There is a wiki category for marketing now, though it is sparse yet:
  http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Category:Marketing

There is an IRC channel specifically for marketing discussions:  #bitcoin-marketing on Freenode
  http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#bitcoin-marketing

Going forward this will be important. Right now I think the explanation part of Bitcoin is so bad that drawing more attention from the general public (who'll generally have a harder time crossing the pons asinorum) might actually be harmful. Let's put some more work in the wiki and in some videos first.

What do you all people think? Is bitcoin so genius that it will grow just from word of mouth, or do we need to do a bigger and better marketing effort?

If forumites contacted their local news media, and the media started to write about bitcoins, more people would learn about it.

I was also thinking about the possibility for having a "marketing division" inside the bitcoin community itself, perhaps someone educated and with experience in the field of marketing would have some ideas as how to brush up the bitcoin concept and make it even more popular. I see weusecoins.com already did a very good effort.

Unfortunately I don't have much time to contribute at this point, but I figure tossing around some ideas is better than nothing.
