The US keeps imposing new sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear program but they’re not changing Kim Jong Un’s behavior — and for a surprising reason: Pyongyang’s skill at using cryptocurrencies.

Five days ago, America sanctioned dozens of ships, shipping companies, and other firms that allegedly help Pyongyang fund its nuclear and missiles programs. That move is part of a broader US strategy to starve the North Korean regime of money it would use to improve its weapons. The Trump administration wants to make these punishments so severe that Pyongyang would potentially be open to negotiations over the programs.

The problem is North Korea can partially skirt financial restrictions with cryptocurrencies, an online form of money, according to Priscilla Moriuchi, formerly a top National Security Agency official charged with overseeing cyber threats from East Asia.

Moriuchi, who is now at the digital intelligence firm Recorded Future, estimates that North Korea earns between $15 million and $200 million by creating and selling cryptocurrencies and then turning it into hard cash. (Their take fluctuates depending on the digital currency’s worth when North Korea cashes out.) That’s not enough money to fully fund North Korea’s weapons programs, to be sure, but it ensures they don’t completely shut down.

So even though sanctions hurt North Korea’s physical economy, there are currently few ways America can curb Pyongyang’s growing digital economy. That means North Korea has an even greater ability to keep its nuclear program running than we might think.

“I would bet that these coins are being turned into something — currency or physical goods — that are supporting North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile program,” Moriuchi told me

I suppose they had to come up with some excuse.

The true reason for North Korea's ability to carry on is that they are still getting support and aid from China.

north korea actually secretly started to print the so called superdollar decades ago, which is indistinguishable from the standard US dollar, so dont worry, cryptocurrencies cant be blamed but the question is,

who blames bitcoin for the situation in north korea, cant get that out of that article.

Cryoticúrrencies have the potential of ending north koreas current use of their fiat super dollar

Well that's funny because when the falling price of Bitcoin is not being blamed on Japan it's being blamed on South Korea
but I guess the North will do as well.

Must not mention the real reason being fees that have not been forgotten from six weeks ago or the lightning network being a system
of banking being ran and controlled by the BTC miners. lets blame Kim for standing up to the aggression of the Americans
and lets also blame him for buildings just falling down on 9-11 too.

They should create their own currency like the petro and lift their people out of poverty. Maybe the price of bitcoin is being lowered by the US government to prevent north korea from using bitcoin to buy nukes

in other words they are saying North Korea is making between 1428.6BTC and 19,047.6BTC or equivalant of that in altcoins they "create" and dumps that to get the money.
that raises a lot of questions!

first of all where do they dump these coins to get the money? so why even bother to do it since they still have to go back to good ol' USD?

second where is this hidden HUGE hashrate that generates them this much money (by create i am assuming they mean mine these coins)?

they dump them right here in ANN discussions lol

Nothing is good because their views are one-sided and more serious than political issues. Things are slipping and bitcoin is the opportunity to blame everything for the purpose of threatening.

Sigh and the worst part about it all is that I am not even shocked that they would cite Bitcoin as the reason for North Korea problems. Watch the next thing they will say is the cause it the US dollar...unfreakingbelievable Cheesy

What next?  Bitcoin causes Cancer/Aids  Shocked :

... oh well, I guess it's just proof that they are resorting to desperate measures, they must really be worried Smiley

They're already claiming that bitcoin causes climate change, despite using much less energy than the banking system.

They are becoming truly desperate it seems.

Doesn't North Korea use USD for all of their actions? They make high quality counterfeit bills if I remember correctly. It seems that has been pushed under the rug.

And let's not talk about the weapon industry and usd either, things like that don't matter at all  Roll Eyes
Reddit had a huge thread on /environment about how bitcoin was going to cause the end of the world while doing nothing and contributing nothing. They use old articles and wattage/terahash to support them and ignore new efficient miners.

these reddit environmentalists don't like to remember the damage recycling program caused since its start by multiplying the load on transportation sector. we stopped burning trash, but started to burn way more gas to move all that clear dirt. this also causing more forest fire around the world. and now ashes from these forest fires melting earth's poles. and miners are to blame)

So tell me, what the is the problem of the US government now that this news reached them? Any problem with the fact that North Korea is able to find ways to survive notwithstanding its vehement opposition of the US government? That is the problem here. The US always thinks that it can just paralyze any country, for that matter, if the latter does not yield to the US force. The US always makes the impression that when a country is against them, the latter cannot survive. Well, they are in the wrong especially now that the North Korean government is able to sustain through the use of cryptos. Surely the US government will go against cryptos because they will use it as a loophole in establishing its power across nations. The US government likes playing the victim to get sympathy then come back with a supposed right to fight back.

It's not only in the case of North Korea, they are waiting for a reason to blame bitcoin. No one realises that the future and flow of bitcoin depends on bitcoiners decision. How fast they admit this fact that's the real time that the cryptomarket get more even strong.

Americans are fund of playing out the big and innocent brotherhood. I see some of the restrictions are just selfish drives that would only work hardship on the next country who such would be transferred to.

So what if North Korea is using cryptocurrency to fund their nuclear missile program? What is the American government going to do about it?
How could they even think of enrolling further sanctions preventing the trade of crypto by North Korea?

Any sort of sanctions can be circumvented in one way or another.
