You're looking for the testnet!
Run bitcoind or bitcoin-qt with the -testnet=1 flag (or just add testnet=1 to your bitcoin.conf). That will get you on the testnet, which has its own separate blockchain, lower mining difficulty (don't mine unless you need coins to play with, there's faucets out there), and lower transaction volume.

Hi i was reading something about a service where you can test your bitcoin payment processing, without actually using bitcoin. It worked in the same manner as bitcoin, but is not bitcoin.
