhere for residual energy, increasing the profitability of natural gas in Siberia and supporting oil drilling in Texas.

In Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, bitcoin miners are getting special access to cheap, clean energy produced by an EU-funded hydroelectric plant. The plant was designed to help locals find livelihoods beyond poaching and stop them resorting to scouring parkland for wood fuel. Bitcoin miners employ armies of computer servers, not the ex-combatants the plant could help.

Myth three: bitcoin replaces the need for gold mining

Gold mining is one of the world’s most destructive industries. Bitcoin was originally intended as a digital replacement for gold that was also a deflationary means of exchange, capable of rendering wasteful banks and regulators redundant.

But for many institutional investors, gold is being bought to hedge against bitcoin’s volatility. Tesla poured US$1.5 billion into bitcoin, but also declared an interest in gold. While bitcoin is currently experiencing all-time price highs, gold hit one of its own in 2020.

Nor has bitcoin displaced traditional finance institutions. Major banks are vying to get very rich indeed on the back of it.

Myth four: corporate players will boost market for ‘green bitcoin’

Some argue that institutional investors can turn bitcoin green. Yves Bennaim, the founder of Swiss cryptocurrency think tank 2B4CH, claims that as investors like Tesla push prices up, “there will be more incentive to make investments in renewable sources of energy” for bitcoin mining. But miners will always use the cheapest option to maximise returns. It’s not possible to allocate additional rewards to miners using renewables, because it’s difficult to know exactly which bitcoin miners use renewables.

Unfortunately, there is currently no such thing as a “green bitcoin”.

Not all cryptocurrencies are as energy-intensive as bitcoin, though. There are alternatives to proof-of-work. The second biggest blockchain project, ethereum, is switching to proof-of-stake, a new system which is supposed to remove the need for data miners and perpetual hardware updates.
