Very interesting, although considering the special properties of bitcoin that make it very atm-unfriendly (having to wait for confirmations) I think maybe it would be appropriate to think 'outside the atm-box' for a solution. Waiting 10 minutes minimum around an ATM doesn't sound like it's going to exactly catch on.

That won't be necessary.  The ATM machine knows immediately that it has cash.  As long as the connection between the machine and the blockchain is secure, the user goes away knowing the transaction will go through, and the ATM owner needn't worry because he possesses the local currency.  Any waiting period is irrelevant.

I would assume that crazy_rabbit it talking about when you put bitcoins in and take cash out.

Will the machine distribute cash immediately without any confirmations?  If not then you'd need to stand guard at the ATM until your transaction got confirmed.

P.S. Can someone stick this video on youtube?

Which is why I added that caveat.  It's a vulnerability, sure, but that's up to the ATM companies to sell us on their security.

Ok here is the ~ 152 MB flv video:
http://www.wikitransfer.ch/2Yv/BitcoinAtm_demo_by_Justin_Oh.flv

Some screenshots to see the quality:

It downloads in free mode at about ~ 500 kB/s (does anyone offer faster free speed?)

If I get my hands on the larger video (~ 2GB) I will try to re-encode it to make it smaller - if it does make any sense and upload it as well.

P.S. I assume this is promo video so sharing it won't make anyone angry.

He did mention a custom app is coming. I guess one could send BTC to the address shown by the app anytime, and then you just go to the ATM and withdraw cash using some code that the app has for your transaction. Viola, no waiting required!

The whole point of this machine is to put in dirty fiat money. And that is a hell of a business.

I'm 36 and I'm definitely not in contact with financial people but as far as public coverage and masses knowing about bitcoin I can surely say it's one big zero.

We all get giddy when we hear about media talking about bitcoin but there's no such thing here - eventually some generic translated article from international news agency and that's it. Lack of any kind of discussions on forums is the biggest sign of really, really bad bitcoin coverage here.

Would love to bring this to my area but unfortunately there's zero interest and coverage about bitcoins here. You can't find word about it even on the biggest forums.

 Huh What area is that?

Bosnia

That will change, and fast. The eastern european countries (including former yugoslavia) are some of the most intereted in bitcoin anywhere.

Hopefully, can't see it so far. There's nothing about bitcoin on local forums, few translated news without even using Bitcoin in title, they used generic "online currency", so far complete blackout in Bosnia at least.

How old are you if I may ask? I am quite sure business people are aware of it as are Bosnian finance people, so depending on your age you may or may not be in contact with them, or in contact with them when they might be discussion new ideas that they only recently learned about.

Also, I did write to them about licensing and they did respond. *shrugs*

Well, would you be so kind as to give us the information?
What is on the website is minimal, at best.

Well, you have to understand that they don't have enough staff to deal with everyone who claims to want to buy/license an ATM. When I wrote to them, I said I was an entrepreneur (I included the name of a recent company I started) and had an interest in seeing the future success of bitcoin. If you write to them with a one liner "Hey, I'd like to buy a BitcoinATM", they probably won't reply until they are a larger company. *shrugs*

More generally, this is always a hard part of starting a company. You have an exciting idea and you generate some press (as BitcoinATM did) and you start getting thousands of e-mails a day, even though you only have a staff of two or three people. It's impossible to reply to everyone.

I have written them so many times about licensing and they never responded, not once. That said, I will not be impressed at a machine that "takes bitcoin" and "dispenses cash". That's not particularly amazing. What will be amazing is making a machine that you can park somewhere and it wont get totally pawned by hackers. Building ATMS seems like something ATM building companies should be left to do. If it's real, I'm interested but I'd be concerned about security.

It does both. It takes bitcoins or cash and dispenses cash or bitcoins. Why is that not impressive? It's so much more convenient than, for example, BitInstant (if there is an ATM near you).

Also, I did write to them about licensing and they did respond. *shrugs*

Really? That's so strange- I don't get why they wont respond to me.

The functionality itself isn't impressive because people figured out how to do it for bitcoin a couple years ago already here on the forums. We always knew it wasn't very difficult to do technically. Being able to do it securely and safely millions of times will be the kicker.

On March 25, 2013, Canadian media and technology entrepreneur, Jeff Berwick, announced the completion of the world’s first BitcoinATM machine and announced it would soon take it to market.

Today, just over one month later, BitcoinATM is announcing its grand inauguration and launch press conference and reception.  BitcoinATM will be unveiling its G6000 BitcoinATM at the Hotel Del Coronado in the Yorke Room in San Diego, CA on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 1pm.
The machine will be displayed and presented as fully functional for both cash in and cash out capabilities with a real time presentation showing the funds flowing into or out of bitcoin wallets.

The company garnered much media attention over the past month with its plans to bring Bitcoin to mainstreet with its ATM, which, unlike traditional ATM’s, features cash-in and cash-out capabilities for users looking to either buy bitcoins or sell bitcoins.
Cementing itself among the forefront of Bitcoin startups, BitcoinATM maintains its plan to place an ATM in Cyprus, as well as throughout the Americas and the world.

Since announcing its technology, the company has received franchisee inquiries from 300  groups in over 30 countries spanning every continent on the globe except Antarctica.  BitcoinATM is also in the process of closing a first round of fundraising expected to be in the $1-3 million range to handle growth and demand.

There is a limited number of space available for the afternoon gathering and a large amount of interest, so BitcoinATM asks all media and interested parties to send the company an e-mail to RSVP to [email protected].
For more information on BitcoinATM you can go to www.bitcoinatm.com.

Apart from this forum, I've not seen this anywhere else. Can't see why someone would fake it though?

Its on the bitcoinatm.com website now!  I cant even imagine just how much tthis could affect the price, but I'm feeling bullish!

I heard that today is the opening debut of Jeff Berwick's BitcoinATM. Will it happen? If it does, what will happen to the price... speculate!

Where did you hear that today was the day?  You'd think the website would have a countdown to launch!

I know right? Well in several of the interviews Jeff Berwick said there would be a debut in San Diego "next week". Also, my memory (perhaps faulty!) is telling me that he said "Friday next week" in one of the interviews. I'm in suspense! For some reason I think a live demonstration of a working commercial-grade ATM would be huge for bitcoin (I realize a small prototype was demonstrated already).

On DollarVigilante the last video is from 18th April.  There he says San Diego is likely to pip Cyrpus to the punch due to "logistics", and puts a time frame of "the enxt 2 weeks"...so it could well be next week.   As long as the ATM functions well and is well publicised (I'm guessing it will be heavily covered in the media) then I think this could send us to a new all time high.  Followed by a significant correction, rather than a comeplete crash.

It's great idea. Thread like this is worth more than 100 "it's going up/down because I say so" threads.

I'm not sure what the comments here are about. The BitcoinATM seems like a really exciting project that required a lot of work. Anyway, looking forward to the public opening.

A lot of people "involved" with Bitcoin seem to be more focused on getting people to look at their face, than actually getting shit done.
