You're really asking this question at the wrong place, you should be asking the bitstamp support this, not us.  We can only speculate what would happen in this circumstance.  That said, the question has a lot of unstated points.  We don't know how much is stolen in this instance - obviously, we can't since it's a theft that hasn't happened yet, and hopefully won't.  The question to ask bitstamp is this: do you have insurance in case of theft?  I mean, small thefts they can probably cover without it, but if the theft is large enough, they would likely need some sort of insurance company to cover their losses.

Great points I must say. Lets say +10,000 usd hypothetically. And I will submit a support ticket to get a definite answer to this situation and I'll update asap.

Hypothetically say you had money in Bitstamp and you day traded frequently but you always never left bitcoin for prolonged amount of time in the exchange. So one day (hypothetically) someone robs the exchange and your funds are still in it but are in USD. Will you still be able to get your money back? I just figured they're not actually stealing tangible usd but they could steal btc from you wallet.
