I do think we could see a very complex system formed using all of that computational power. Sort-of like the idea from a New Kind of Science where a lot of simple components and rules produce complex life-like behavior. Also as a side note, the Singularity Institute of Artificial Intelligence is accepting donations in Bitcoin 
The Bitcoin network builds the groundwork for the computer equivalent of a self-regulating cellular membrane with neuronal features, particularly behavior akin to an action potential. It's ability to autonomously self-regulate is probably the single most important aspect. This structure could possibly enable some radical capabilities beyond acting as a monetary or political system.
