You can take a dump on it, nuke it, ruin the atmosphere, poison the water, the earth will be fine. It keeps on rolling, 5k years of abuse is nothing.

The problem is, we live here and we dont have a second home. So if we want to live here longterm, we need to change immediately.

But in reality, Bitcoin computing power is a phantom menace to our planet. Yes, it uses electricity, but the efficiency it brings will more than compensate for this expenditure. Bitcoin has the power to eliminate the ATM, banks, payment processors, etc etc etc

I was tired of seeing people saying how earth destroying Bitcoin is, how it sucks up so much energy, so I wrote this piece up.

It's not perfect, there are a few data metrics that I'd like to change (average watts:gigahash ratio of ASICs based on hashrate delivered), but I think it's a good summary and comparison to other computing giants (Google, Facebook, Ebay...) I'm also trying to find data on Visa or Mastercard power consumption. Power consumption of a bank would be great too.

After going through the power consumption, I begin speculations on the future difficulty and power requirements to keep the network going.

Check it out, comment, what should I change?
