Try GreenAddress too as well. You can send and receive Bitcoins there without much hustle.

The best feature why I like it for:
"Send money to a friend on Facebook, a follower on Twitter or to a colleague's email or mobile number."

The initial sync with Bitcoin Core can take days. If you download the bootstrap.dat torrent that saves many hours though.

Consider to use lightweight wallet like Electrum or Multibit. It`s much quicker to sync them and you can have your wallet ready within short time.
I am using Multibit and I am happy with them.

This is a really good piece of advice.  Especially for hot wallets.  You can use it with no downloading of the chain.  Allows you to open up wallet and send quickly.

If you are doing cold storage these still would work as well.

i leave it running 24/7 normally but it was closed for some reason

opened it today and the fucking chain is corrupted again
5 years and 26 weeks to be re-indexed (not downloaded ) but still
 a pain in the ballz

this needs fixing ASAP ,the older version was bulletproof and the new seems to be incapable of running longer than 3 days without crashing

Thx Everyone for replies.
It seems i am doing it correct way lets see how it performs then i can switch to other if required
New wallet is the best and once will be synchronized 100 % then you will begin to love it. Some feed back will really be very helpful to see how things are going now.

I think there is something wrong, Now my bitcoin core is showing 137020 processed block with "3 years 33" week behind. With message that reindexing blocks on disk. In the morning it was showing only "32 week behind". How is it possible? what is resetting the counter?

Update: I am using Bitcoin Core version v0.10.0 (32-bit)

Latest version is syncing very fast but if you download blocks from torrent it will sync faster. You can find the latest torrent in this thread: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/ann-bitcoin-blockchain-data-torrent-145386

If you download blocks from torrent will all of your previous transactions be recognized?

Yes, you need to run Bitcoin core with -reindex command once though, so old transactions adds up to  your wallet. It might be different command, I used it long ago and dont have Bitcoin core, but open the console and type help to look what starting command doing this trick. It is the same as when you import private key, your wallet needs to be updated with old transactions with this command

If you have transactions before you will see them in blocks. Blocks and wallets are different files. Every transaction is registered under blocks. It doesn't matter where you download blocks, you only need to synchronize your wallet. When it's up-to-date you can see all your previous transactions.

Hi
I am new to bitcoins, So wanted little help here.I have downloded the wallet but struckup to start it up since 5 days. Following information i get from the client.

1- Its Struck at message " Reindexing blocks on disk" +  " 1 year and 27 week behind"

2- When i see how much blocks have been loaded in blocks folder  then there are 189 files of size of 26.7 GB. Last block is  rev00189.dat.

3- At present, 255903 blocks have been processed for transaction history.

My question, is it going fine , if yes then how long it will take to completely downlaod and reindex blocks

another day or two and you will have it up to date (35.3 GB )
after that ,you will not notice it running in the background

You are using bitcoin core wallet, i just hope its the latest version since they claim syncing is faster in the last one.
Everything is ok, and its supposed to be slow, because client is downloading entire blockchain to your hard drive, and the slower your outband connection is, the slower the process obviously.

Sometimes it happens to me that blocks stop downloading, so i just restart client, and that helps, but make sure to check is it working first.
Hover with mouse over right lower corner to see what block was downloaded last, and so it few times to see is it moving, or just check on your connection are you downloading data.

cheers

it's better to download electrum (a lightweight client) and use it doesn't requires any blockchain download or even  more simpler wallet blockchain.info (online wallet).
if you have any bitcoins in your core wallet dump your private keys and import them into your alternative wallet( whichever you choose).
instruction on how to import private keys.
