Quick question for those more familiar: I know that more and more merchants are accepting bitcoin but is there anyone out there who is working on or has established a bitcoin marketplace yet?

There used to be one. Bitmit.

But they closed down a few months ago.

A centralized marketplace would probably attract scammers and give Bitcoin a bad name.

In theory, yes, that could easily happen.  But the ever-present issue of scammers in bitcoin also presents an opportunity for an entrepreneur to develop a site with built in escrow to eliminate the possibility of scammers.  Right now, the whole no chargebacks thing that is an inherent feature in Bitcoin only benefits the sellers.  If a site had a strong enough reputation (like Amazon does) and did this with all the transactions, it would eliminate the possibility of scamming.  I know I'd shop at a site that did this.

I sold one item here and have bought a couple also.

https://cryptothrift.com/

Crypto-thrift is a relatively new site and it does not have the reputation and variety which Bitmit possessed. Anyway... they are still growing at a good pace. I am hopeful about the future.  Grin

well indeed there is nothing big yet - but this is just a matter of time, hard part while doing such a thing is to make people trust your service... There are few already but almost nothing to buy over there ...

Bitcoin's amazon/ebay etc. where merchants can migrate to dealing exclusively in bitcoin?

The more products and services we can - as a network and community - provide solely using bitcoin as the currency the faster adoption can happen.

I've been coming to understand the whole bitcoin concept in recent days but can't help but equate this to Second Life's Lindens in world economy and how huge it's grown in just a few years of launching that in world economy. I can see bitcoin like "first life" lindens Cheesy (I know but it helped me get the point anyway), and figure if there is (or is about to be) a dedicated marketplace for bitcoin only that can only be a good thing.
