Supercomputers do many things, BTC ASICs only mine BTC. I think there is a difference.

You right of course, but if top 500 supercomputers try hashing they will have only small share - that is the point

And this is outdated info, bitcoin network has grown a lot since May...

The bitcoin network hashrate estimate on bitcoinwatch.com passed 1 exaFLOPS (1,000 petaFLOPS) this week – over 8 times the combined speed of the top 500 supercomputers. […]
Complete and utter BS.  The Bitcoin network isn't doing a single FLOP.  It only does integer operations.  I don't know how or why bitcoinwatch.com cooks up his number, but it makes no sense whatsoever.

Comparison doesn't make much sense.

Most of bitcoin network power is in ASICs that can just compute hashes, nothing else.

Yes, and also 500 computers vs thousands or millions does not make sense Tongue

Circa 2010
It certainly is a testimony to the power of the Bitcoin network. Now the next thing is whether we'll ever be able to use this kind of hashing power for medical and scientific projects.

Very impressive!

That's what I call "Wiki Leverage Power" working in a real (and virtual) situation...

The bitcoin network hashrate estimate on bitcoinwatch.com passed 1 exaFLOPS (1,000 petaFLOPS) this week – over 8 times the combined speed of the top 500 supercomputers. […]

The fastest computer, Sequoia, would measure at about 1.6% of the bitcoin network. Their combined speed is 48 petaFLOPS, roughly equivalent to 5% of the bitcoin network. In fact, the top 500 supercomputers have a combined speed of 12% of the bitcoin network.
