Your best bet, would be to start out with small transactions, until you feel comfortable that you are not getting scammed. If you go the exchange way as was suggested, make sure you are using a throw away account at another bank. You do not want to risk losing your primary account.

Bitquik.In is also another alternative for buying and selling bitcoins.
Or localbitcoins but either way make sure to do your research as those are both non reversible if you get scammed.
I highly suggest setting up with a real exchange and using a checking account (can open a new one just or BTC). And you will be able to buy more btc from a normal exchange.
