Try to run bitcoinXT instead. Wait till the blockchain is downloaded, close bitcoinXT and than run the official bitcoin core. This helped me.

Its hard to say honestly. The database can corrupt for a variety of reasons. If the system is otherwise unstable a memory test[1] or disk test might show hardware problems. Most commonly people just let the client rescan the blockchain, esp. if it happens rarely. It will do so automatically on startup anyway as it cant work with the corrupted database. This will not endager your coins in any way. It also happens locally and is thus not limited by your connection speed, but only by the speed of the disk and the CPU (and other less important factors). On an older 2009 tripple core AMD with a mechanical disk a full rescan took me ~18-24 hours after a black out. On a modern i5 system with SSD it took less time to completely download and verify the blockchain.

From the logs it looks like your system managed to download and verify ~4 months worth of blockchain data from 2014 over night. I suspect its either a little older or your network connection is slow. There is little you can do about that. The initial sync will take time (as in days on older system), but it has to be done only once, well unless you have other problems that result in constant corruption of the database.

i have a 'issue' opening my bitcoin wallet. I downloaded it yesterday, let it sync for a long time. Today i tried to open it, and it seems stuck at Activating best chain... (for a few hours now) whats the best thing to do?
