Thanks for sharing that, I didn't know it was possible. What would happen if there were a separate chain out there which was somehow tampered with to give someone the wrong money. How would the QT client react?

Electrum also has deterministic wallet, if that is what you were looking for in Armory.

You hadn't said anything in your original post about wanting to use Armory.

Then yes, you'll have to suffer through the synchronization process.

I just said fuckit and pulled the plug, going with MultiBit, for more painless. I'm a very low volume user for the moment so I'm not too worried about it. Armory will be for the future when I have significant quantities of BTC. Wink

Some routers will let you specify bandwidth caps for a computer, you might look into that and let it run. Also, you can sometimes do the same thing at the client level.

Honestly though just let it run once and be done with it, then keep it synched.

Took me an hour to synch a new client, everyone's mileage varies of course.

The qt isn't the only wallet out there. I suggest web wallets for new people who only a have a mbit or two.

The blockchain is 11,7 GB atm (13,2 with rev files). You can check at %appdata%/bitcoin/blocks
If you have little bandwidth you should take a look at SPV clients like MultiBit which is also linked here http://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet
