Ok. After a little more investigation I found out that it costs $185,000 to apply for a Top Level Domain at ICANN. And that's just the application fee.

So I guess it would require a collective initiative from a lot of people/business in the .coin community to make this happen.

I very much doubt we'll be seeing a official .bitcoin, .coin or .bit any time soon. There are of course unofficial .bit extensions. A lot of people have tried this in the past but there wasn't much interest.

Should be .coin so that it includes all the alt currencies!

When I looked at a list with hundreds of new Top Level Domains that are going to be available in the next months (https://www.namecheap.com/domains/extensions-tlds/new-tlds/checklist.aspx), I was surprised not to see a .bitcoin Top Level Domain!

So I assume there's not going to be a .bitcoin Top Level Domain anytime soon.

Does anyone know if my assumption is right? And if so, what should we - the Bitcoin community - do about this?
