I actually hate it when people say that X company, politician, person accepts bitcoin. They probably neither support or even care what bitcoin is , they just want to receive $ instead of bitcoin and that's why they use bitpay or coinbase to dump the bitcoins ASAP.

That's what I said. Even if it's an instant dump, it's a still a tiny vote of legitimacy that wasn't there before.

I don't see bitcoin useful as a voting mechanism, it's more of a financial one. Also to note that probably no government would allow voting throw blockchain, it would be too transparent Smiley

This. Imagine parties getting voted in by actually winning the vote, crazy.

I don't actually see any possible mainstream application of bitcoin in the fields that you mention, can you explain?
I don't think politicians are going to use bitcoin risking their reputation and campaings, I think bitcoin acceptance has to come from the low population

There are no shortage of politicians now accepting BTC donations and a few bills have been proposed to allow for payment for taxes in certain states. That is purely using it a vehicle to transit dollars, but it's still something which would've been hard to believe a short while back.

Actually implementing it in the machinations of government is a humongous leap and probably goes against every thing they want, but it might sneak in in a few enlightened places.

Leave no FUD unchallenged
Bitcoin has enough of a profile that we could stage an alternative Bitcoin election Vote. If anything if the story got covered it would at least plant the seed of the idea of a decentralised vote with the blockchain.

Sounds like an interesting idea, but don't just limit it to elections in the US (as this thread seemed to start in a slightly America-centric direction).  If anything, where things are headed in the direction of BRICS and some nations starting to trade in things other than dollars, it's going to be the elections in other countries that become increasingly important to global finance.

"an actually brilliant president in power, with a congress that is accountable"... Am I misclicked something and got into the fantasy childboard Smiley?

BTW Kora, and protoshares have this voting function.

Qora already have voting feature, and nxt will have voting feature in a few month, but apparently no body notice it. so I don't know how this feature would be the killer application of bitcoin. BTW, it's more complicate to realize voting feature in bitcoin.

Thats a bit of a stretch - you would have to force the majority to see the superior benefit of using the BTC itself to vote - so far it doesnt correct the issues of PAC and SIG who run congress through favors from politicians - how does holding bitcoin change that perspective?

only becomes the killer application if an entire sovereignty is created and the current masses emigrate their existing sovereignty to join this 'new' one.

In laymans terms - you can't beat the status quo until you become the new status qo.

Bitcoin has 2 major financial events in the next 6 years. the 2016 and 2020 election. With a handful of other global/ economic crises that will occur between then and now.

These could become very major events for Bitcoin to get an actually brilliant president in power, with a congress that is accountable..

Wait until voting becomes cool because we begin to witness more events like Eric Cantor getting booted. When we begin to see we can remove these people and in their place a better candidate with a better more transparent track record. We never did get Mitt Romneys Taxes did we.

If you ever want to hold office, expect your blockchain to be sifted through

Perhaps this is also 2 am pipedream as well as this idea first struck me the other night while out drinking.
