If you want name recognition go with Bitcoin, if you want an alternative that has untapped potential to grow go with Litecoin.
there's room for both. you can get in on the ground level with litecoin mining, bitcoin is past that point.
Litecoin seems like it may outdo bitcoin, imho.
Personally I think that litecoin has more potential for growth still as not many retailers are accepting it yet, however if it doesn't make it over that hurdle there is a risk that it wont go anywhere.
Bitcoin I think is a more solid choice but we've already seen the big surge from when the mass media got hold of it.

bitcoin will probably keep rising in price after more retailers keep hearing about it
As long as you buy low and sell high, either is good.
