On topic though, I would have never even bothered to reply to someone who sent me an email like this. It screams scam right from the start, theymos wouldn't have time to send out emails offering ad-spots, would just be a big waste of his time when he can manage everything through the forum.

I kid you not!  but, I won't reveal that here anyways.  not necessary.

Now I'm intrigued, care to share what you wanted the add for? I can't imagine them turning down anything, even if they are scammers.

I played along, but after they saw which business I wanted the add for, they told me they weren't interested in selling me an add

If you do receive an email you should request that any correspondence be PGP signed. This is really the only way to know for sure if it is who the email claims to be from.

Not really, I believe theymos uses PMs instead of emails for the forum ad auction, and email sender could be spoofed.

that should be fake. there are users who even register suspicious usernames like "theyrnos" which its purspoe is to probably also sell ad space.

if the email comes from *@bitcointalk.org, then it could be legit.

Anyone claiming to be theymos or a staff member you should always ask for them to sign their bitcoin address which is known to the public.

As far I know, the forum doesn't even send these emails. All communication is done through theymos directly. If anything looks suspicious, just ask to receive a PM from theymos on bitcointalk to be sure.

No no no it's fake. Forum does not communicate in this way. Use theymos' auctions for ads.

We received the following message and have had the following conversation from the email address [email protected] and as always we are very cautious.  The sender is purported to be from bitcoin talk and selling ad space for a reasonable price in a prominent spot. 

We were unsure where to post it, but wanted to confirm the veracity of the conversation as we are very suspect.  We also want others to know that if this is fraudulent to ignore it as well as put the bitcoin talk community and staff on alert if necessary.
